Yours is a very specific and very hard to obtain fetish. At least for the common man; otherwise this is the average Tuesday for the oligarch crowd. This will require the complete collapse of all the major schools of "foreign policy" and "foreign language", as OoB originally predicted. Think of Ocean's 11: we would benefit from a little help from @BlackFox, although that's not absolutely required, but otherwise all it requires is an air ticket to Dubai and a few days of walking and talking in the various mega-malls, plus an active IG or TikTok account, to see who is really pining for the mother land. It's not a war crime, it's guerilla warfare. |

The only reason Germany is even thinking of cutting off their own gas is that Putin has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is a Hitler-level maniac. Before the war they were finding ways to avoid pressuring Russia. Now Nord 2 is dead. It will never happen under Putin. Russia’s actions have been so egregious that I believe there is a 60/40 chance that Germany tells Putin to fuck off. This would have been unthinkable a month ago. On the Russian side Putin is trying to use his energy sector as a club the same way he’s trying to use his nukes as a club. Nukes have always been meant to be that kind of club - “a threat in being” - something which is a threat just by existing which never has to be used or exposed to risk. Not so with a massive sector of your economy that by definition has to be exposed to market or political risk. Europe had been willing to leave his energy sector untouched if only because it benefitted them. But Putin has even fucked that up for Russia. So what will happen when - not if, but when the gas stops? Russia has enough storage for 4-6 months of production at most. Once their storage is full, they have to stop pumping. When they stop pumping many wells will freeze and suffer permanent damage. This will require years of repair/redrilling and money/expertise the Russians depended on the west for. Without western expertise and western capital investment, it can’t be repaired, ever. Half of the Russian economy will evaporate never to return and the other half is being crushed by sanctions. Why WOULDN’T nations go to war over this? At this point it’s not a question of if, but of when. Soon if the Germans tell Putin to get bent, a year from now if the Germans swallow their pride long enough to make emergency arrangements. The only thing that will stop it is someone in Russia doing what has to be done to save their nation. |
