My wife and I switch off picking TV series to watch together.  Nothing on TV interests me anymore, so I tried getting away with AvE.

After describing him as "the Australian guy that talks about his dick" she shut it down.  So still being my turn I picked The Sopranos because I like mafia movies and I've never seen any of it before.

So far it's good (we're around episode 7 of season 1).  I like the AK Tonys wife keeps stashed for home invaders.  The psychologist annoys me a lot for some reason.  I am genuinely interested in learning more about the Mafia's decline.  Did they really just start rolling over on each other?  Tougher laws?

Wow.  I do feel a little nostalgic when watching.  I remember it was big when I was in HS.

Jersey here ! It's an awesome show. I just started it and I'm on season 4 right now.

The mob, It just kinda faded out. Watch Goodfellas, read Henry Hill's book. They are still there bit I guess but you don't hear the stories make the rounds anymore.

On a side note, Satin Dolls aka the "Bada Bing" on rt. 17 got shut down a few months ago. The manager had ties to OC and was under investigation for RICO violations. Sign out front says "closed for remodeling" and "opening soon"

One of the three best and shaped the TV movie landscape for the others, particularly The Wire. See also the shorter True Detective, first release.

I always felt that “The Sopranos “ was a show that was less than the sum of its parts.

Some good writing and fantastic acting, but waaayyy too many episodes where nothing happens.

More than once, they’d say, “Stayed tuned for scenes from next week’s season finale...” and I’d think to myself,

The season’s over? But nothing happened!

I go back and watch episodes here and there, but I’d never sit and watch the entire run again.

Some parts get pretty dull.   Like I said in the original post, the shrink annoys me a lot.  I find myself playing on my phone during Tonys sessions.

Ending makes perfect sense if you remember what was said earlier in the last season...."At the end, you probably don’t hear anything, everything just goes black."

Lot's of good mafia docs on youtube. Sammy the bull Gravano and John Gotti, along with RICO, killed the mafia. They're still around, but nothing like the good old days. I like the romanticized mafia idea too, but the reality was a lot more banal then the movies. Crime is always the suck.

If I recall correctly she does show some boobies once
and

"Don't Stop Believin'" is played throughout the final scene of the series. Journey's lead singer Steve Perry initially refused to let David Chase use the song until he knew the fate of the leading characters and did not give final approval until three days before the episode aired. Perry feared that the song would be remembered as the soundtrack to Tony's demise until Chase assured him that would not be the case.[16] Immediately following the airing of "Made in America," the song enjoyed a great surge of popularity; its sales on iTunes, for example, grew 482 percent.[17] The newly growing attention to the band helped it climb out of the reportedly difficult times it was having at the time.[18]

OP, keep in mind. The show was never just a crime drama. It was really a dark comedy. The gangster's worldview. The stupid decisions. The rationales. And it really makes fun of the typical NJ Italians idea of style and taste. Tony shopping at Fountain's of Wayne was great. Paulie explaining snakes. All of their relationships with their mothers.......

Now I feel like binge watching the whole thing. Great series.

Occasionally I go to youtube and watch that video of all the times they said *Ohh!*  I think it's called The Sopran-OHs or something like that.

Plus, I'm a big fan of Adriana/Drea de Matteo.

It peaks in Season 4. After watching it air on HBO for 6 seasons, I bought seasons 1 - 5. Season 6 isn't worth watching twice. They should have wrapped it up in Season 5.

I knew the ending, more or less from all the talk surrounding it when it aired. I went ahead and watched the ending on youtube. I was very upset that I did. Then I watched the youtube vids about the ending and realized it ended the only way it was gonna end.

I'm going to break with the hive here. It was a great ending. Don't watch ahead..... Just look for the clues.

OP, watch it right thru. Don't cheat on the ending. The Sopranos was one of the best things ever on TV.

band of brothers was better.

rome was good to.

sopranos was good, sorta like a soap opera for men about made guys.

deadwood i miss greatly.

when got is done, the writers should do aberchrombie's shattered seas series, one book per season, it would be a slam dunk.. its perfect for the hbo format.

eta .. 'the night of' was also a good short series.
