The Soviets figured that the T72 was heavily armored enough that its peers could not penetrate the armor from the front, and the advantages of the autoloader were worth the trade off to crew safety. That all changed for the worse when the T72 was capable of being penetrated by our next generation of MBTs. The T64 was the more complicated and advanced precursor to the T72 and so the T72 interited the same problem because it used the T64 style autoloader. You can easily google how many T64s lost their turrets in the Ukrainian war and T72s in the Gulf War I look at it more from the Chieftain and Challenger perspective then the M60 and M1 perspective but either way armor on armor in the 70's/80's the commies would have been fucked long distance in a fulda gap scenario but raw numbers would have carried them forward and IMO it would have gone chemical first then theater nuclear. Hey! My man knows the Fulda Gap (and all it's problems for NATO) Back in the day the FM100 series on Soviet doctrine stated that 25% of their artillery rounds were expected to be chemical  . I used to be the NBC NCO for my platoon, and did a ton of tactics traning and VID training for my platoon and my company. IIRC the prepatory bombardment against a NATO tank company defensive position in the Fulda was 1000 rounds...before any of their tanks even showed up to start shooting Agreed on the distance gunnery advantage the West had over them overall, but our typical engagement range was expected to be short and sweet in Germany...500 fucking yards  On top of that the Sovs really liked the rolling artillery HE+Smoke barrage right in front of their armored spearhead which basically meant you couldn't effectively shoot until the smoke cleared, so whoever was getting the most attention from them during the initial assault was going to have a bad day. I also read we were expected to be outnumbered 14 to 1 in the Fulda Gap...so I mostly didn't want to be there and was glad that my unit would have been part of ReForGer and probably not seen the initial opening shots  Sorry, but it looks like AJ was going to have to hold the line til we got there I was never stationed in one of those areas, however, one of my favorite sergeants was in Korea.
