I'd choose aluminum bats for more range and durability. Still quick and easy to swing. No stupid nails or barbed wire attachment that's going to catch or snag into something and get you killed.

Pretty much anything that comes up on a search for "tire thumper" or "fish bat."
ETA it's legal to carry a tire thumper or fish bat in California, but not a billy club. It's also legal to carry a long-handled leather coin purse, but not a sap. It's also perfectly legal to carry a sheathed machete or sword. |
