Falcon 9 booster has little choice but to "suicide burn" as it cannot hover.   Can't throttle down enough to make 1:1 thrust to weight.

And now Elon want's to scrap the idea of a re-useable booster/2nd stage because he has 'get there itis' for half an orbit ?
None of those plans are remotely close to his initial claims, scrapping things like landing gear and reusability have gone out the window.

The point is, he's got to get that stuff off the ground and return it safely before he starts hauling the mail.

And he is overdue and once again under delivering.

I love his F9 success, but so far his Starship endeavors have fallen short of his promises.

Do you even have enough mental horsepower to wrap your head around how a fast iterative development process works?

They haven't given up on landing, they are performing soft virtual landings over the water to make sure the system works first.

Your posts are full of hysterical nonsense.

Wow, the purse swinging!

The GD launch complex is not even built yet and Starship is a failure all the sudden?
Yea, OK.

I just don't buy in to Musks koolaid, the guy is full of broken promises.

"This is the final design of Starship" comes to mind.
As well as his launch timelines, 2 weeks becomes 2 months, 2 months become 2 years.

I believe the entire Starship program is headed for disaster because of his "get there itis" attitude that has now become a shell of his lofty claims.
What's he going to do next, strip it of the TPS to get it to fly for a photo op so he can continue patting himself on the back ?

But it is, after all, his money and he can burn through it as fast as Starship is going to burn up in the atmosphere (if it ever gets high enough to deorbit).

Fucking what?.  The upcoming orbital test is a TPS test. Musk even expects the starship to not live through reentry. Its quite possible that the booster has issues the first time but guess what.. thats what the tests are for. N-1 didnt work because they didnt do vibration and heat tests.  Somehow, I doubt SX will make that same mistake.  Building launch vehicles is really fucking hard and the bigger they are, the harder they are.  Just look at Astra and Fireflys failures recently.

yep, and the landing and reuse, doesn't cost them all that much mass.

even without recovery, as a single-use vehicle, this combo would be cheaper than a single SLS engine, possibly a lot cheaper. for 1.5x the tonnage to LEO.

SLS is 2 billion per..

Even if these cost 100 million each...
which its probably far less...

Spacex can probably build and launch 20 of these and put 30x times the mass in LEO for the cost of one SLS without landing a single one...

I'm just thinking how amazing it is that we've gone from:

'You'll never be able to land a Rocket, C'mon...'

to

'Holy shit we can land a Rocket!'

to

'Holy shit we can land a rocket on a Barge!'

to

'Holy Shit, look at the new barge they're landing rockets on!'

...All in about 6 years.

Visibility during ascent, 1st stage re-entry burn and landing burn.

It may be too late after sunset to get great plume illumination but I would watch the entire ascent outside.  Maybe close to stage separation the rocket enters sunlight.  Almost surely by the end of the second stage burn it should be sunlit

Another thing to look for is the re-entry burn.  You can see the landing point in the following chart:

Imagine that the burn occurs high up about 80-90% of the distance from lift-off to ocean recovery.  That will be south-southeast from Vandenberg, due south from Los Angeles and south-southwest from San Diego.  Elevation (distance above the horizon) is unknown so scan from the horizon up.  Even from Vandenberg I am guessing (no data to back it up) that the re-entry burn will be at least 30 degrees above the horizon.  There was a recent Florida night launch where the re-entry burn was observed from Florida.

I would look for the landing burn too.  Verify the azimuth and it should be near the horizon.   I would use binoculars.  Without having better info people further south have a better chance of seeing the landing burn.

70 degree orbit requires more energy so they have to drop the payload mass to compensate.  These may be larger thus heavier as well.
