View Quote Where are you getting "millions in reserve"? Their entire military is less than a million, and that includes lots of men that aren't really deployable - Navy, most air force, strategic rocket forces just to start. Then they have maintain bases and at least a minimal "boots on the ground" presence along the worlds longest border, and don't forget they need to keep a few reliable guys in reserve to back up the riot police. The days of a huge force of even minimally trained reservists, even assuming they'd show up, are long over. They have essentially none. |

Story of Col. Francis R. Stevens Jr. (retired) who met and became friends with Lieutenant Saburo Sakai (deceased 2000), the WW2 Japanese air ace who shot down and killed his father in the spring of 1942 in New Guinea. I remember reading this story (written by Col. Stevens Jr.) 20 plus years ago and it has always stuck out in my memory. Four pages but the last two are extremely powerful imho per war and forgiveness fwiw.

The Federal Reserve on Wednesday approved its first interest rate increase in more than three years, an incremental salvo to address spiraling inflation without torpedoing economic growth. After keeping its benchmark interest rate anchored near zero since the beginning of the Covid pandemic, the policymaking Federal Open Market Committee said it will raise rates by a quarter percentage point, or 25 basis points. That will bring the rate now into a range of 0.25%-0.5%. The move will correspond with a hike in the prime rate and immediately send financing costs higher for many forms of consumer borrowing and credit. Along with the rate hikes, the committee also penciled in rate hikes at each of the six remaining meetings this year, pointing to a consensus funds rate of 1.9% by year's end. The committee sees three more hikes in 2023 then none the following year. The rate hike was approved with only one dissent. St. Louis Fed President James Bullard wanted a 50-basis-point increase. The committee last raised rates in December 2018, then had to backtrack the following July and begin cutting. I mentioned a few pages back that the Russian economy is doomed; it just can't see the effects yet. Similar to that Titanic-hits-iceberg scenario, the same thing is shaping up for the rest of the world in regards to wheat. I specifically looked for articles PRIOR to the onset of hostilities because things were already looking grim then:
https://foreignpolicy.com/2022/01/22/russia-ukraine-war-grain-exports-africa-asia/ SNIP These scenarios should not be taken lightly. It has barely been a decade since the uprisings of the Arab Spring, for which rising food prices were the spark that lit the fuse of revolution in Tunisia and Egypt. More recently, one only needs to look at Kazakhstan to see how quickly a rising price for a staplein this case, fuelcan lead to protests, violence, and, in Kazakhstan's case, a Russian military intervention. A population's grievances might be much broader and have accumulated over many years, but it's often a price shock that sets off conflict. Hunger can increase tensions-producing inequality and simultaneously radicalize mass political movements. View Quote Interesting infographic from Al-Jazeera: Now throw in a poor harvest: https://www.spglobal.com/commodity-insights/en/market-insights/latest-news/agriculture/020122-russias-2021-22-wheat-exports-fall-21-on-year-prices-decline Russia's wheat output is expected to fall in MY 2021-22, due to adverse weather conditions, particularly dry and warm summers. Platts Analytics has projected Russia's wheat crop at 77.6 million mt in MY 2021-22. Export prices of Russian wheat fell $11 over the past month, as the government's repeated interventions and escalating tension with Ukraine weighed on the prices. Russia introduced new export tax mechanisms last month, setting an export quota on wheat at 8 million mt over Feb. 15-June 30. View Quote Again: These news are from BEFORE war broke out. |

This should have happened over a week ago. While obviously this will help Ukraine, it should also be a pretty good indicator of where Putin really stands. This would be a mild escalation by the US/NATO in their defense of Ukraine. Does Putin lose his shit over this and go full Grozny in response? Does this bring a more rational Putin to the bargaining table? Time will tell, but someone was finally willing to play a fucking card. Why are announcing this to the world? Russia will use this as an excuse. They will say this is proof the US is trying to destroy russia. Covert vs public is an interesting dilemma. Everything listed has mostly already been moved in publicly, including Turkish drones. This is just another influx by the looks of things depending on what SAM systems are brought in and what type of drones. Just as important as getting them weapons to win, is getting a better understanding of the mindset of Putin. This slight escalation by the US will help see where he really is at. |

The NATO MiGs are western electronics, glass cockpits, nato comms and systems. It would take a month of training to learn to fly it. BUT. Learning to fly it effectively under duress in combat would take many more months. Basically like going from a MiG to an older F-16. He also did not think the MiG 29 has the type of weapons that would be useful in the current conflict. Plus it would need to stay low away from Russian AD radars and it is a huge gas hog with horrible range at low levels. And it is shitty at ground attack. It can dog fight, but the Russians are not flying a lot of fighters over Ukraine as both sides are hitting everything with AD. |
