Grilling with charcoal, would like to smoke occasionally.  Just get an old school Weber type and a separate smoker?  The charcoal all in ones with the separate chamber for smoking, or a kamodo style?  What say the hive mind?

Small family, don't need to grill for many.

I really like my Kamado Joe, I will be smoking ribs in it tomorrow. I haven’t had it that long, but once you get the airflow figured out, it holds temp like an oven.

Weber kettle with Killa Grilla heavy duty stainless grill grate.

Char Griller, cast iron grates and is only $109. I let mine sit out year round and after 5-6 years throw it away and buy a new one.

Probably the weber kettle grill or something similar.

Followed closely by the BGE and Traeger...

Weber 18" SMK is a great smoker it just requires some attention to regulate temps unless you add one of the fancy fan units. Works great in warm weather but doesn't hold temp as well as a kamado style cooker but is is much easier to add more smoke wood and charcoal than a kamado style cooker.

In addition to the SMK I went with a Primo kamado style grill and am real happy, it's the only one made in 'Murica.

B.I.L. has been a Big Green Egg owner for years and helped push me into buying a kamado. Lump charcoal lasts a long time and the temp holding ability is incredible I just wish there was an easy way to add more wood and/or fuel during a cook.

Me too once I learned not to try to cook too much at once. Keep a large safe zone, keep it covered or the charcoal will burn hot as hell, use the top vent to control the temp.

Weber kettle- have the performer series which has the side table-weber smokey mountain-both are 22”. I did have a char-griller-the one with the propane/charcoal/smoker all in one-awesome design but their metal is no-go. I did the oil relentlessly and even bought the custom cover. 2years and it rusted out- called them to voice my opinion to see if I got a bad one and they said no- all built the same. Went to weber going on 5 years and still looks and performs like new.

Mines 15 years old.

I’ve gone through a couple of covers for it.

Recently replaced the charcoal grate.

Have spare grill grates. But no need so far.

I like weber kettles for grilling, but i’m not a fan for smoking.  You could pair one with the smokey mountain.  A kamado like the bge, kamado joe, or primo could do both but sometimes its nice to be able to grill while you smoke.  I’d also start to look at higher end pellets

Just did a couple of large roasts and held steady at 225 for 4 hrs with no problems.

I wanted to buy a hibachi, but couldn't find one after checking 3 stores. I did find this system which seems it will work. But I wanted a simple hibachi that would work with lump charcoal.

That looks pretty good. And not bad price-wise.
I've got an old Brinkman professional that's on it's last legs.
And since Brinkman has been tits up since 2015, parts are getting really scarce.

Weber kettle for grilling. Used to use it for smoking as well - it does a pretty good job as a smoker with careful charcoal arrangement and vent control. However we upgraded to a Weber Smokey Mountain last year for more capacity, plus it is easier to control temperatures in.

Take a look at the Weber Jumbo Joe too. Just picked one up on sale at Target. $43.00. Works great. It’s my go to for small/ medium
Cooks. You can’t go wrong with a Weber Kettle  either. (Under $100 for the base model.)

Weber one touch silver for grilling.

Add a smokenator, hinged grate, and a maverick and you’ve got a kick ass smoker.

Add a cyber q (or some type of automated blower temp management system) and you’ve got a smoker that’s only slightly more hands on than electric.

I use this:
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Aussie-Walk-A-Bout-Charcoal-Grill-with-Table/135468146

I can take the cast iron grill off my Akorn smoker and use it on there it for grilling steaks.. The Aussie grill has handled ten years of SERIOUS abuse. II'm talking piling up charcoal until it is touching the grill. It's kinda starting to burn up now. For $50, I'll just buy another one.
