SNF is Chiefs @ Falcons.

Speaking of announcers…

Tom Brady’s first three career games as an announcer ALL being Cowboys games is exactly why I was so happy when Buck and Aikman left FOX.

Panthers at 7?

[Last Edit: David_ESM] [#20]
Via Sports Business Daily, every fan attending Sunday night's Chiefs-Falcons game will receive free hot dogs, free bags of chips, and a free soda in a souvenir cup.

The move celebrates Falcons owner Arthur Blank's entry into Ring of Honor maintained by the franchise he owns.

Making the food free is a nod to Blank's decision to make the food cheap - far cheaper than most captive NFL audiences pay. Hot dogs are normally only $2.

In anticipation of the game, 100,000 hot dogs have been ordered. That's 10 to 20 times the usual amount. For all of the 2023 season, 82,000 hot dogs were sold during Falcons home games.

There's a two-per-person limit on hot dogs and chips, with unlimited refills on drinks.

That's very generous of Blank to give away free food in honor of himself.

Wonder what they have planned for the Thursday night game, Matt Ryan is set to be inducted into the Ring of Honor that night.

The Packers game last Sunday was the 2nd hottest game ever at Lambeau and I heard they ran out of bottled water in many sections of the stadium before halftime which they were selling for $6 each.

Interesting article (to me) on ESPN about the insurance policies that teams take out on the players themselves to protect the salary when they are injured. Starts by going off on the Jets for not insuring Rodgers last year.

When Aaron Rodgers tore his Achilles after four snaps last season, NFL agents and club employees went straight to their laptops to confirm something they suspected -- There was no insurance addendum in Rodgers' contract.

The Jets renegotiated Rodgers' contract after trading for him and didn't buy an insurance policy to secure a portion of the $37 million in guaranteed money owed to the quarterback in 2023. Green Bay had a policy on Rodgers, but the Jets had no relationship with the broker who sold the Packers the policy. With the snap of Rodgers' left Achilles tendon, that $37 million for a player who wouldn't play could never be recovered.

Last October, Sportico first reported that the Jets declined to purchase insurance on Rodgers' contract to protect the team if he missed games for injury or illness. The Jets missed out on recouping up to $22 million in insurance proceeds by not purchasing one of several policies ranging in price from $1 million to $4 million, per the report.

Not mentioned was the biggest loss the Jets suffered by forgoing insurance, the very reason that Buffum calls this a tragedy: the corresponding salary cap relief.

More in the Link

Couple interesting highlights:
  • Insurance premiums taken against a player's salary, do not count against the cap.
  • Clubs aren't required to file insurance policies to the league office or the NFLPA.
  • Insurance payouts are considered a "refund from the player" which goes back into the cap as a credit for the following season's cap.
  • Insurance policies are issued almost exclusively by two brokers.
  • The number of policies purchased by teams have doubled in the last 5 seasons.
  • Aprox 50% of NFL teams have at least one player policy.
  • Aprox 75% of all teams have purchased a policy before.
  • The increased number of claims paying out has spiked the cost of the policies. Estimated at a 30-40% increase in the last 5 seasons.
  • 4 of the 7 starting QBs last year did NOT have insurance policies. Watson, Burrow and Herbert were all insured for their time out. The Browns and Bengals did record 2024 cap credits from their payouts.
  • The Packers and Dolphins both have policies on Love and Tua who are now injured. Tua's contract is insured for $49.3M but is unknown whether it covers concussions (Dolphins no commented).
  • The Bengals purchased their first policy on the Joe Burrow extension.
  • Goff's extension is not covered.
  • Dak's extension and previous extension had insurance policies.
  • The Eagles lead the league in player policies with at least 16 players being covered for 2024. Hurts insured for $63.75M in coverage, AJ Brown for $29.8M.
  • The 49ers had policies on Jimmy G, Dee Ford and George Kittle when they all missed numerous games in 2020. They cap credited a total of $11.2M going into the 2021 season.
  • CMC is insured for up to $15M this season. Him going on IR means the club will receive a payout and credit for the 2025 season.
  • The Cardinals had Kyler Murray insured and had a $5M cap credit after his ACL injury.

Speaking of refs:

It is insane to me that for a PART TIME job paying AT LEAST $205,000, these are the best refs the NFL could find.

I think it's somewhat important to remember that we're watching these games in 4k with zoomed in cameras and instant replays, and these refs are watching these things in real time from fixed positions on the field, there's 22 different guys doing different things, and most of these guys aren't young.

Things that happen around the ball when it's in the backfield or the secondary should be easier for those guys to see and call correctly, but stuff that happens in traffic between linemen is a lot harder.

They could go to the eye in the sky more, but that could make the games unwatchable very quickly.

If they wanted calls to be more accurate, there is still room to add additional officials to every crew, and places you could put them where they would not interfere with an active play, but there's also a negative to doing that... More penalties.

More eyes = more accurate penalties + more called penalties.

It's kind of a law of diminishing returns situation. Where on the curve do we want to be? Where on that curve are you providing the greatest entertainment possible?

Edit: Ignoring the gambling side of things, we often lose track of the fact that the NFL is "entertainment". It isn't an industry that needs to be perfect and get everything right. It just needs to make money. And sometimes getting it wrong can make just as much money as getting it right.

I’m not talking about bang-bang plays or stuff that would be easy to miss.

I’m talking about wildly inconsistent egregious calls and no-calls.

There would be holding penalties on every play because there is holding on every play to some degree. Nobody wants to see that.

Ticky tack holding calls: yes.

Defensive players being put in headlocks, form tackled, etc. holding calls: no.
