Looking at the other view am wondering if the center might be a point of failure.

ETA:  I suppose not. If it does get damaged then more water will be coming out of it essentially plug the hole to the exhaust plume.

Anyone else noticing the sudden, ah, deluge of news articles complaining that SpaceX doesn't have wastewater discharge licensing for the water system?

The bias against the company in legacy media is so obvious it's scary.

Noticed that on X the other day.  I’m like 1) explain what contaminants were worried about?  Worried the desolate salt marsh might get a little less salty?

2) exactly how much of that water will survive a launch?

We had a conversation about this awhile ago in this thread. Originally they planned to build a desalination plant as part of the facility. But the environmental impact of that and a few other things was deemed too high.

Personally I want to see a gift shop at that facility where you can buy quality branded timepieces, model rockets and salt shakers that look like little Starships filled with salt made from that aforementioned desalinated water.

Watched a couple of the usual SpaceX utube channels the other day (Great SpaceX maybe) and one said FAA is not approving a launch until they finish their study or analysis of the SpaceX report on first SuperHeavy launch and crash.

Rumor or true?

What will the FAA do?  SpaceX has surely identified corrective actions.

Failures are to be expected.  It may take dozens of flights to approach being a reliable launch system....if they ever use a proper flame trench.

They built a 2 part concrete catch basin to the side of the tower towards the marsh. The large pool is for water runoff and the smaller section is evidently for excess liquid oxygen that I guess will just boil off.

They've already been approved for multiple launches this year. I can't imagine the FAA not expecting a worse possible outcome. I say BS.

Found this recent article, but it's about the water deluge system permit, not FAA.

https://www.cnbc.com/2023/07/28/spacex-is-testing-a-flame-deflector-for-starship-without-permits.html

n an email to CNBC, a spokesperson for the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), the state’s environmental regulator, confirmed that as of July 28, SpaceX had not applied for what is called a Texas Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (TPDES) permit at its Starbase facility. The regulator said the SpaceX site has previously attained three stormwater permit authorizations.

“The determination of whether a discharge permit is needed is the responsibility of the business owner based on how they plan to manage wastewater,” the TCEQ wrote in an email to CNBC. The state agency has been in discussions with SpaceX about industrial permitting, the regulator added.

SpaceX hasn’t said why it went ahead without a permit and didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Also, some lawfare dicks are trying to sue the FAA to get them to stop the launches.

The incident also spurred a lawsuit against the FAA over environmental impacts because the agency had authorized SpaceX to conduct the tests and launches in Texas without a more extensive environmental assessment.

Jared Margolis, senior attorney with the Center for Biological Diversity and lead counsel in this suit against the FAA, told CNBC before the Friday test that running it without a permit is “very concerning.”

“We don’t know if there is any mechanism in place to make sure runoff is not reaching surrounding habitat,” he said. “They are clearly making changes to the launch site, and how they do their launches. There’s been no transparency on that, and no way for the public to see what those changes are or offer comment on them as the National Environment Policy Act requires.”

The FAA said in an email on Friday that “the SpaceX launch site in Boca Chica is not licensed by the FAA,” though a vehicle operators’ license from the agency for SpaceX remains in effect.

What is the speculation on how long it'll take B9 to have the hot stage ring and mods added (assuming the test hot stage rig actually passes testing)?

Probably not long. There's a video (WAI, I think) where they mounted the hot-stage ring on the test can. It uses the same mounting points and clamps that the ship uses to attach to the booster, and has the same on top.

So, it's basically a big adapter. Clamp to top of booster, clamp ship to top of hot-stage ring.

B9 may not need any mods since SpaceX is not looking to recover it?

They aren't going to recover it at the pad, but may attempt a booster soft landing in the ocean. Either way, hot staging would risk damaging starship at separation without a way to vent away its ignition gases.
I would be really surprised if space x passes on an opportunity to get real world hot staging data by not modding B9 before its flight.
