After WW1 in the UK they rewarded those who contributed to the war effort with war booty. Depending on contribution, you could receive a rifle, a machine gun or artillery piece.

Recent upset, activity was shooting?
Most people are denied firearms in Great Britain, while the royals have family meetings where the activity is a shooting party. Story doesn't say if they are doing Trap or Skeet, or released game or just plinking, but does demonstrate that Great Britain is still very much a society where your allowable actions are controlled by your class. Low class people are forbidden to have guns and aren't even allowed to defend themselves while the high class people have shooting parties and military guards. |

Seventh Infantry Div. returned from the Western Desert. |

It was revolution prevention. Meanwhile in America, appearing like a specter out of nowhere with little notice and then disappearing like a fart in the wind…

Shotguns are the US equivalent of shall issue - they can only deny if you are a criminal or otherwise prohibited. Firearms - the applicant has to show good reason ( target shooting or hunting ) and they can deny if you have not satisfied them with that reason. |
