Those leased aircraft that are sitting in Russia are going to stay there indefinitely. The ones that are used domestically over there are going to be "nationalized" by the Russian government. The ones that can operate internationally had already gotten out. Those companies are going to lose a *lot* of money.

If only 10 percent hit their targets thats still twice as many as the current Chinese arsenal.

We have no idea what the actual size of the Chinese arsenal is.  Given the number of official strategic warheads they have hasn't increased, literally, since 2000, and they've deployed at least 3 strategic platforms since then, I suspect the estimates for Chinese nuclear forces are way under the actuals.

Talking to China about anything is a waste of time.

They will lie when it suits them and reneg on any deal they make.

Outcompeting China and building leverage against them is the only answer.

Same place they get all their other information, they make it up or get talking points from the propaganda lead. Are you not familiar with the Pfailed Pfizer Pfropaganda team?

There is some likelihood that given the convoy that was all bunched up that got decimated yesterday(?) and had to retreat, that the Russians are trying to keep that from happening again. Spreading them out helps in that regard but also reduces their ability to mass forces for an attack. Seems to me like it's a "we're losing the war and we need to adopt a more defensive posture here" kind of thing.

Assume 4X WIA, and that gets you anywhere from 20k WIA to 36K WIA, on top of 5K to 9K dead, for a total of 25K to 45K KIA/WIA.

Seeing as they went in with 200K soldiers, that means you've lost 10% to 25% of your invasion force in a week.

I would like to add to this that every time these numbers are published, the US figures are the conservative estimates. The EU/NATO and Ukrainian numbers are reported as significantly higher.

Yes, citation please.  This intelligence update flies in the face of what I've been seeing.  It seems like UKR is retaking some ground around Kiev and that the 40 mile convo hasn't moved closer to the city.

We're working with propaganda from both sides but is safe to say it's higher than 4k and most likely a lot higher.

I don't know these things. But I wonder if the time of the heavy damage to russian forces is going to be reduced as they are no longer strung out in vulnerable convoys. Though the people I hear talking about it say russia is entering the hardest part, urban warfare. I don't know how that translates to actual losses of russian resources as opposed to just being a stressful dangerous grind.
Hopefully the foreign legion is made up of experienced, fresh guys who can up the damage on russian troops. Though I'm sure the Ukranians want to use them for security and such so that actually Ukranians can take the fight to russia. I can understand that. But I'll bet those foreign legion guys showed up because they want to kill russians.

This was me. Russians are 23% of the Estonian population. A fair number of them are dickheads. Younger ones are much better for the most part as they’re also at bare minimum also English speakers and are exposed to far more than just Russian sources.

And it was the World Cup,not much care about the super bowl here but a subset of Russians really were quite happy about Crimea. They’re silent now, partially because public opinion is so strong in favor of UA and also they don’t want to be on a losing team. Crimea was an easy ego boost.

A commercial satellite company said the convoy had dispersed. Not an official source so like everything else take with a huge grain of salt. The Ukrainians launched counter attacks ne of Kiev and outside of Kharkov that supposedly drove the Russians back but we don't know how significant they were in the grand scheme of things.

Casualties will go up. Russians are assaulting urban areas where they are outnumbered, which is not a recipe for success in the first place. Ukrainian casualties will also increase as the territorials get pinned down and the pockets shrink until there is nowhere outside artillery range.

I was talking with an army officer last night and we guessed in two months the death figures will be something like Russia and UAF 25,000 each and 200,000 civilians.

That's ridiculous. North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Missouri,Texas, Alabama, Mississippi sure - but not the east coast.

[Last Edit: stone-age] [#46]
"A 40-mile-long (64km) Russian military convoy, composed of tanks, armored vehicles and towed artillery, has sparked dread among defending Ukrainians as it lumbered towards their capital, Kyiv.

"The column has been stalled for a week, but now the forces appear to be regrouping, according to Maxar Technologies satellite imagery taken on Thursday, which showed parts of the convoy had "largely dispersed and redeployed."
Russia is regrouping for a possible attack on Kyiv, say UK defense officials, after initially making limited progress in its advancement towards the capital."

That's an ironic name to drop in a thread where one of the primary concerns is civilian casualties...

Ok, that's what I have seen as well- someone yesterday said 4k, but I've seen nothing from the Russians themselves either.

Right, that's why I was curious if the Russians were actually admitting to 4k. I think whoever said that was confused about Pentagon estimates vs Russian estimates.

Considering how bad the Russian logistics and coms seem to be I doubt they have any idea how many they have lost.
