I'm not surprised.   Been to Ramstein AFB Air Base lately?  There are foreign assets monitoring and tracking our air traffic.

Lol.....true, but I don't care.....AFBs are AFBs  it was quicker to acronym.....sue me.  The point may have been lost. Have you ever even been to Ramstein?  It's creepy who sits outside the base openly observing and reporting.

Tail numbers make it easier to track losses.  Russia shut down all their amateur aviation websites for that reason.

I used to collect a little bit of early USSteel memorabilia.  I worked at one of the mills near Pittsburgh, and it was built in 1938.
I got a Pittsburgh newspaper front page from the day it opened and one of the front page stories was about the ground breaking.
This is 1938 - the article said the mill was being built for the "war effort".   So they knew it was coming

Definitely.

The US may have had a sense that they would eventually be forced to join. In 1938 it wasnt a forgone conclusion we WOULD be fighting. Japan had kicked things off in China in 37, Germany had annexed Austria in 38. Wasnt hard for anyone with a brain to see the clouds of war forming. You dont have a defeated Imperial Germany elect a totalitarian to power, and completly violate every end of WW1 treaty and NOT expect the self declared 3rd Reich to start some shit.

I do think it's fascinating that Pearl Harbor essentially was one giant steroid for our defense industry. Not just in production capacity, but just how rapidly EVERY facet of military technology got cranked to 11.

You can't see the markings from a photo taken at twilight.

Probably some unit went too far with crew chiefs and nose art, and a high-level unit command chief master sergeant flipped out and directed that all markings be removed from aircraft, and his commander went along with it because it was easier than arguing with an over-inflated lunatic whose office is adjacent.

At least that’s how markings get removed from ground tactical vehicles.

There might be something the bad guys could learn from knowing WHICH particular C-5 is coming and going somewhere, but it seems kind of left field to me.

You could make the number of AC deployed to a particular location less obvious, but gee, somebody can just count them on the line with a pair of binos anyway.

I'd think if you wanted to confuse them, paint a different tail number on every night. Then they'd think we have 87 C-5s instead of 12 maybe.

I'm going with Biden appointed woke AF general doesn't want to trigger anyone reading UNITED STATES AIR FORCE and then them having to use a safe space chit to go and get a group hug.

Not even close. The current Air Mobility Command CO, Gen. Mike Minihan said last year that war with China is coming sooner than we expect, and that his airmen should prepare by emptying magazines at the heads of their targets. He also said "When you can kill your enemy, every part of your life is better. Your food tastes better. Your marriage is stronger."
Sounds to me like we need more like that.

They are not stripping the jets of all markings.

they are just removing the large markings and tail flashes according to the article..

Even fighters have markings, they just aren't huge.

Our jets are transitioning from full tail and ventral paint (squadron bird) to naked gray and no tail flash.

It isn’t all at once but as needed paint jobs being done full subdued.

To be honest, the US and UK had been wargaming a Pacific conflict with Japan as the adversary for at least a decade prior to December 1941. We were still happy to sell them their steel and oil that whole time, of course

I have some photos somewhere of my squadron’s helicopters with no markings what so ever. It was an overt combat situation.  It is not that unusual.  Everyone knew who the fighter jets flying over watch and the B-52 above them belonged to.  Later on they spray painted limited black marking on top of the flat dark green paint.  You had to get real close to the aircraft to see the identification markings.

The job of the Military is always to expect war.   Prior to Pearl Harbor, We were certain the Japs were going to attack.  We were reading their mail.

The more off-the wall the news gets, the more realistic I realize most people I know are.  Which is good.  And encourages people to look beyond the headlines.

When I worked close to love field in Dallas, we'd fairly frequently see some P-3 orions that would depart and land.  They had pretty much Zero markings.   They were apparently involved in Sensor Testing.  I think they've all gone to P-P-8's now, but i havent seen one of them take off or land yet.
