Most of the people on this forum love the Founding Fathers, in spite of them being flawed men in terms of their racial views, being slave holders, etc. Some people who fly the Confederate flag do so not necessarily because they're racist, but because it symbolizes rebelliousness and opposition to centralized authority. For many of the Ukrainians who fly the UPA flag and like Bandera (we'll ignore the fact that calling WW2-era Ukrainian nationalists Nazis is over-reductionist), it's just due to the fact that he was anti-Russian/Soviet and tried to carve out an independent Ukrainian state. The fact that Bandera elicits a deep, gutteral hatred in the Russians certainly doesn't hurt matters. |

Guys who like Bandera and fly the UPA flag have been fighting in Eastern Ukraine for a decade at this point. It hasn't been a serious issue over that timeframe, and, until proven otherwise, I'll maintain that it's not a serious issue. Azov (the supposed neo-Nazi fanatics) garrisoned Mariupol for eight years, and there wasn't a single anti-Semitic attack by a member of the regiment over the course of those years. Right Sector has Jewish members who put the Star of David over the UPA flag (once again demonstrating that the meaning of symbols isn't set in stone). I'm not concerned. You also don't know what a neocon is, but that's par for the course. |
