Two engines... I wonder if they can't reliably get enough thrust from one.

Doesn't make a lot of sense to put twin engine in a smaller plane these days if you're going for export sales. Though the Navy wants them and I have to assume their engines are not quite up to par.

Only the US makes an engine power dense enough to replace two smaller engines in this sort of application. Even the newest Chinese engine can’t compare to the F135.

As stated by the media, only 30% of the shells Russia is currently using are manufactured domestically. If this is accurate, Russian Soviet-era ammo arsenals should be empty by now. To prove or refute this claim, I’ve reviewed Russian arsenals, and here are my observations.

Reported Russian shell usage ranged from 50,000 to 10,000 per day in Spring 2024. Given the numerous ammo dumps destroyed in 2022 following the deployment of HIMARS, the sheer number of shells used is enormous, which should have strained the Soviet-era ammunition supply.

According to The Insider, Russia has been refurbishing and producing 1.7 million shells annually since 2014, totaling at least 13.6 million shells, along with an unknown quantity of older shells that needed refurbishing due to their age by 2022.

So, by 2024, Russian arsenals should theoretically be depleted, with the remaining shells or rockets likely used up by now. The best way to confirm this—yes, you guessed it—is via satellite imagery.

We don’t have fresh imagery for every arsenal, but for the largest ones, the trend is visible. Let’s go through them.

The first is the 1819th artillery munition base, which stores (obviously) artillery munitions. By September 2024, it’s nearly empty, with only junk piles scattered. Some ammo remains, but I’d estimate 90% is gone, and the rest is questionable.

The 2719th Artillery Ammunition Base didn’t hold much to begin with, but by September 2024, it was completely empty.

As shown in the pictures, this base was primarily used for ammo disposal.

1215th Central Artillery Ammunition Base. Same story here. I’m unsure what’s in those white boxes, but I doubt there’s anything usable at this stage (“What’s in the box?!”).

73rd Arsenal GRAU: Primarily underground bunkers, but the outdoor storage sections are nearly empty by September 2024. It looks like they’re clearing the area, perhaps for more bunkers. A train there appears to be loaded with 3m slim boxes, likely MLRS rockets.

The 100th arsenal is almost empty, with large cleared areas around it.

For the 7th arsenal, we don’t have recent satellite imagery, but by autumn 2022, significant depletion was already evident, with entire sections gone.

The 51st arsenal, in September 2024, showed much less activity compared to October 2022. Sections near the train station are empty, likely due to either reduced shipments or an effort to keep everything inside bunkers for protection. It seems an incident occurred there.

These observations from the arsenals storing ammo outside indicate little Soviet-era ammunition remains available.

Arsenals closer to the Ukrainian border serve as logistics hubs for recently produced and North Korean-provided shells. Some were destroyed recently as you can't store ammunition 2000 km away from the front lines, so these logistics points must stay closer.

Regarding artillery from storage, Highmarsed, Jompy, and Covet Cabal have reported that Russians have taken over 8K SPGs and towed guns (without mortars) from storage. If they average 20K shells used per day, Russia would have used over 18 million shells by mid-2024.

Given a gun barrel loses accuracy after around 3,000 shells, it suggests that over 6,000 barrels may have worn out. However, some of these reported shells are mortar shells, and storage guns also replace destroyed ones. So, the estimate of 8,000 "used" artillery pieces fits.

Key points of this thread:

- Russia has indeed depleted its Soviet-era shell reserves.

- The role and contribution of North Korea are underestimated. According to media reports, Russia now produces between 3 and 4.3 million shells per year—8,000-12,000 per day, but it isn’t enough to maintain the 2022-2023 usage pace. North Korean support is crucial.

- Russia’s artillery reserves are still substantial, likely enough for another 2+ years. Training with North Korean artillery has already been reported though. You might disagree, but they’ve had more artillery guns in storage than tanks and BMPs combined.

That’s it for now!

I recently looked up gun ownership rates (estimated) by country. Israel is at 6.7 guns per 100 people. Given the environment they're in, that surprises me. Switzerland is lower than many might think: 27.6 per 100. Which is less than Montenegro for example at 39.1.

You need to look at Israel’s gun laws to understand that number. Pre October 7th their laws really sucked. I don’t know if they have changed since then.

FBI Statement on Bomb Threats to Polling Locations

The FBI is aware of bomb threats to polling locations in several states, many of which appear to originate from Russian email domains. None of the threats have been determined to be credible thus far.

Election integrity is among the FBI’s highest priorities. We will continue to work closely with our state and local law enforcement partners to respond to any threats to our elections and to protect our communities as Americans exercise their right to vote.

As always, we urge the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to state or local law enforcement, or submit tips to the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324) or online at tips.fbi.gov.

My understanding of the Swiss laws is that while you can technically buy guns, what you can do with them is very limited, plus you're liable for anything bad that happens if the gun is stolen.

Ukrainian troops engage with North Korean units for 1st time in Russia, official says

By ILLIA NOVIKOV ASSOCIATED PRESS  •  November 5, 2024

KYIV, Ukraine — Ukrainian troops have for the first time engaged with North Korean units that were recently deployed to help Russia in the war with its neighbor, Ukraine’s defense minister said Tuesday.

Another Kyiv official said Ukraine’s army fired artillery at North Korean soldiers in Russia’s Kursk border region. The comments were the first official reports that Ukrainian and North Korean forces have engaged in combat, following a deployment that has given the war a new complexion as it approaches its 1,000-day milestone. Neither claim could be independently confirmed.

The Ukrainian and North Korean troops engaged in “small-scale” fighting that amounted to the start of Pyongyang’s direct involvement in Europe’s biggest conflict since World War II, Ukraine’s Defense Minister Rustem Umerov told South Korea’s public broadcaster KBS in an interview.

North Korean soldiers are mixed with Russian troops and are misidentified on their uniforms, Umerov was quoted as saying by KBS. That makes it hard to say whether there were any North Korean casualties, he said.

Umerov reportedly said he expects that five North Korean units, each consisting of about 3,000 soldiers, will be deployed to the Kursk area.

Meanwhile, Andrii Kovalenko, the head of the counter-disinformation branch of Ukraine’s Security Council, said “the first North Korean troops have already been shelled, in the Kursk region.” He provided no further details.

Western governments had expected that the North Korean soldiers would be sent to Russia’s Kursk border region, where a 3-month-old incursion by the Ukrainian army is the first occupation of Russian territory since World War II and has embarrassed the Kremlin.

U.S., South Korean and Ukrainian intelligence assessments say up to 12,000 North Korean combat troops are being sent by Pyongyang to the war under a pact with Moscow.

The Pentagon said Monday that at least 10,000 North Korean soldiers were in Russia near Ukraine’s border.

More troops from North Korea’s 1.3-million-strong army may be slated for deployment in Russia, according to an analysis published Tuesday by the European Council on Foreign Relations, an international think tank.

The ramifications extend far beyond Europe, it said. “Despite integration challenges — including communication barriers and differing military doctrines — the deployment of North Korean troops to Russia represents a significant shift in European and Asian security relations,” the analysis said. “For the first time in generations, troops from East Asia are actively engaging in a European conflict.”

The North Korean troops, whose fighting quality and battle experience is unknown, are adding to Ukraine’s worsening situation on the battlefield.

Ukrainian defenses, especially in the eastern Donetsk region, are buckling under the strain of Russia’s costly but relentless monthslong onslaught.

Russian advances have recently accelerated, with battlefield gains of up to more than five miles in some parts of Donetsk, the U.K. Defense Ministry said Tuesday on the social platform X.

It said Russia has superior troop numbers, and despite heavy casualties the Kremlin’s recruitment drive is providing enough new troops to keep up the pressure. Russia has held the battlefield initiative in Ukraine for the past year.

Ukrainian officials have long complained that Western military support takes too long to arrive in the country.

In early October, Russian forces drove Ukrainian troops out of Vuhledar, a town perched atop a tactically significant hill in eastern Ukraine.

It was part of a key belt of Ukrainian defenses in the east. Russia’s next targets likely are the key logistics hub of Pokrovsk and the strategically important city of Chasiv Yar.

In the meantime, Russia has kept up its long-range aerial attacks on civilian areas of Ukraine, authorities say.

A Tuesday morning attack on the southern city of Zaporizhzhia killed six people and injured 23 others, regional Gov. Ivan Fedorov said.

The head of Ukraine’s presidential office, Andrii Yermak, said the Russian attacks “must be stopped with strong action.” “A stronger position by (Ukraine’s Western) allies is needed,” he wrote on Telegram.

Arming Israeli civilians with AK pattern rifles is a surefire receipt for friendly fire. Producing a few thousand AR15s is a much better solution and shouldn't be a problem for Israeli industry.

Great video.
Ukrainian UAVs attacked Kaspiysk in Dagestan. It all happened around 6:55 am, locals heard two explosions.

According to residents, the sounds of a propeller and machine gun fire were heard in the city, followed by a loud bang. Emergency services are on site. There is an airport 15 km from the site, which has been strengthened with protection against drone attacks.

Western Europe just had a panic attack and probably shit themselves tonight.   Russia and Ukraine realize they have only a couple months left to set their own destinies until the wild card enters the equation.  Iran is royally fucked, between Trump getting in and Bibi’s moves today they know their future is bleak. Good chance Israel and Saudi Arabia normalize relations.  China needs to make a move extremely soon or put off their plans of expansion another 4 years.

The whole equation has now changed. Next couple months will be wild and unpredictable.  We can all discuss what Trump might do but we don’t know and neither do our enemies.

Congratulations to @realDonaldTrump on his impressive election victory!

I recall our great meeting with President Trump back in September, when we discussed in detail the Ukraine-U.S. strategic partnership, the Victory Plan, and ways to put an end to Russian aggression against Ukraine.

I appreciate President Trump’s commitment to the “peace through strength” approach in global affairs. This is exactly the principle that can practically bring just peace in Ukraine closer. I am hopeful that we will put it into action together.

We look forward to an era of a strong United States of America under President Trump’s decisive leadership. We rely on continued strong bipartisan support for Ukraine in the United States.

We are interested in developing mutually beneficial political and economic cooperation that will benefit both of our nations. Ukraine, as one of Europe's strongest military powers, is committed to ensuring long-term peace and security in Europe and the Transatlantic community with the support of our allies.

I am looking forward to personally congratulating President Trump and discussing ways to strengthen Ukraine's strategic partnership with the United States.

Daily Ukraine map thread for Tuesday 5th November 2024

Highlights: More footage of the Russian mechanized assault towards Siversk emerged - veritable destruction derby near Vyimka and Ivano-Darivka, though Russian forces have once again entered Ivano-Darivka.

More footage of mechanized assaults towards Kurakhove emerged too, showing more vehicular destruction in that direction too. Extremely strong defense from the brigades in that area, which makes it frustrating to see their flanks being eroded by much weaker Russian attacks as other units flee.

Russian flag raise in Vovchenka, as well as small advances near Kruhlyakivka, and NW of Selydove to Hryhorivka

Odd thing to say.

Peskov said it was impossible to end the Ukrainian conflict overnight

MOSCOW, Nov 6 - RIA Novosti
. It is impossible to end the Ukrainian conflict overnight, but the United States can help speed up its end, said the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov.

"We have repeatedly said that the United States of America is able to contribute to the end of the conflict on the Ukraine. This, of course, cannot be done overnight," he told reporters.
Donald Trump, despite the expectation of a long and intense struggle, it is already about two o'clock in the morning Washington (10.00 Moscow time) was declared the winner of the US presidential election: according to a number of leading news resources predicting the results, he won in all key states. After that, Trump spoke to supporters of the Florida and announced his victory.

which we will, of course, reject.

Donald will throw up his hands and, in his usual manner, announce an unprecedented aid package for the Zelensky regime and the lifting of all restrictions on missiles.

This will not change anything either. But it will delay the settlement process.

Dmitry Medvedev has walked back his comments from a few days ago, now suggesting that Trump is a businessman who doesn’t like wasting money, i.e. on Ukraine.

However, many others believe there’s not much difference between Democrats and Republicans. Both sides, they argue, are invested in Russia’s defeat—the only question is the approach they’ll take to achieve it.

Key rate lifting to 22% might lead to growing volatility — Bank of Russia

The Board of Directors of the Bank of Russia made the decision at the meeting in October to increase the key rate by 200 basis points to record high 21% per annum, noting that inflation evolves much higher than the July forecast of the Central Bank and inflation expectations of households are at their highest since the year start

MOSCOW, October 6. /TASS/. A dramatic increase of the key rate by 300 basis points at once (from 19% to 22% per annum) might lead to rising volatility in financial markets, the Bank of Russia said in the summary of key rate discussions.

"Participants in the discussion suggesting the increase by 300 basis points said that it would make possible to lower inflation quicker and provide insurance for the case of materialization of new pro-inflationary risks that remain high. It will also help to lower inflation expectations with greater confidence. However, the majority of discussion participants agree that the dramatic rate change may lead to growing volatility in financial markets. Therefore, choosing the step increment requires to exercise great caution," the regulator informed.

⚡️🎥GUR drones hit enemy ships in the Caspian Sea for the first time, - sources

As sources in the special services reported to RBC-Ukraine, as a result of an innovative special operation, it was possible to damage the Russian flotilla in the Caspian Sea. The distance from the state border of Ukraine to the affected object is about 1,500 km.

As a result of the morning attack, at least two objects in the city of Kaspiysk, in the Republic of Dagestan, Russian Federation, were damaged. In particular, we are talking about the probable missile ships "Tatarstan" and "Dagestan", also the small missile ships of project 21631 were allegedly damaged.

Forsaking our allies is a fool's errand when Russia is on the march. Our European partners increasing their contribution is a good thing, threatening to abandon them is not.

Agreed.

Poland and Ukraine are going to be the new European Superpowers over the next 10+ years, and we damn sure need to ally them.

From the article: '...planning to reintroduce...will be debated...early next year...'  That's moving way to slow.

And this is in their self-interest, it doesn't help Ukraine now.

Russia is going to try to grab as much as they can as he will likely tell them to freeze the lines….or else.

Germany doesn’t care about Ukraine.  I’m just glad they are recognizing they need to do more to protect themselves. It’s a small step in the right direction.

It’s a shame that Europe needs this stimulus in order to take its own responsibilities more seriously.

I want the US to do more to make sure UKR gets 100% of its country back.

That said, our European partners have been very disappointing and have earned whatever comes their way.

They forsook themselves (with the exception of the few Baltics and former Warsaw Pact members). We'll see if the actual contributions materializes compared to their "pledges."
