I used to play WHFB about 25-30 years ago and have a couple of armies still. Meanwhile, a friend bought some 40k stuff for his kids to play with them, so the wife and I poked around a local hobby store today.
Aside from the 9th ed. rulebook, what would we need? Is a combat patrol box and codex enough to play with? I don’t know how many minis we need for a basic game, nor anything about dreadnoughts, vehicles, etc. |

It's a skirmish game based in the 40k universe but the rules are different than big 40k. It's more squad based and has less minis. They just released a new set call Kill Team Into the Dark. If you want big 40k then the combat patrols are a good starting point for an army. |

It's been so long since I've done it that I have to keep reminding myself these aren't display pieces, and it's ok of they aren't perfect. They're gaming peices and they're going to get messed up during play. Vehicles and characters will get special care, but everything else is getting tabletop ready. I'm not entering Golden Daemon or anything. Otherwise nothingwill ever be done. Ihave a 1/16 Sherman that I'vebeen working on for about 6 years now. I keep finding more things to add or correct, and I would like to actually play a game sometime this decade. |

Thanks - I found a big series of articles on wargamer.com that helped me understand the factions better as well as the 9e stuff out so far. I ended up picking up a commanders box for the wife and I to learn with - I debated getting a core book and should have not bothered, as the softback rulebook and mission guide have 90% of the core book chunk (minus some flavor and a lot of the pictures) Everything on Amazon is marked down a bit, and I wa able to get a black templar army box for $107 (vs the $199 launch price and $169 mark-down). Also have a space marine book, chaos marine book + patrol box for the wife, dark angel book + patrol box for me. That should give us enough for some patrol size games with the family and friends who are getting started too. |

View Quote Combat patrol games are about perfect for playing at home with young kids, IME. The longer Strike Force and Incursion games tend to push past the attention span of my kid, and he's trying to learn and try out new stuff, so games go up to 4 hours in some cases. With Combat Patrol, it's a more convenient table size and games are generally 1 hour, give or take 10-15 minutes of distractions. Just keep in mind that unlike Kill Team, playing under 500 points really affects some factions and they won't play very equally. |

The kids just like the miniatures and like rolling dice (they love other mini games like Zombicide and Village Attacks), so the balance issue won't really matter to them. |

A new report has claimed that Superman actor Henry Cavill is in the final stages to star and executive produce a Warhammer 40,0000 TV series for Amazon. Hello fellow Nerds.
So, I have just started the Horus Heresy and I'm just about done with book 4, The Flight of Eisenstein. Holy crap, are there are a massive ton of books to read! They're short (about 500 pages a piece), but WOW what an endeavor. I have to say though, so far, four books in that they have done a real good job of coordinating the lore despite having different authors. |

It’s weird not having exploding 6’s or a second attack with the berzerkers but their doubled amount of attacks means they will get a shitload more attacks in because they won’t die during the counter fight.
I HATE how they changed Kharn though. The Betrayer rule going from wounds on 1’s to just any time a unit is close takes the fun risk out of the dice. |
