"Kyiv will fall in 72 hours".  Holds out for months.

At this point, why not?

Let Milley continue his quest for the source of white rage. The military stuff doesn't seem to suit him.

Do you want a Franz Ferdinand incident, because that's how you get a Franz Ferdinand incident.

And given how they've played this so far you can't see Russia making such a huge mistake?

Oh, I don't know. I'm a peaceful man, but don't fuck with my family. The screams would have lasted a long time if he'd hurt my family. Even if I had to patch him up a bit to extend the retribution.

Is it right, no. But at that point I wouldn't care.

So you have a nation (Russia) that feels it must take the Ukraine back, but perish, as they need the power of Ukrainian resources.
The locals are 100% against it.

It sounds like ethnic cleansing; forcibly expel Ukrainians out, stick em somewhere like Siberia where they have no vote. They will live in poverty while Russians move in and take their land. Its nothing new. Its how they did the tartars over a couple hundred years in the Crimea.

Its a uniquely Russian solution to the problem that in the US we tend to solve with counterinsurgency.

It doesn't solve your aging population problem or your economic pariah problem or soon-to-be mass emigration problem.  But it gets you some natural resources.

And the fact you're using your 'Stans and underclass to provide the cannon fodder undermines the enterprise.

This is seems so "white trash ignorant with money" tacky to me.

The alleged mistress of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Svetlana Krivonogikh, is renting out a luxury four-story apartment in St. Petersburg  complete with its own moat, according to a media investigation published Thursday.

The BBC's Russian service unearthed the listing on the website of German luxury brokerage Engel & Vlkers. The ad priced the "Residence on Kamenny Island"  a 19th-century retreat for imperial royalty  at 700,000 rubles ($8,700) per month, minus 90,000 rubles ($1,130) for utilities.

The listing was taken offline early Friday.
The BBC were able to link Krivonogikh to the apartment through registry papers that listed her as the owner of the 447,400-square-meter residence.

It's kinda reassuring in a weird way, to realize that America isn't the only nation that is plagued by shitty political leaders, and leaders that make an ass out of themselves and embarrass the country every time they open their mouth.

God the shit that came out of Jimmy Carters mouth was second only to Obama's in its cringe worthiness. Remember when Jughead sent the Queen of England an iPod with his speeches on it as a gift?

Clinton's was usually about sex, so we could shrug and chuckle off his shit because I mean really, if FHRC was waiting for me at home I'd be nailing other ho's too.

And well... then there's FJB... just damn.

The party is a hybrid one, ideologically, but for whatever reason, nationalists (which get wrongly thrown on the Right by the non-nationalist Left, with calling them "far Right" being a sort of exclusionary pejorative) in the West tend to like Putin and his Russia, and as we can see, the U.S. is no exception.  It's the nationalist component of the party that results in it getting the "far Right" label.  It should also be noted that Russia and France have a long history of forming alliances, especially when in competition with Germany, so there is also some natural affinity there as well.

Most modern European revolutions are inspired by the ideologies born of the French Revolution.  That revolution had such a massively different character from those past that it effectively changed how we define the word; beforehand, it had more of a restorative connotation, which is how it was meant to be understood in the case of the American and Glorious Revolutions.  The latter were based on Rightist principles, the former was the birth of Leftism.  From the former ultimately sprang the Russian and German revolutions of the 20th Century.  There's a really good work explaining the radical difference between the revolutions by Friedrich Baron von Gentz.

Most European conservatives whose work I've read is, aside from a support for monarchy, not markedly different from American ones, and many seem to be true liberals.  Heck, one of my favorite conservative thinkers was from Austria.

Does this asshole wake up every morning, roll a D20, and consult a table to determine which side he's on?

Prime Minister Viktor Orbn evidently condemns the massacre committed in Bucha, Ukraine, his press chief said on Saturday.

Hungary will in every possible form support the international investigation aimed at identifying the perpetrators of that bloodshed, Bertalan Havasi cited the prime minister's position on Saturday.

Orbn made it clear at his international press conference on Wednesday that "this is a war that Russia started attacking Ukraine, which is aggression," adding that it is the European Union's position "which Hungary shares." The prime minister urged an independent and impartial probe into the atrocities, saying that civilians must be protected and violence against them must be "most firmly condemned", the press chief said.

What's wild to me is the absolute blizzard of contradictory and honestly idiotic justifications for this conflict that we see pouring out of Russia right now. To me it all smells of desperation - it's what people do when they *know* in their hearts that they are wrong but they have to press forward for the sake of pride and lost self-respect.

The rest of the world sees this - I wonder if anyone inside Russia does as well?

Most European conservatives whose work I've read is, aside from a support for monarchy, not markedly different from American ones, and many seem to be true liberals.  Heck, one of my favorite conservative thinkers was from Austria.

I know European politics is odd, but in what world are the "far right" and Putin on the same team?

That's something I can not wrap my head around same as so called conservatives here supporing a gun banning dictator invading a country that essentially lossened their gun laws and went full Wolverine.

For Yurp it's pretty much explained that lost on the far right are follow a pure state authoritarian path and not so much an individual libery path. Also worth noting that the American revolution is one of the few that didnt devolve in to defacto fascism.

The Yurpean far right I kind on know and that bullshit is pretty standard there, some of the Arfcommers really made be scratch my head as I would not have expected it.

Make no mistake Russia sees this as a war against Western values they metaphysically MUST win.

To add onto this (at the risk of derailing the thread), conservatism in 19th century Europe was based around restoring the power to the monarchy, the aristocracy, and the clergy, thus rolling back the changes caused by the French Revolution. Conservatism was actually in opposition to nationalism and liberalism.

Great find. Russia's Genocide Handbook by Timothy Snyder

Worth the read, even if posted before.

If you don't know who Snyder is, her is quite the historical expert on genocide and tyranny in Russia, Eastern Europe, and Germany. If you haven't read his books, you should, particularly Bloodlands. On Tyranny is on my read list.

Youre confusing "deployed" forces with entire forces. ALmost all of Russias BTGs were involved in Ukraine. The US didnt throw WW2 levels of anything at Korea.

What a pathetic nation.  When this is all said and done I hope there is a hundred thousand dead Russians fertilizing the farmland in Ukraine.
