Was an EV being charged at the time and if so was the charger that ignited or the EV battery? Never charge those things in your house (garage is part of the house).
Did he have a smoke alarm in the garage and was it interconnected with other alarms inside the house? I have about eight smoke alarms in my residence but none are interconnected. |

Smoke detectors in a garage with an ICE vehicle is a bad idea. Particulates will cause them to false or fail.
Heat detector is what you seek. |

When I was still flying electric RC, I had a stainless-steel pan that I would put my batteries in to charge them, then put the pan on the stovetop in the kitchen (if I was charging them in the house). Fire during charging was a known danger, though it seemed to be less of a danger as chargers improved and began incorporating better tech to monitor the cells as they charged. I had one battery start smoking, but that was after a crash into a hard surface that visibly damaged the battery, and I think I only had one or two batteries swell up during charging. One of the guys I flew with had several batteries swell up during charging, but he was always quicker to switch to newer battery tech than I was (probably some bugs still being worked out by the manufacturers) and tended to push the current limits of the batteries more than I did. |
