Please say a prayer for these sailors!

On the evening of January 11, two U.S. Navy Sailors were reported missing at sea while conducting operations off the coast of Somalia. Search and rescue operations are currently ongoing to locate the two sailors. For operational security purposes, we will not release additional information until the personnel recovery operation is complete.
Out of respect for the families affected, we will not release further information on the missing personnel at this time.
The sailors were forward-deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet (C5F) area of operations supporting a wide variety of missions.

I guess the wording doesn't rule out aircrew?  It's not quite how they typically release a missing/downed aircraft though?  Maybe not being specific for ongoing CSAR effort? Prayers out for the sailors.

There were rumors that the attacks on the Houthis were a result of them actually hitting a US Navy ship.

All I know is that if it's pirates, an AC130 should be dispatched to do some "investigation".

Wouldn't that be a broad categorization of anyone in the Navy?  I get it, that definitely seems like enlisted guys, but 2 is making it sound like an aircrew.  I don't know, they're obviously leaving a lot out for some reason.

Falling off a ship and not being found was one of my biggest fears.

Ships are big.

People are small.

The ocean is also big.

The propaganda coup from
Capturing a sailor would be insane.

If so, that's not something that can be hidden for too terribly long. Damage significant enough to leave two MIA overboard is going to be very obvious the next time that ship makes port.

Two SEAL Team Members Missing After Incident Off Somalia Coast
The sailors were said to have disappeared into the water after a vessel boarding attempt. Pentagon officials said the episode was not related to recent clashes with the Houthi militia in Yemen.

Two members of the Navy SEALs remained missing on Saturday after a mishap two days ago while they were attempting to board a ship off the coast of Somalia, two current and two former Pentagon officials said.

The incident comes as the United States is stepping up actions against Iranian-backed Houthi fighters in Yemen, intent on curbing their attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea. As part of those missions, the U.S. Navy and allies have been responding to distress calls.

Over the past two days, the U.S. and allies have struck Houthi-linked targets in Yemen, trying to damage the militia’s offensive capabilities.

In the latest incident, the members of the SEAL team were dispatched on Thursday to approach a suspicious vessel off the Somali coast, the officials said. It was unclear on Saturday what prompted the commandos to single out the vessel for a closer investigation.

In recent weeks, the Houthi militia and Somali-based pirates have threatened or seized ships in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden and off the Somali coast. The Houthis say they are acting in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, who have been under siege by the Israeli military following Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack on Israel. Pentagon officials said on Saturday that the circumstances surrounding this incident were different from those involving the Houthis or pirates. But they declined to disclose further details.

As two members of the SEAL team tried to board the vessel Thursday night in rough seas, one of the commandos apparently slipped off the boarding ladder, according to one current and one former Pentagon official briefed on the incident. Another member of the team then jumped into the water to try to rescue the sailor, the officials said. Both soon disappeared in the swells.

The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss operational matters.

Navy ships and aircraft were immediately dispatched to the scene, where search and recovery efforts have been underway, the officials said. The military’s Central Command noted the rescue operations in a statement on Friday, but made no mention of the sailors being members of a SEAL team or any details of the incident.

Military officials have started the process of notifying the families of the commandos involved in the episode, a former official said.

Wonder if it happened like how one of DJ Shipley's Team's missions went.

Whole thing went FUBAR in Africa and had to haul ass in to the ocean and get picked up.

At least I think thats what I remember from his Shawn Ryan interview story.

According to U.S. Defense Officials, the 2 Navy SEALs attached to the USS Lewis B. Puller (ESB-3) who fell Overboard from a Small Special Operations Boat while Raiding a Fishing Vessel in 8ft Swells off the Coast of Somalia on Thursday were Searching for Illegal Weapons Parts for Iranian Ballistic Missiles including Warheads, which due to recent Intelligence is now believed to have started being provided to Somalian Piracy Groups by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the Houthi Terrorist Group in Western Yemen; the Weapons Part aboard the Ship were Confiscated and the Boat was Sunk while the 12 Crewmembers, who had No Paperwork, were taken into Custody.

IMO we shouldn't be risking the lives of our dudes on that kind of shit.

Just fly a drone over the boat. If it looks suspicious, blow it up. Don't bother trying to rescue the crew.

I don’t know that I’d take it beyond face value.  No reason for Iranians to scuttle the ship.  Their repercussions, or the lack thereof, don’t change either way.

Iran has been running military supplies to Yemen/Houthis via fishing boats.

US Navy previously seized 50 tons of supplies on this fishing boat.

Another report stated that one SEAL fell overboard while trying to board, and the other SEAL jumped in after him. I think they used the term “following protocol” about the second SEAL jumping in after him.

People falling in on a boarding and never coming back up is a thing. The USCG lost a boarding team member in 2010 or 11 when I was in Virginia.

Two Navy Seals were lost in a successful effort to find those Iranian missile warheads.  Their families deserve to know why they made this sacrifice.
