On the low side we're talking about a 5% discrepancy between those numbers... pretty much irrelevant.

I'm talking about the unnamed sources vs the DOD info.

Wolverines! ...a news outlet picked up the story.

Life imitates art. For recent proof of this centuries-old maxim, look no further than this photo of an abandoned Russian infantry fighting vehicle in Ukraine with the word  "Wolverines" scrawled on the side in white spray paint in an apparent homage to the 1984 Cold War-era action flick "Red Dawn."

The photo was shared to Twitter on Thursday in response to a tweet by NPR's White House correspondent, Scott Detrow, who wrote that "We were driving too fast to get a clear picture  but we just drove past a destroyed Russian tank with WOLVERINES spraypainted across it." Fortunately, Oleg Tolmachev, the head of production for Ukrainian oil and gas company Naftogaz, had seen the exact same thing and snapped a photo of it.

The vehicle appears to be a Russian BMP-2, an infantry fighting vehicle that fulfills a similar role to the U.S. Army's Bradley Fighting Vehicles. The BMP-2's awkward forward tilt suggests that it suffered damage prior to its eventual abandonment and newfound transformation into a monument to 1980s pop culture in an active warzone.

So yes, remarkably, somewhere in Ukraine, a piece of Russian armor is now a meme for a movie about a bunch of high school students in Colorado who fend off a Russian invasion thanks to some good ole' fashioned American grit, ingenuity, a fuckton of 7.62mm ammo, rocket-propelled grenades, and a surprisingly solid grasp of insurgent warfare.

Directed by John Milius, "Red Dawn" stars Patrick Swayze, Thomas Howell, Charlie Sheen, Lea Thompson, and Jennifer Grey, among others, as Colorado teens whose small-town lives are upended by a Soviet invasion of the United States. After establishing military control of the town of Calumet, the Soviet invaders find themselves occupiers. In response, a resistance forms.  Made up mostly of teenagers and young adults, they don the mantle of "Wolverines" after the town's high school mascot and set about sowing chaos and confusion among the Soviet force's ranks.

As anyone with access to a history book can tell you  and as Russian forces might discover if they attempt to establish a permanent presence in Ukraine  occupations breed insurgencies, and insurgencies are nearly impossible to defeat with conventional military means. Every citizen is a potential combatant, and fighters blend seamlessly into the populace. They have an inherent home-field advantage, not just through a deep personal knowledge of the terrain, but of the people and culture. As such, they also tend to enjoy considerable local support.

To the people who think we may be getting played.  These are the words directly from the mouths of the Russian government.

Russia’s Ukraine Propaganda Has Turned Fully Genocidal

Egged on by the language of annihilation and extermination, Russian soldiers have become willing executioners.

“On Feb. 26, only two days into the war, Russian state news agency RIA Novosti published an op-ed titled “The Coming of Russia and of the New World.” Its author, without a trace of irony, praises Russian President Vladimir Putin for the timely “solution of the Ukrainian question.” A few hours later, the article was removed and is now only available in web archives. It’s unclear why it was removed—whether because of its uncomfortable proximity to the lexicon of systematic mass murder or because it described a plan for dismantling Ukrainian statehood after a successful invasion presented itself as an accomplished fact when, in reality, Russian forces were being routed.”

He's doing exactly what he needs to be doing. He's the political figurehead, the head of state, the cheerleader in chief, the motivator, the voice. He can't lead troops, he can't run a factory. What Ukraine needs is a visible focus of attention and someone to rally popular support.

Aside from the successful intercept of the Russian attack at the airport in the opening hour of the attack, the key moment was Zelensky saying "I need bullets, not a ride." Bingo. Ukraine is still free (most of it) because of the initial Ukrainian military success AND Zelensky's high public profile. And hosting foreign leaders inside Kiev is a huge PR win. Not only did Russia fail to take Kiev, it's safe enough for foreign leaders to fly in and show their support. HUGE win. I love seeing Zelensky addressing just about every foreign legislative body, every international body, every head of state. He's just an actor, but pressing the flesh, carrying the message, and flying the colors is one of the biggest thing Ukraine needs. My hat's off to the Zelensky.

Good find.

The language is interesting, recently people were losing their minds over a Ukrainian talking about a "new world order" (clearly discussing peace, not NWO conspiracies) and here we have Russians using similar language, but discussing a new Russian centric world.

How the political landscape has changed.

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev announced that the five principles they presented for the normalization of interstate relations between the two countries were accepted by Armenia.

In the statement, it was stated that Aliyev told Putin that "Armenia accepts these principles".
Azerbaijan's normalization proposals

Azerbaijan presented the following proposals to Armenia for the normalization of relations:
  • Mutual recognition by states of each other's sovereignty, territorial integrity, inviolability of international borders and political independence.
  • Mutual confirmation that States have no territorial claims against each other and that they have a legal obligation not to make such claims in the future.
  • To refrain from threatening each other's security, threats to political independence and territorial integrity, and the use of force and other situations incompatible with the purposes of the UN Charter.
  • Setting borders and establishing diplomatic relations.
  • Opening transportation and communication lines, establishment of other relevant communication networks and cooperation in the fields of interest.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said, "There is nothing unacceptable in Azerbaijan's offers." had made a statement.

Not going to bother linking or quoting the source article in Newsweek. It's utter rubbish. Why do these news organizations not push questions that matter? If I was doing this interview with the Russian ambassador, I'd be trying to push him on how he can lie so much. Every single thing the clown says can be refuted, often with Russian sources. Key question: if the Russian government persistently and consistently lies about everything its doing, how can there ever by any kind of treaty or agreement with the Russian government as a party? If Russia lies all the time, isn't the only possible conclusion the abolition of the Russian government? Bah.

Russia didn't invade. If they did, they've done it with great efficiency and without injuring any civilians. Zelenskyy is Satan because Ukraine, as a country, laundered money for the Clintons and the Biden's, so those women and children killed and raped deserve it: the women because they actually laundered the money (they have washing machines) and the children because they volunteered to go to Epstein's island

He looks sooooooo "happy"

Russia has appointed Gen. Alexander Dvornikov, who commands Russia's southern military district and "has a lot of experience" from "Russian operations in Syria," to oversee the war in Ukraine, a Western official said Friday, according to BBC.

The Russian intervention in Syria was notoriously brutal, and foreign policy analyst Rula Jebreal said Dvornikov's appointment likely signals an "expansion" of Russia's "terror campaign" against Ukraine.
This reorganization comes after Russia's military withdrew from the Kyiv region, having failed to take the capital. Observers expect these Russian units to be redeployed to eastern Ukraine.

Prior to Dvornikov's appointment, Western officials reportedly believed there was no single battlefield commander overseeing the Russian invasion. The New York Times reported late last month on the intelligence community's consensus that "the men making decisions are far from the fight, back in Moscow: Defense Minister Sergei K. Shoigu; Gen. Valery Gerasimov, the chief of the general staff of the Russian military; and even President Vladimir V. Putin."

Several Russian generals have been killed on the front lines as they attempted to untangle tactical and logistical problems that arose due to the lack of proper coordination.

Yes.  All the above but each item has a different value in the range.  The qualifier is "available combat power before the invasion" and "that they had arrayed against Ukraine".

Link to the transcript of the DOD briefing.  https://www.defense.gov/News/Transcripts/Transcript/Article/2994883/senior-defense-official-holds-a-background-briefing/

But, of the assessed available combat power that they had available to them before the invasion, that they had arrayed against Ukraine for this purpose, of the total assessed combat power that they had, we estimate that they are between 80 and 85 percent of what they had.

And it depends on, you know, that goes up or down depending on what individual factor you're looking at. Tanks, fighter aircraft, missile inventory, troops, I mean, but the aggregate tells us that they are under 85 percent of their assessed available combat power when they started this invasion.

If they are dug in and have good supply lines they will be a lot tougher than the forces that tried to move on Kyiv with limited supplies.

If you don't think that this can happen (AGAIN), read the book "Ordinary Men"

It can happen and it will happen.  Again.

Posting this again. It's an analysis of the original Ria Novosti article that should be required reading for everyone.

At some point, the Russians have fielded reserves. I wonder how many BTGs are effectively deployed in Ukraine vs. their initial 110-120. You'd think Donbas/Luhansk has the lions share.

It really is.  Something that outside of the US would be an obscure American movie, has had such a deep impact.  Incredible.
