Id love a resident geologists take on the composition of that cliff face. looks somewhat sedimentary with the horizontal striations. and looking at the recent scree pile nothing looks solid enough for me to sleep there.

My guess is that the local government decided it was easier to let an 82 year old kill himself rather than get in a legal fight with an MD over his right to kill himself.

It's less stable than sandstone. More of a powder. Some will concrete the cliff, drape tarps in the winter or plant ice plant. A couple years ago, a chunk calved off and killed some sunbathers below.

As it should be. If he was to sell the place there should be huge blinking red lights attached to the paperwork by the state IMO just so everyone is aware though.

Was visiting my mom over New Years and my daughter came with me. We went and walked right below the homes that are pictured and further up.

Grew up in area use to go to beach right up from there often to surf.

Another thing. When that house was built there was probably a hundred yards of clearance from the cliff. I know of one main life guard tower at a state beach in North San Diego County that was red flagged, torn down and rebuilt back on solid ground. It had been there since the 60s. The cliff where it was sitting is long gone. Same type of "soil".

I have a beach house (studio apartment) in the area but not on a cliff. I do have a tsunami warning sign on the street though.

And, I cannot stress this enough: buy it a few decades ago before land and home prices went bananas.

The family member I wrenched on vintage race cars for many years ago owns a place on Via Del Monte. They purchased it in the early 70's. A year or so later they purchased the empty lot next door. They are one of the only homes with that much land in the town. The house interior still screams 1950's....

I'm almost afraid to ask them what it's worth now. Even in the early 90's when I was there it was way out of my range...

Even if I ignore the recent mass wasting, I'm looking at all the open fractures, rills, and gullies along the rest of that cliff face and thinking, "Yeah, no dawg".  There's no question of "if", just "when".

@Blue_Monkey

I can only presume he bought the property 50 years ago and that it’s appreciated a lot.  Even at 82, there is no way he bought that on a radiologist’s income, though they can make quite a bit of money relative to other docs.

@StevenH

Exactly.  The city continues getting property taxes and if it goes into the ocean, they aren’t going to be blamed for it.
