Maybe the people who write article only seek comments from commie socialist types, but this article and the one above from Vermont do not make the people there look like Americans.

"That could be ideal for rural Mainers, but one of the state's leading broadband advocates expressed concerns about Starlink's cost, reliability and potential to kill momentum for more community-minded broadband projects."

"In terms of statewide broadband policy, however, she has some questions. Starlink is a welcome option for Mainers in hard-to-reach locations and for those who don't like their current internet service provider. It's an expensive option, though, and it doesn't address the issue of equity.

"We want to make sure everybody has broadband," she said, "so that no matter what your economic status is, you have access to this tool for education, for working, for health care, for community and civic activity.""

The last comment is just asinine:

Education....go to school.

Working......go to work.

Health care....see a doctor in person or call.

Community.....Community is not online.

Civic activity....also not online.

What an uneducated opinion these statements represent.  Access to inexpensive internet is analogous to access to clean water.

SpaceX prepares for Air Force test connecting an aircraft to its Starlink satellite internet

"Elon Musk’s SpaceX is preparing to further test its Starlink satellite internet in a demonstration for the U.S. Air Force, the company revealed in a recent request to the Federal Communications Commission.

“SpaceX seeks to make minor modifications to its experimental authorization for additional test activities undertaken with the federal government,” the company wrote to the FCC in a filing on Thursday.

“The tests are designed to demonstrate the ability to transmit to and receive information from (1) two stationary ground sites and (2) one airborne aircraft at one location, and would add to these (3) limited testing from a moving vehicle on the ground,” SpaceX said."

Elon Musk wants to connect RVs and trucks to the internet through SpaceX’s Starlink satellites

"SpaceX is working on an antenna that will connect vehicles like semi-trucks and RVs to its satellite internet network, CEO Elon Musk said in a tweet on Monday.

Musk clarified that the antenna will not be for “connecting Tesla cars to Starlink,” saying that the user “terminal is much too big.”

“This is for aircraft, ships, large trucks & RVs,” Musk said."

This is why they have such a large fleet planned - among many other things. The HTS market is also headed for some more throughput per satellite, which will allow SpaceX to replace sats with better performing models on a rolling basis. Remember, they aren't planning to leave these satellites up there forever. IIRC, the expected lifespan of a Starlink sat is only 5 years.

Both ground stations and satellites have phased array antennas. Each satellite can communicate on the same frequencies simultaneously so the bandwidth capability is incredible.

60 more just went up. That's 240 just this month, March. There's 1321 in orbit now. I would bet that none  these last 240 and probably more from last month aren't online yet, once they are it should expand the areas that can get Starlink pretty good.

Speeds are up this morning.  I've had it for a little over a month.  Seems pretty solid so far.  Occasional outages (less than a minute) but overall I have been very pleased.  Kids have said their gaming is better.  Software updates are much faster than my previous internet.

The starlink router only has one port so I would not recommend it, but it would work fine.  You can use whatever router you want with starlink.  My Reolink system is fine (it doesn't know or care where the internet comes from)

They work on mine. I had to shut them off, though. This is a new to me CCP camera (probably watching me fill my pleasure journal), it works great, but its a little aggressive with respect to motion sensing. Every time a turkey or a deer walks past it wakes me up. I have it on minimum sensitivity, but it still thinks a turkey is a man. And there must be 100 turkeys out there.

ETA - I have mine set up with some extra bits between starlink and my home network.

The Starlink box goes into into a failover switch (that also has legacy LTE modem as failover) - that switch feeds my mesh wifi network setup. This cam is wifi not POE.

But I've been testing it with the failover LTE shut down just to see what kind of service I get. I still have drop outs (due to trees, my issue) and so I turn the LTE on if I have a critical thing, like a work meeting over zoom.

So I'm still waiting on my preorder...

For shits and giggles I went to their pre-order page and typed in my address and a few addresses close by. All of them say "not available in your area yet"

I'm assuming that means a ton of people in my area pre-ordered and have filled up whatever local bandwidth they currently have.

I've been following this, and I find conflicting information about how Starlink is populating the sky. But....

This site Satellite Map purports to show their flight path and ground stations. I can confirm that the ground station listed as closest to me (Colburn, ID) is accurate. I don't know about the flight paths, but if I'm linked to the orbital plane that I think I am, it makes sense that I cut out when I do.

OneWeb CEO: Here’s why our product is different than Elon Musk’s SpaceX Starlink

"But OneWeb CEO Neil Masterson, who joined the company in November after its emergence from last year’s bankruptcy, does not see Elon Musk’s space business as a direct competitor despite the comparisons.

Putting it simply, Masterson said that OneWeb’s “approach to the market is just very different” versus Starlink, with the former focused on enterprise customers and the latter going direct to consumers’ households.

“There are some areas where we will compete, I suspect, particularly around serving governments, but governments will always buy more than one service,” Masterson told CNBC. “I think there’ll be multiple players who will be able to be able to be successful in addressing their market.”

OneWeb’s “proposition is very simple,” Masterson said: “We provide fiber where there is no fiber,” whether that’s cellular backhaul, acting as an emergency backup, or building WiFi networks for remote factories and manufacturing.

“One of the reasons we’re going down that sort of B2B route is because we think that those players already working in those markets and communities ... understand the price points of the end consumers really well,” Masterson said. “Those price points [can be] very different in different parts of the world.”"

So, stepped up the Starlink game this week and now have the TP-LINK TL-R605 in the mix along with a TP-Link TL-SG2008P and a TP-Link Omada Hardware Controller. I have the AUX port on the Starlink router plugged directly into the wall which in turn routes into one of the WAN ports on the router in a different room in the house. So two WAN connections (ZiplyFiber and Starlink) into the router along with the switch. Everything else in the house is wired into the switch and everything is working like a damn champ. POE works as advertised.

Anecdotal story, sample size: one.

I'm at 48.5 N. I've got great S and E exposure, W is not great, N has some trees obstructing.

I have three 100' trees to remove once the ground dries a bit more.

I've had drop outs from obstructions every couple of minutes.

Following the satellite maps/launches is interesting. The addition of more of them has made a noticeable difference in my drop-out rate. I still get drop outs, but it's now something like one every 8-10 mins vs every 2-3.

Streaming, web use, etc is great since a little buffering helps . Live stuff like a zoom call is still tough. The challenge is that when its on, I've got great service. When it's obstructed, it just stops the feed. It doesn't disconnect it, which is interesting, but it just stops. It's frustrating. My neighbor has it and his is great since he has a clear view of the northern sky.

Chainsaws for the win.

Does anyone else kinda get the strange feeling that Elon Musk is somehow trying to prepare for some huge apocalyptic event? I mean, think about it, he always talks about how his cars are sealed from outside contagions and, in the case of the cyber truck, is “bulletproof.” His Solar and power walls allow people to live off grid. He also owns a company which bores bigass holes into the earth, for living underground maybe. SpaceX is always talking about send humans to live on Mars. And, now, Starlink has the potential to maintain global communication in the event of some sort of major catastrophe.

Elon Musk's Starlink internet exceeds 200 Mbps in new tests

"Starlink is now reaching speeds so fast that users in rural Montana can watch Falcon and The Winter Soldier on Disney Plus in 4K.

The latest findings comes via a report from Wccftech, which asked users who currently have the service to send in recent speed tests. What reporter Ramish Zafar found was that in both cities and rural America, speeds were exceeding 200 Mbps.

A reader out in Montana provided reports of 190 Mbps. Whereas in Seattle and New York, users reported speeds at 230 or 240 Mbps. These are very competitive speeds, even for an urban environment. "
