Sheriff Teasle was a democratic elected sheriff in Washington state that embezzled funds from the city budget to buy fancy stuff.

He also hated veterans and wanted to stick it to John Rambo because of his veteran status. Maybe he was mad because Rambo got a free dinner for Veterans Day.

Plus Troutman and were Brovets, maybe Teasle hates Brovets?

Teasle was Korea war vet, this was addressed in the novel. Some Korean vets are resentful of the Vietnam vets, for various reasons.

Think those awards are a Purple Heart, Bronze Star(?), and Distinguish Service Cross. Impressive.

Because all Korea got was MASH with that faggy Alan Alda.  Vietnam got Tour of Duty and China Beach with Dana Delany.

All John wanted was something to eat.......that's it.  A couple of greasy hamburgers and he would have been on his way.  But could that prick Teasle let him do that?  Oh fuck no, he had to turn it into some kind of personal afront to his authority and the rule of law.  If Teasle hadn't been such an asshole, we wouldn't even care about his fancy kraut rifle now would we?  The whole fucking thing was avoidable, caused by a cop on a power trip who couldn't let a guy eat in peace.

Jesus Fucking Christ.

True, the MASH movie was worse than the TV show, which was awful, IMO.

My favorite bit of trivia is that some of the full auto M16's and M60's were stolen or uh "went missing" in Canada during the production.

If he was the best, he couldn't hear a kid walking through the woods? Always seemed odd.

Look, it’s a quiet little town. In fact, you might say it’s boring. But I like it that way. And I pay the sheriff to keep it that way.

There’s a diner about 30 miles up the highway.

yeah, OP answered it himself.  Usually the 'special' characters, ie the main hero, the main bad guy, maybe a special henchman, always get different, usually 'bigger/scarier' guns.

I always thought it was interesting that Indiana Jones' revolver was so loud and boomy.  Turns out, those shot sounds are a a lever gun, 30-30, or maybe a 45-70.

Seems logical, probably much the same reason why they gave the character of Vincent Hanna a Mini-14 in Heat. Or why Karl had a G3 in Die Hard.

...Did the director / writers just want him to stand out or differentiate himself from the other sheriff deputies?
That's the most likely reason.  It was pretty common for prop houses to have an assortment of guns for this stuff and they would give standout characters more unique looking guns for greater screen presence.
