So is that a fuel inlet or a pitot tube?

Same that it ugly-ies up the aircraft so much.

Refueling probe.
Because the French weren't smart enough to design an internal one like the US, Britain or Russia

Arabs have always been about show...they like the latest toys and are rich enough to buy whatever they want, but lack the ability or desire to use all the features effectively. It's like selling Ferraris to 9 year-olds.

France has a pretty robust domestic military industry.
They produce tanks, fighters, and small arms. Hell they even have a carrier.

However, the Eurofighter is much sexier.

I don't understand the logic behind the Rafale purchase with the UAE already having the most modern version of the F-16, and the F-35 waiting in the wings.

Probably related to some other business deal and/or they don't trust the US.

Or they are just being Arabs.

They have bought French armament since the 80s. They had Mirage fighters they didn’t fly during GW1 because so did the Iraqis.

Their aircraft shelters are also French made.

Considering the buyer, minimizing moving parts was probably more important than aerodynamics.

So they don't get screwed over by one country or another.  If we decide to play games with them they still have their French suppliers

Probe and drogue works just fine. Refueling receptacle adds weight, complexity takes up valuable airframe space and you can refuel only one fighter at a time.

Since 330MRTT monstrosity and KC46 have drogues its a non issue for them.

Because the foggies are pissed at us for the Australian deal. So, any Foreign sales that is up for grabs they are going to make deals.

UAE is not happy with us for a number of reasons on the defense side. I'm sure that displeasure affected this purchase decision. We're seeing a general trend of Middle East countries looking to deepen both purchase and training relationships with other US countries both as a hedge against further US withdrawal and as a tool of leverage to prevent that withdrawal.

It's a Middle Eastern Military Fashion Show. Hopefully, these nations stay friendly to the West and don't fall to an internal coup and turn into the next generation Iran.

The article sucks.
UAE ditched the US F-35 and drone buy over the Huawei (HWT.UL) 5G technology bullshit.

https://www.cnn.com/2021/12/14/middleeast/uae-weapons-deal-washington-china-intl/index.html
The United Arab Emirates has suspended a multi-billion dollar deal to buy US-made F-35 fighter jets, in a sign of Abu Dhabi's growing frustration with Washington's attempts to limit Chinese technology sales to the oil-rich Gulf state.
"The UAE has informed the US that it will suspend discussions to acquire the F-35," an Emirati official told CNN. "Technical requirements, sovereign operational restrictions, and cost/benefit analysis led to the re-assessment."

Yea, no.
You can't proprietary wrenches and screwdrivers and hammers.

All Military aircraft have specialized IMRL (Individual Material Readiness List) Support Equipment.
They have specialized tools (The Super Hornet has a special "wrench" to remove the MLG wheel nut).
The fasteners that held the panels on the EA-6B were different than the fasteners on the Growler.
And they are different than the fasteners on an H-60.

1. Create odd toolform that didn't previously exist, make all your fasteners use it, and patent/copyright it so no other commercial entity can produce that toolform.
2. ....
3. Profit!

One either pays the King's tax or one uses a lot of one-off welding when one services said system. Have you ever seen the "security bit" fasteners used on cable boxes and such?
