I see both sides.
We're fucked as a society because everyone is overweight. But it's hard to get overweight people in the gyms because they're self conscious and think everyone will tease them. Or snicker as they get hiked past on a trail. So I get while companies do this. 1, they're trying to get fat people to buy their products "See, here is pictures of you or people that look like you wearing our stuff. It's okay to buy it!" and 2, it might get fatties on the trails losing weight. Again, this is just basic economics. Thin people are going to wear their shit. They don't need to see thin bodied models wearing exercise gear. Thin athletic people are what you see on 99% of social media and in fitness ads. Merrell is just doing what a business should be doing, selling to a broader audience, the types that aren't buying your stuff. It's not like some thin outdoorsy type is going to see this ad and be like "I'm not buying this clothing because I'm seeing fat people modeling it." Likely the only people that will get butthurt are the fat types that are mad at the world and don't even exercise and looking for things to get pissed off about as they stuff their faces with more fries. Athletic people are actually out doing stuff in the real world and not wasting their time getting mad at online ads. |

Merrell’s hurt my feet. They hold the record as the only shoes I’ve ever had to put insoles in - twice. I’ve got some $20 wal-mart boots that I got on the way to the range that hurt less.
As for their ad campaign, she could be “hiking” some nice flat forest for a half mile and then celebrating with pizza, two pitchers of beer, and an ice cream topped brownie. |
