It stands for Assault Rifle, similar to the AK (Automatic Killer), FAMAS (Full Auto MASsacre), etc

The first Assault Rifle was made for Hitler's school shooter squads of the SS, who needed to operate with speed and silence, or risk getting discovered by Jewish social justice activists. They needed a magazine capacity of 30 rounds, an un-heard-of number at the time, because that is how many students were usually in the classrooms. There were over 60 of these squads by the end of the war. The US only needed a magazine capacity of 8 rounds, because we never shot at civilians in the war. The United States was only forced to adopt an assault weapon to protect US civilians in Vietnam from Russia's murder squads armed with the Automatic Killer 47.

I like the current ArmaLite Inc., which is Eagle Arms acquiring the ArmaLite name from Elisco Tool and Machine from the Philippines. After Fairchild dropped their small arms development firm, Elisco somehow got a hold of the name. ArmaLite used to have this on their website, along with somewhat detailed history of the development/reverse-engineering of KAC's SR25 when David Doerbeck worked with Karl Lewis on the 1996 AR10, not to be confused with the real ArmaLite Fairchild prototype or Dutch AR10s of the 1950s/early 60s, or the Colt AR10A intended production AR10 of 1959 after Colt bought the Stoner gas system and AR10/AR15 patents.

Anyone that claims AR stands for ArmaLite Rifle is then left having to explain the AR17 shotgun, and even the current ArmaLite Inc. AR24 pistol.

Whether discussing the original ArmaLite, or the current ArmaLite, AR does not make sense if you say it stands for ArmaLite Rifle.
