.45 - 230gr Ranger

barrel length doesnt matter but I rarely carry anything with a barrel shorter than 4"

I normally carry either my Glock 43X or 45 loaded with Speer Gold Dot 124gr +P.

Rarely, I will carry my Glock 43 loaded with Speer Gold Dot 115gr, though I need to find some 124gr +P Short Barrel for it.

For my J-frame's, I keep some Hornady Critical Defense 110 gr FTX laying around.

Ranger bonded, HST, or Gold Dot (9mm 124gr +P). Any of those three and you are fine, doesn't really matter.

*I use all three.

Mag in the gun has 50 grain liberty civil defense and spare mag that with me has 124 grain Sig vcrown.

I typically carry standard 124 grain HST. It works adequately in everything regardless of barrel length.

Same type of ammo since 1998.
First in a S&W 3913 (1998-2005)
Then in Glock 19 Gen 3 (2005-now)

Never been part of the "flavor of the month club" with ammo, pistol, holster, etc.

G42 has handloaded 90gr XTPs moving at 910fps. They have the same POA/POI at 15yds as my handloaded Armscor 95gr FMJ practice ammo which is moving at 860fps, matching S&B 95gr FMJ, the only factory .380 I've ever shot and chrono'd.

G26 and G43 have handloaded 147gr XTPs moving at 850fps. Same load hits 895fps in a G19 and 940fps in a G17. Practice/range load is a 147gr powder coated lead moving at the same velocity and same POA/POI at 15yds.

Never carried the G17 but have carried all of the others at one point or another.

Figured having defensive loads that mirror the range/match/practice ammo I shoot far more of was a better idea than getting a box of uber-expensive shit that feels differently, doesn't have the same POA/POI, and is used far less frequently due to cost and availability.

It seems like me, many of you carry your hand loads for personal protection. I had always read that you never carry hand loads because an overzealous prosecutor could use that to hang you. I really do not care. I prefer the hand loads because I take a lot of time measuring the powder charges and always use new brass. The are absolutely reliable and consistent.

Just wondering what everyone thinks of hand loads for personal protection.

It's been brought up before, but lawyers on this site who have access to databases where such details would be held have never found a case where a self-defense shooting was deemed justified, but the type of ammo was used against the shooter.

ETA: if the ARF lawyers want to verify or update their findings I'd love to know if this is still the case.

I load my own as I didn't buy a bunch of SD ammo prior to Sandy Hook and the other ammo scares and I'd rather have a round I can reproduce for training and cycling out carry ammo which is tailored to my guns. Having the XTP loads match the same POA/POI of my FMJ match/practice ammo is a nice benefit as well.

Same ammo as I can afford to shoot the most of. I don't like the idea of having ammo that is too expensive for me that I can only have a box or two around at any given time loaded in a couple of mags just in case (even though I do).

So if I can't afford to shoot enough of it to know if it's reliable in my guns and if I can't shoot enough of it to know it's point of aim and point of impact, then I'm not going to use it for carry ammo.
