I was wondering why I see so many passably Latina appearing women from there.

If we hold with the ancients, the scythians of those days did not look like today's Iranians.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scythians#Physical_appearance

In Histories, the 5th century BC Greek historian Halicarnassus of Halicarnassus describes the Budini of Scythia as red-haired and grey-eyed. In the 5th century BC, Greek physician Hippocrates argued that the Scythians were light skinned as well as having a particularly high rate of hypermobility, to a point of affecting warfare. In the 3rd century BC, the Greek poet Callimachus described the Arismapes (of Scythia as fair-haired. The 2nd-century BC Han Chinese envoy Zhang Qian described the Sai (Saka), an eastern people closely related to the Scythians, as having yellow (probably meaning hazel or green) and blue eyes. In Natural History, the 1st century CE Roman author Pliny the Elder characterises the Seres, sometimes identified as Saka or Tocharians, as red-haired, blue-eyed and unusually tall. In the late 2nd century AD, the Christian theologian Clement of Alexandria says that the Scythians and the Celts have long auburn hair. The 2nd century Greek philosopher Polemon includes the Scythians among the northern peoples characterised by red hair and blue-grey eyes.

Bad units rode in trucks, slept in, and their patrol bases looked like gypsy camps, hootched up 24/7.  Bad units were about twice as good as the Russians.  You can tell some of these Ukrainians have excellent field discipline. Hunter or hunted types of indicators.  The Brits, when I worked with them, had outstanding field discipline.  The USMC did as well.

These were all the sorts of little useless things that we all incorporated as to "field discipline."  There was a period of time when young guys had no combat experience and old guys were Vietnam vets, and to be honest there was a strong crossover between Ranger school, things guys did in Vietnam, and the sorts of things a CSM might be looking for when he eyeballs your perimeter.

A lot of leaders were light on garrison discipline, like spitshining boots and barracks inspection, but a good trooper dug in and pulled security, and was up at stand to.  A good LT took his turn on radio watch and trooped the lines between 0100 and 0400.  Everyone dug their own holes.

I would hope it makes a comeback, along with the other sorts of things.  In my experience noone really likes discipline, but troopers took pride and would show ownership of field discipline if there was a point to it.  Sometimes one unit would ruck by another and there would be eyeballing and sizing each other up.  Noone really cared about drill, spit and polish.

Stuff like that soldiers complain about that non-sexy Army stuff, but it pays off in the end.

There was probably an environmental issue involved, I remember late in my military career, if you wanted to build fighting positions or entrench you had to plan it way in advance and get the base environmental people involved at most bases.

You're right about that. It would probably be easier to get a hasty SDZ approved to fire into an occupied training area than to get approval to dig fighting positions in a fucking field.

Aberdeen proving ground is all a wetland wildlife preserve… if you want to do ANY new disruption of the soil or building of any kind, be it a parking lot or a shed, you have to move prohibitive mountains of paperwork…

Yep, how a society treats the helpless be it the infirm, children, or animals is a great barometer on the health of that society.

As I posted in regards to the video of the folks helping evacuate and shelter the dogs and cats a few pages ago...

Proverbs 12:10: A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast: but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.

Interesting, this is related to US chip manufacturing and new export regulations affecting China.

The US government's new export controls are wreaking havoc on China's chip industry.
New rules around "US persons" are driving an "industry-wide decapitation."

People don't think software-based control and royalty systems be like they is, but they do.

China can make copies of chips for which we provide them designs. Their chip design programs and fabs don't run without some phone-home action.

I'm not saying the chinese couldn't bypass those systems and run on their own, but they'd do so at considerable outright expense, delay and cost compared to using developed, western-based systems.

The chicoms can domestically roll low-yield 7nm on equipment they control, but they can't scale it, at least not yet.

In the US there'd be a bunch of dead cops.  The press gang guys would need to go out in armored vehicles and full battle rattle.  As a society we would never tolerate this - it just shows me how different the Russians are from any free society.

The whole problem with people on both ends of the Musk spectrum is that he is not some perfect hero or villain.  He is a wicked smart and driven aspy dude, with a shit load of money and a penchant for speaking his mind openly on the internet.

For me, his sincerity is evident from there inconsistencies in his messaging and beliefs. He speaks of goals and aspirations and falls short of the often. He will cross some lines if he believes that it will advance one of his critical goals.

One of his main goals seems to be to get the human race to a point where we can avoid our own extinction.  While supporting Ukraine makes sense to him, there is a logical limit to most people. He is okay with spending $100M of his companies money to provide a communication system for Ukraine to fight a conventional war, but it stops short of a full scale nuclear exchange.  Hence, his willingness to propose a plan that would let Russia keep some of its stolen land.

Our thirst for heros and villains drives us to irrationality and is ultimately ripping our country apart

Does Lukoil use gas station canopies that are as sturdy as the ones Esso had in Italy?

Maybe we'll find out soon.

In today's America, you are one or the other with no middle ground. Everyone is forming up into sides and someone like Musk is confounding...both teams want to own him but only when he is 100%. I think Trump was a little like this...non-ideological and yet very pragmatic.
