Wanna see what 55gr Federal ammo at gas pressures of 60,000 PSI, jetted through a small gas port will do to 6061 aluminum?

.065 port, 16" carbine length gas barrel, 25 rounds total. Nearly cut completely through the sleeve.
Attachment Attached File

This is the reason I always completely tear down a new project to inspect everything after a short trip to the range.
And also why I had on mechanics gloves. I have a feeling if I had shot longer and popped that sleeve open, those gasses could slice right through a thumb.

I had planned to make the sleeve from stainless after prototyping, but figured it would last at least a trip or two to the range (wrong). The gas block sleeve sits in the same spot as any carbine gas block. The joint between the barrel and gas sleeve are not noticeable, the hang grip band covers where the two parts meet to keep a seamless appearance. I considered welding the hole up and filing it smooth, but I read this can warp a barrel. I opted to tap 5/40 threads and add a stainless set screw.  The first tap broke off, which took and hour to extract, I cussed the hole time. I will still make a new sleeve from stainless, this with some red locktite on the set screw should do the trick.

Attachment Attached File

Since I have to Cerakote a new sleeve, I will also re-coat the barrel. I painted the barrel before installing the gas sleeve, the gas cut right through most of the cerakote under the sleeve. I sanded very little, only to get the carbon off. Gasses cause some metal spalling on the barrel around the port as well, not enough to be an issue though.

You should start a separate Red RydAR thread. I’m sure you would generate even more interest in purchases. That is a thing of beauty!  I’m am just amazed at your engineering ability to make the lever action.

ETA-If you can make it work with 308, then PSA can re-release the lower in an AR10 platform.

Thank you for the compliment sir. You are probably correct that it would get more attention with it's own thread (not always a good thing on ARFCOM). I posted here because it was a theme build from the Christmas lower, so it relates. The SPACEFORCE-15 thread I started after a few suggested I do so, died after a month and was archived. For that reason, I wanna make sure this thread keeps up the post count to maintain interests. It slowed a bit at the start of the summer season, folks enjoying the weather.

Concerning the AR-10, the design would work just as well for that platform. Using the same gear ration the throw would be longer by maybe 1/2" or so. The teeth could be adjusted to compensate the longer cartridge if the lever interfered with the magazine. I do not think it would even come close as is though, the chrginging distance as-is is about 1.65" at the distal end.

Steel should prevent that. I flipped a gas block backwards on my blackout some time back to make it a straight pull bolt. No cutting noticed. After 50-100 rounds the port was completely blocked off by a copper deposit.

As for the welding, if you use Tig and don't dwell on it you should be good. A little puddle to secure a tapped plug for example.

So what is this about Virginia state lowers? Cause I want a few!! If I am SBRing a lower I want to rep my state!

It really needs the freedom titty to complete it.

Question for you and everyone else interested in the VA lower:

How would everyone feel if we changed it to the "VIRTUE-15" instead of the "VIRGINIA-15"? And we changed the serial to "TRIUMPH0000"?

I ask because while the imagery would still be clearly for Virginia, if we removed the specific "Virginia" tag it could open the lower up to more people outside of the state.

For me personally, if this change was the difference between the lower being made or not (because it would open it up to more people outside VA) I'd take the change.

What does everyone else think? Does removing "Virginia" defeat the purpose? Or are you (like me) more interested in the imagery and the statement than the specific state being listed?

If you change the model to VIRTUE, then make the serial number "VA0000".

That's actually a much better idea, I like it. Reps Virginia without being overbearing to those outside the state.

@giantpune

But Why?

I agree in theory the concepts sounds good. I originally planned on this type of design early on. This is the reason the theme build has the lower feed tube.
Even with a tested and fully functional feed system (including a custom flush mount mag well storage bin), the numbers did not add up.

1. A standard upper & lower would no longer work for this design.
2. Crap ton of new parts, which could lead to additional failures.
3. really bad idea to stack 5.56 FMJ tip to end in a tube. (wouldn't wanna test drop that bad boy on the butt stock loaded! Chain reaction super bang!)
4. Completely unloading the tube would mean cycling ALL live rounds up through the chamber for extraction.
5. System is no longer compatible with any type of factory mags.
5. Another big drawback is that a 16" barrel is  about 406.5mm. So not including the length of the collapsed spring under tension, or the feed guide, the maximum round count for a 16" tube is Nine rounds. Seven realistically iwhen including mechanical parts. A ten round magazine is nearly flush to the lower reliever and eliminates all of the above concerns.

Function over form got the win.
But just to show I did consider that idea.

Any update on 14.5 / 14.7 barreled uppers?  I see there are four on the website with P&W 14.7" barrels, but all have lo-pro gas blocks and free-floated hand guard.  I'm looking for both 14.7" P&W nitride and CHF versions but with FSB and M4 profile barrels.  Any idea if / when I could expect to see this / these?  I've got 4 PSA M4A1 stripped lowers just waiting for the appropriate barrels.

@DerpSouth

Have any of the PX9 Yeet Cannon pre-orders seen the light of day? As I've now learned 4-6 weeks is the estimate for the ATF approval of the design (so Id blame the alphabet boys).

I’m not going to claim to know how the inner workings of PSA or the ATF are but I would think that with just the lowers that have been on the list for a while (not these surprise ones that have popped up) that the variance could be applied for before before the pre-sale that way they know it’s legal to produce before the sale goes live.

I had been asking in regards to the Minuteman. I've seen photos of them on the forum so I know they have started releasing them. It's going to be six weeks on Tuesday and I'm still on processing.

Each of my PSA orders have taken a week +. Given my age, I remember the old "6 to 8 weeks" on mail orders. So I was fine with that. The low prices were worth the wait. The only real reason for anyone to fret on a delayed delivery time is impatience... to get that package of PSA goodness into your hands. I felt like a kid waiting on Santa. So Santa didn't make it for Christmas...? Well I was just as happy when he arrived on New Year's Eve!

Yep, that's the one! When I was six, he wore red. Since my twenties, he's worn brown (or driven a FedEx truck). Those same emotions still well up in me when Santa arrives. Now he just needs to bring me one of those awesome Red RydARs next Christmas.

(With all of the vehicle emogies, we need one of a brown truck...)

anyone know whom i would send a copy of the artist's release? i assume @BrickWurX

Oh no, I didn't buy a 9mm lower, just a standard 5.56/.223 variant. I forgot they made the Yeet lower in 9mm too. I probably should've ordered one of those too but didn't.
