Moose and grizzlies require something larger than 9mm or .40 S&W to reliably defend yourself from. Anything else, a 9mm is enough to reliably kill. There was a cop in Zanesville OH who took out a wolf and a black bear with a .40 S&W.

There was a study by some state game wardens group where they found a bunch of bears killed with 9mm. I was surprised that people were killing bears with anything 9mm or larger. I shot a wounded deer once with a 45 "+p+" and one round didn't penetrate a rib. Other rounds did horrible damage to the chest cavity.

edit that moose the guy on the snowmobile killed was shot with a 40. It's in YouTube not saying I want to try it ha ha

So I met up with a relative who's lived in Utah for a decade. He works to be able to mountain bike, ski, raft and camp. He doesn't own a gun as far as I know and it sounds like no one on the trips he goes on carries. He said he's only run across one mountain lion. He said at first he thought it was a deer drinking until it turned around, but it ran off when it saw a bunch of dudes. He said the bears he has seen were in desert areas (probably the only ones he's seen). I said "moose sound like assholes" and he laughed and said they kind of are.
