If you know anything about the group you truly understand there are really too many to choose from. The guitar work from the early 60’s to the present, like everything else has evolved.
The sheer talent involved in creating a song such as Gimme Shelter back in 1969, the performance let alone the production of such a piece is nothing short of genius. Most who dislike the Stones, dislike the caricature created by pop culture; the talent is undeniable, all you have to do is listen. The Last Time Satisfaction She’s A Rainbow Slave Hot Stuff Monkey Man Star Star(listen to the lyrics) Can’t You Hear Me Knocking Gimme Shelter Jumping Jack Flash Street Fighting Man Sympathy For The Devil….. |

Not the best, but my favorite

Gimme Shelter. Not just because it's better but because its so relevant to the culture and times, whereas PIB is a personal song.
I think Undercover of the Night is similar in that vein to GS but it's underrated |

I like the songs that hardly ever get played on the radio, Midnight Rambler.

Sympathy for the Devil - Live
Gimme Shelter- Live Memory Motel Wild Horses |

Made my pick before clicking thread, same choice. Well done OP.

The Stones get way better when they added more musicians like back up singers etc. The one thing they did not have was a guitar solo. Same as the Beatles. If you wanted to hear an awesome kick ass solo like from Black Sabbath etc.. the Stones sucked. I'll say they were more down and dirty than the Beatles but nowhere near a metal band.

I don't want to post what's already been listed, so I'll go with:
Sway (2009 Mix) I like the whole album. |

Either Gimme Shelter or Sympathy for the Devil.
Both are lyrically rich, along with being great blues influenced tunes. I also consider "Let it Bleed" to be their best album. |

Quoted: A lot of us chose the more unusual Stones songs, one-offs. For me, the three best are songs that define The Rolling Stones. Honky Tonk Women- one of the greatest singles ever. Great riffs, great guitar fills, showcasing the two great guitarists. Also, the horns are prominent, and the black girls singing backup became part of their sound for 50 more years. The lyrics about sex. Brown Sugar- Great riff, horn section, sax solo, lyrics about raping slave girls. Jumpin Jack Flash-great riff, great lyrics View Quote For riffs, I'd add; Tumbling dice but it's so layered in the mix it's hard to hear except on an isolated guitar track. Also, She's my little rocknroll. |

Sympathy and Gimme Shelter are going to duke it out, but there are so many others...
Midnight Rambler Jumpin' Jack Flash Mother's Little Helper You Can't Always Get What You Want and Angie...always loved that song. I remember I was sitting on the living room floor when the It's Only Rock n' Roll video made it's television debut, years before MTV. I thought it was nuts, the 'rents were not impressed. It seems like Stones fans are pretty evenly divided between Paint It Black and Sympathy For The Devil as their favorite. I’m in the PIB group.

In no particular order, Sympathy for the Devil, Satisfaction, and Gimme Shelter are my preferences to Paint it Black.

Quoted: He's saying in The Beatles had a sitar in a song, The Rolling Stones had to have a sitar in their song. He's not wrong to say the big bands of that era thought they had to keep up with each other and be edgier. The Beach Boys "Pet Sounds" album was made to make themselves edgier and more groundbreaking than The Beatles. These huge bands were in competition with each other artistically all through this era. Those bands back then all went through phases. If you read any books about the English bands of the 60's those guys all knew each other. Musicians jumped around a lot. They worked as session men. They hung out together. One band embrace some Eastern philosophy and traveled to India. They came back and talked about how great it was. Next thing you know everybody was going there. All the English bands of the 70s/80s all went to Jamaica. That is why there a reggae background to a lot of that music. I like this version the best: https://vimeo.com/469600114 Much better tempo IMO. As for the original question - The Stones have too many great songs to pick just one. |
