Mucho pain. I've had painless rootcanals, but one was that horrible throbbing pain. Once it started ramping up, I felt odd about 5pm thursday night. By 2am Friday morning it was excrutiating. Unbelievable pain before, during, and after. But it wasnt as bad once everything got handled
Months later it felt funny. Turns out it had to get redone Found a new dentist for that.

I just had both wisdom teeth pulled and I am shaking in my boots thinking about the root canal I need. My first was a horrible experience, second I got the nitrous and all was good. I won't do another without the nitrous.

The filing itself didn't have any real pain for me.
The only problem I had was the temporary packing material he put in. Left it in there a few days, until the crown was made. When I went back to have the crown fitted, and he pulled out that material, I thought I would pass out the pain was so bad. It only lasted about 20 seconds, but it was the longest 20 seconds of my life. I don't know if the fill material they use under the crown is the same stuff they used to use, but I think it was basically close to the rubber they made those black Colt grips out of over 100yrs. ago. |

Just got up from the chair.
Bottom toof, lots of injections and half my mouth was numb and still needed a few extra when they hit the nerve. A bit of pain when they were scraping the bottom and sealing it up. But very bearable really. Top toof needed a lot less injections and a went a lot quicker. It's cleaned out now, and doc put a temp crown on it and will seal it up and put on the permanent crown next week. Wondering how it will be when the anesthesia wears off. Doc doesnt anticipate any pain but said I may feel a bit sore from all the injections he had to make. |

I hope you have a better experience than the one and only I had. Basically they couldn’t get me completely numb. They shot me up several times and waited what seemed like forever. I told them to do it and I squirmed and sweated in that chair. The nurse was almost in tears as she could see the pain I was in.
Finally the procedure was done! One week later it failed and I ended up having the tooth extracted. |

The two I've had done were relatively painless afterward during the day. It was a night trying to lay in bed that the severe throbbing pain would hit and make it impossible to try and sleep. After 2-3 days that subsided with each. That's where the Percocet was a godsend and would work in as little as 15 minutes of taking one.

I've had four or five, most were painless. One took about 6 months to calm down and now it's fine, it wasn't bad but I couldn't bite down on it hard.
When you do the bite down tests if you can feel anything at all the tooth is to high. I'll 3rd or 4th getting the work done at a place that can make the crown on site. |

@Johnny_Reno have them check for cracks in the tooth. I sat through 3 hours of torture in 3 different appointments before a specialist got all the root cleaned out. The tooth still hurt. I went back in and they said I had a crack in the tooth and it had to be pulled. FML

Whatever you do, do not go on Netflix and watch the documentary about how bad root canals are, they pretty much claim they are the cause of all of peoples health problems!!

Did OP survive his root canal??
Mine still hurts a bit when I eat. Not the sharp nerve pain, more like its sore from chewing a lot. Dull ache. Cant chew normally yet, I just take a pain killer before eating. I hope its just a matter of it settling down. Its only the 2nd day though. |

Had to have my first one done about a year ago.
Severe anxiety over it for nothing. Once it was numbed up it was painless. Barely even sore afterwards. |

I had to have one redone that was done about 10 years ago. Original dentist didn’t get the very tips of the root out. It got infected and I was left with an abscessed tooth.
Talk about pain. I wanted him to drill it so he could release the pressure. Once I got the first step done I was in heaven. It’s more pain in the ass than painful. I think the initial needle in my jaw was the most painful part. Good luck you’ll be fine. |

Probably the longest and sorta painful process I've been through (I was younger so my pain tolerance probably wasn't that great). Dentist touched a nerve or something and that was painful, to which the dentist said that was the loudest scream he's ever heard. Also squirted out a stream of blood. Wasn't painful (just swollen) afterwards.

I had one last year but then the tooth cracked in half so now I need it extracted and an implant done.
It was painless after they drilled the hole through and released the pus that had built up causing the pain. |

I know why people went crazy back in the old days.
Had 4 done over the winter months a few years ago. Have a high tolerance for pain, so meh. Felt better than the bad teeth in my head. |

Hell,I havent even had a dentist since I was a child offer me gas although my current dentist prescribed me a couple valiums before my root canal. I get severe anxiety ever since having that first wisdom tooth cut out at 18. |

Sitting in the chair now for initial evaluation. Hurts like hell. Can't wait to get this shit over with.
Edit: Turns out I need my broken tooth pulled and an implant. Problem is that I don't have enough bone for the implant so they are going to do a procedure to grow more bone. This whole thing is going to take up to a year to finish. Fuck. My. Life.
