Porsche GT3 that’s a couple years old.
Should appreciate well in the next 10yrs

The market went stupid this year and puts most of the cars mentioned well out of budget, or simply unobtainable.

911 for sure.  But a Nissan GTR or a Mercedes AMG GT would be alternates.  A M5 comp is up there too.

Lots of Arfcommers don't know what a sports car is.   (Hint: Muscle cars are not sports cars.)

I'll take an Alfa Romeo 4C.  Small two seater, nimble, with a carbon fiber monocoque.  What is not to like?

Edit: It (no shit) weighs 2487 lbs.

There’s always one.

OP’s standard was pretty broad.

In the OP's range, and available,, I'm going with a R8 V10 or a GT-R Black Edition. R8 is the first choice.   I think it has a design that has aged well and will continue to be a looker.

All you guys suggesting vettes and M5's and what not.at the OP's price point, I want a car that will lose as little value as possible, and maybe even appreciate. With that said, OP could also import some Japanese legends, EVO 5, GC8 WRX, etc and probably have a cooler car with more car show wow factor than most of the listed rides (that he could actually touch with today's $150k). Plus they're more driver focused all manual, no electrical nanny cars. Shame the CLK63 Black Series have shot up recently. It was only a matter of time though. He's not touching a 911 Turbo or GT car for under 175 at this point. And the new Vette looks like a bag of smashed dicks.

If I had 150K to spend, I'd probably be buying a Miata and a big chunk of property in the backwoods of WV to build my compound.

But, if I had to play by the rules, I'd probably go this route and get something old that had been restored or have something restored.

Need to back it up, and figure out what you can afford in maintenance cost yearly to begin with, then let that figure in to what you can afford.

Hell, see it all the time in the Vet world, where lads will come up with a budget for maybe the car, maybe what is going to cost to insure it yearly, but miss the mark so badly on the yearly maintenance cost per year, own it less than a year before they have to sell it since they can not afford the yearly maintenance costs.

Hence take any engine that is running a rubber timing belt that needs to changed around the 4 year mark, and since most of these require the engine to be dropped to get to the belt, $6-10K range.
R8 oil change, with the amount of panels and oil plugs on the car/time is does take to do an oil change, your looking at $1K to have it oil changed yearly at the dealer.
Any newer  Ferrari, Lambo, and the rest, they run spherical bushings for the suspension (not rubber) that needs to be changed yearly at the service as well, which will be in the $4K range.

As for new car's, really need to take a look at what is not going to be covered, since items like Brake/rotors, tires/bent rim, clutch's can get in the thousands each if they need to be replaced that are not covered under warrenty.

Bottom line, its not the amount that the car is going to cost you to begin with, but the cost of insurance and maintenance that you have to know up front for say 10 years that you may own the car, before you start to decide what brand of car your going to get to being with.
Something like a New C8 corvette with extended warrenty, your $150K budget for the next 10 years may be close if you can pick one up for $80K to start with, while something imported without a warrenty, may as well just triple your buying price for that the car that it's going to be over the next 10 year instead.

you don't have to change the bushings every year, you can actually service them, or you can replace for better that won't wear. But every year is Exotic car shop BS just to make more money. I just went through this with my uncle looking to by a Ferarri

Raptor or K5 Blazer, 100k in mods, 20k left over for gas/trips/tires.

Hit a curb, no problem.

Hit a curb @ 70 mph, still no problem.

Sports cars / Super cars are awesome - But 800 - 1,000 hp in a 4wd that can do more than just roll down a paved street/ track, and isn't afraid of potholes is more awesomer.

Porsche 911 GTS, there's nothing else that can touch it in the $150k range and you'll get it brand new for less than the 150 mark.

I'd put the Aston Martin Vantage as a distant 2nd to the 911, it offers more flash, a V8, and a more traditional GT platform if you want to do long drives.

I think it has merit to point out that all arguments against the Corvette are based around “looks like”. You’re not getting a GT3 for $150k.

The C8 did a 7:12 around the Nurburgring on an open day. That means contending with a bunch of shit box Jettas and 1998 BMW’s getting in the way, it still put up a crazy fast lap. Nurburgring experts expect a 30 second delay caused by traffic, but that could be optimistic.

I asked a similar question 5 years ago.

What could I get that was the most fun, best handling, fastest with a manual transmission (a must). My budget was $100,000, about the same as today when you consider the premiums dealers are asking and getting.

A new 2017 C7 Zo6 Zo7 was a touch over my budget but well worth it. It is not a daily but now has 96,000 miles, lots of track days and a shit ton of fun times with it. If I could do it over I wouldn't do anything different.

The R8 is a buckboard, as well as the GT3.  I would opt for the 911S, or maybe the RS6 avant because of the ride quality.  If I was looking for supercar status I would look at a used mclarran so I would be that guy.

This. Nobody gives a 911 a passing glance anymore, unless it's lemon yellow

I'd also think really hard about a Jaguar F-Type R. There were a couple that ran around Hendersonville, and they never failed to stop people in their tracks. Gorgeous interior and a 575 hp V-8. If I was buying it for a touring/weekend escape vehicle, I'd even consider the convertible.

People here listing off a lot of obnoxious cars without giving much thought to long-term livability.

For a pure fun to drive car, I like older air cooled Porsche 911 or a higher range Lotus Elise/Exige. Will you get your doors blown off by a Tesla? Probably so, but it’s got a little something something that the Tesla just don’t have.

If you include Grand Tourers: A80s, R32/33/34, older DBs, or older FR layout Ferraris check the “cool” box for me as well. But leave some room in your budget for repairs/maintenance

I bought a 911 turbo and ate everything on the road. My neighbor spent $20k in mods on his ZR1 and I destroyed him racing. Literally the only thing that can keep up with you is a Bugatti.

I drove mine almost daily. It is by far the best car I've owned.
