Texas. It's like a whole other country full of different climates to choose from. South Carolina is a buggy swamp.

In Texas you.have a 50-50 chance of meeting some nice folks, or Mexicans.
SC has some of the nicest people I have met. SC |

Texan here for 65 years. We spent, on purpose, two weeks a couple of years ago while on a trip. We enjoyed the trip but I found SC to be a bit "confining" visually. Other than the ocean there are no "vistas'. We also found that finding address was a bit of a challenge since all of the signage for stores etc. seemed to be "hidden" I suppose by regulation. No big deal but we had to do many u-turns. Charleston was our focus but we did many day trips to different areas. Pretty good food and we did find some quite fresh seafood at a local market. We never inquired about taxes and other costs but in the end it will be our last time in SC.

I'm a native born Texan, (left when I was a kid) but spent a ton of time in SC when I was stationed at Fort Bragg.. and will either be moving to Texas or SC as my long term home. I'm torn as to where to go though. Which is best? Texas gun laws vs SC gun laws Texas bbq vs SC bbq Texas no state tax vs SC property taxes? both have extremely low gas tax (mostly fed) I'm torn between the two. pole incoming View Quote |

Just go to Texas where the weather changes in an hour and tornados are a threat from late winter through fall. Here in SC we just have to worry about a little ole' Hurricane or two from August to early October.
SC is full - enough. |

Upstate SC all the way. I chose it over Texas. Texas is overrun by illegals. May as well give that shithole back to Mexico now. Kansas City BBQ beats them all but that’s for another thread.

I lived near Camden and in Columbia in the eighties. Spent several months in Dallas prior to that. Much preferred Dallas.

Gun laws seem pretty comparable. BBQ is better in SC (the best BBQ of all, frankly). No income taxes is a bigger deal than no property taxes. I guess I'd take SC, because of their insanely long hunting season.

Dunno.... Born and raised in Columbia SC. I don’t get outside the State much. My vacations are stay-cations but I now live Downtown Columbia and love it. Probably much better places to live though. The only other mainstream place I think is better would be Charleston SC.
BBQ is debatable. But we have some really good BBQ places and some that suck. Texas is probably the same. Football is FOR SURE better in SC then Texas! :) |

Probably can't go wrong in either state. Charleston is great the visit and update SC near Greenville is beautiful. We seriously considered moving there, but the economy is a bit rough.
We ended up in Hill Country in Texas. As you might have noticed, Texas is pretty big so there are a lot options for climate. Gun laws are pretty similar, although guns seem more accepted here in Texas. BBQ is better in Texas. So is the economy. And no state income tax is nice. Property taxes are high, but not nearly as bad a people make them out to be. Our property taxes are only slightly higher here than they were back in Iowa. Cost of living is better in SC. If you are retiring, I would be looking more toward SC. If you still have lots of working life ahead of you, I would seriously consider Texas. |

I've been back and fourth between the two for two decades. Was three years in SC before I figured out what I was seeing run on airport property was deer. Always though it was dogs. Little animals. Atmosphere is changing rapidly here with the 800+ people per week moving in from NY, NJ. They are unfortunately bringing their vote with them. They love higher taxes and as these folks get into politics down here, the property tax rates are starting to exponentially climb to make up for all the free shit they are use to. Currently awesome gun laws and plenty of places to have fun but in the last 4 years the push is on for greater gun control because of reason listed above. Weather is incredible from late Sept to late April. Between May and Sept the place is a moist oven. Hot SC women; few and far between. Definitely keepers if you can find one. I did. Fried food, lots of pork. Seafood is OK. Beaches; anywhere is good with the exception of downtown Myrtle Beach. It is a shit hole. Mountain areas are pretty OK. Midlands; CHS area; Ok to visit but I would never want to live there. Texas: I love Texas. Most of my time has been the hilly country of West TX. Food is awesome. Lots of great looking adventurous women everywhere. Lots of open space to do whatever. BEEF! Good selection of animals for hunting. TX has an attitude similar to WY. |

I've lived in TX most of my life but did live in SC for a couple of years in the 80s.
I'd say it's a coin toss |

Lived is Sc for almost 15 years. It is falling fast. It will be blue in no time. I think both are equal in that sense. Major cities Columbia and Charleston there out weight the rest of the state. And they are only getting bigger. But i love the coast. Moved from coastal SC to coastal GA and love it. Never been to Texas coast. Gotta day SC but these summers are painful

Obviously, depends on where? Lived in SC all my life. I've only been to Texas once. Therefore, I clearly vote SC...however, depends on if your in Greenville, Charleston, Beaufort...OR...Columbia, Orangeburg, Myrtle Beach...you decide.

I lived in SC for 16 years before moving to TX in 2012. I feel I have a good bit of time in both states, so IMO: Slight edge to TX gun laws. SC bbq is mostly mustard based, which I hate. TX bbq is FAR better. Far better SC better on taxes. While TX has no state income tax, they rape you on home property taxes, which are about 10x what I was paying in SC. It pretty much negates any advantage by not have state income tax Gas cost about the same SC beaches are better as in clearer water, even if they are on the Atlantic side. I've been to TX beaches up and down the coast and they all seem - murky. Schools - TX is better. No comparison Job market - TX is light years ahead of SC. Pay-wise too Housing - you can get good value for your dollar in either state Between the two, I feel TX is better overall View Quote |

I've lived in the Myrtle Beach area all my life. Even in the past 5 years, I've noticed a steady increase in population, both tourist and permanent. We're full

Guess it depends where at in each state you’re looking at. I haven’t spent much time in SC, just a drunken week on the way to a deployment at a shitty hotel off base.
My retirement goal is the hill country of West Texas. It’s gorgeous, is rural, has great people and great hunting if you own or lease land, that’s part of the retirement plan. If you’re taking Austin I’d keep my ass where I am. |

Definitely Texas.
Seriously, SC is awful and full. Everybody move to Texas. Especially if you are a yankee looking to relocate, you’ll be much happier in Texas. |

This won’t help you OP, but Texas. The BBQ; pork ribs, brisket and sausage. Also my dad was born and raised here and I have cousins that we hung out together, so the memories are a big part. Plus Texas fought a sovereign country, with help from some Tennessee Volunteers and won it's independents without help from Washington,D.C. so I love it’s pride and history. View Quote EDIT: Almost forgot.... PSA storefronts in every region of the state. |

SC. Better fishing, better BBQ, better people, and it doesn't touch Mexico or Oklahoma.
