If you had a numbers matching Yugo SKS with bayo. 5 mags and 2k rounds what would you do with it at this point?

It’s the only gun you have that shoots 7.62

You haven’t shot it since 198X and you don’t really like shooting it or how it feels.

You will be told to never sell a gun but would you feel ok selling/trading it for a different gun?

Five mags? If they are the TAPCO plastic mags I'd tell you to find the original ten-rounder and put it back in, then throw the plastic mags in the trash.

Pack it with cosmoline and mothballs (for the mag holders). Label the crate "OPEN IN CASE OF COMMUNISTS".

Do you have any other guns?

From a home defense shtf standpoint, is that the best weapon you have to defeat an incursion by an an automobile or other hard target in your armory?

If so, keep it.

But unless you want it as a collectors item, or an heirloom, why would you possibly keep it?  You won't ever shoot it, you hate it, so sell it to fund something you do want or need.

Do you have a 30cal suppressor? If so sell the SKS and get at CZ527 in 7.62x39.  You can get subsonic 7.62x39 that is just as good and cheaper than .300BO.

I have one with an Omega 300 suppressor and it's a great little rifle.

I just sold a Yugo M59 SKS for $800 and picked up the CZ527 for $777 out the door.  Definitely worth it.  The SKS is rock solid but I wouldn't feel comfortable shooting a deer past 50 yards. I'd take one out too 200 with the CZ.

Joke reply but the SKS is the perfect rifle for this. Pretty slim profile and if something goes wrong it doesn't care about rust.

When it comes to SKS duckbill mags, if you were going to use them, the Tapco mags are actually the best. I sort of regret getting rid of mine even though I put all my SKSes back to original. The Tapco 20s were pretty low profile and loaded fine with stripper clips so you never even had to remove them.

Unless you were smart enough to keep the original, a "Yugo SKS with 5 mags" is not numbers matching. The original mag is gone.

That said, they're fun rifles but if it's been unused for that long sell it. You'll damn sure get more than you paid.

Unless you were just using hyperbole about it age...

If you had a 59/66 in the 80s, you had a rare and expensive ($1k+ then) item imported in low numbers by Mitchells (I think).

OP could get a Ruger American Ranch in 7.62x39. 500 bucks or less, great reviews, uses Mini 30 mags -or- you can swap the magwell out and use x39 AR mags.

I keep a yugo around that I got on the cheap  just to say I have an SKS. I believe every red blooded American should have one or two. But, I am also old enough to remeber $99.00 Norincos.

If the commies dont want their guns American families should step up and provide good home for them.

The Chinese fixed 20 round mags worked great on the Norinco guns, dunno if they were cross-communist-compatible though

OP, sold my Chinese SKS a couple of months ago, w/ the original magazine but in a synthetic stock, for $500 from a table @ a gun show.  If you can find the original mag, put that in & put it up on Gunbroker as a matching #, sell the mags on eBay.

Could you put up a pic of the metal mags you have?  I'm not familiar w/ em.

Yes they work in any and I remember in the early 2000s it was common to swap in the Chinese 20 rounders, they were still easily available as they were not a detachable mag

I guess I never considered the mag in the numbers matching part.

On an SKS, which was never officially designed to utilize a removable mag, the magazine is absolutely a numbers matching part.  SKS's without the original magazine are much less attractive for buyers these days, as original magazines are getting expensive.

It’s the only gun you have that shoot 7.62x39...

How much ammo do you have for it?
It’s not a bad caliber to have.
I don’t want to be limited to one gun / caliber. Not saying you have just one gun.
Nothing wrong with going to a bolt rifle but considering capacity and follow up shots, guess it depends on what you might need.

Tapco collapsible stock and pistol grip, and weld on an airsoft rail to mount a red dot. Make sure you grind off any commie markings.

A CLEAN, UNmolested SKS in FACTORY configuration is a very robust and reliable weapon.

That and 2k of ammo is not something I'd get rid of in today's environment.  IF you want to sell to make a profit I'd wait,  they may be selling for goofy money now but I wager they'll be selling for insane money in a matter of months....

If you're going to keep it I'd secure an original fixed magazine and some stripper clips (not the new made ones)
Link Posted: 12/13/2020 1:28:53 AM EDT
[#50]
If you dont like it, trade it for a gun you like.

If yer gonna keep it as a stashed or last ditch gun. You can do worse....

But if yer gonna keep it:

Put the original fixed mag back in it (if you dont have it anymore sell the gun). As you are undoubtedly aware, duck bill mags cant be locked in or removed from the weapon with the bolt closed and there is no external bolt catch. Yes the bolt locks to the rear on last shot, but if the follower doest engage internal bolt catch or if the rifle is bumped once the mag is removed, reloading the weapon becomes very cumbersome.

Much better off with the original fixed mag and GOOD stripper clips.

Get some strong chicom strippers, not the flexi crap commercial ones.

And get a cheap sight tool if you dont have one.

Just my opinion.
