Click To View Spoiler The MC's original life involved growing up in Japan with a bad case of chuunibyou. However, he was somewhat self-aware of his chuunibyou condition, realizing the limitations that being an ordinary human had placed on his efforts to reach his goal of being some dark champion of justice (but only justice as he saw it) that lives in the shadows. As part of his efforts to reach that goal, he studied various martial arts and trained his body, but also focused on the Clark Kent aspect of his life. Kal-El couldn't just take off his super suit, put on a T-shirt and jeans, then stroll around as a really buff guy that happened to have the same face as Superman. No, he had to change his hair a bit, put on glasses, then put on the mild-mannered act to blend into the background and not draw attention to himself. Of course, the MC's secret life is closer to Batman than Superman, with the fanatical training of his body and mind, learning every style of combat that was available to him, acting in the shadows, and fighting dirty when it will give him the advantage... But he didn't have Bruce Wayne levels of money, so he went with the Clark Kent approach, making certain his grades were just slightly below average (when he could have been at the top of the class, as he put more effort into his studies than his classmates who did things like 'have fun'), working hard to not draw attention to himself, living his public life as the ideal background character. And this is where the MC stands out from the typical chuunibyou. Instead of acting out and openly talking about being the bearer of a cursed eye, the MC turns it all inward, trying to make his fantasy a reality through shear effort, but he realizes that it is just a fantasy, because he hasn't reached his goal. He is still human and stands no chance against a nuclear weapon. To stand up to a nuke, he needs something more than a trained human mind and a trained human body. He needs something paranormal. Magic. ESP. Anything that he can somehow awaken and become something more than human. While practicing meditation and anything else he can think of to try to awaken a paranormal power, he gets a bit delirious and sees a light that he thinks is the glimmer of his coming awakening, so he runs toward it. But it turns out to be the headlights of truck-kun (or was it bus-kun?), running him over to send him off to his next life in an isekai world. In this new life, he discovers that magic exists in this new world. His goal is finally within his grasp. He retains the knowledge and experience of his past life in Japan, but his new body will need training to bring it up to the level of the body that he had when he died in Japan, and he will have to study and master magic, but he has the mind of a high schooler in the body of a child, along with the fanatical obsession to train himself, that he had in his previous life. After reaching a point where solo training is no longer efficient, he takes a similar approach to what he had done in Japan - hone his skills by wandering the steets at night, beating up street gangs, but in this new world he has bandits to beat up. While beating up bandits, he encounters a girl that has a form of blood curse. In this world, when people show signs of having the blood curse (they start changing into something that no longer looks human), their families and friends don't just disown them, they discard them and try to wipe out any memory that they ever existed. The MC uses his magic to cure the girl. She has seen his secret side, but she is someone that no longer has a place in society, no longer has a name. He decides to call her Alpha and takes her in. He ends up talking about various things, including tales from his past life in Japan, which he expects her to view as nothing more than fantasies, tall tales from the mind of a child. Later he rescues and cures another girl that has the blood curse, naming her Beta. Eventually, he has a group of these girls he has rescued and cured. He teaches them various things (including magic), and one day they all leave. He accepts that this was bound to happen someday, as they would grow tired of his chuunibyou antics and move on with their own lives. Click To View Spoiler But this is not what happened. These girls had been discarded by society, their friends, and their families. They had no life. This boy not only rescued them and cured their curse, he taught them his wondrous knowledge. He was their saviour. The ultimate way to serve their master is to go out into the world, search for any signs of the evil organization, rescue and cure other girls that suffered from the blood curse, then add them to their ranks and teach them the wisdom passed down from their master, building the shadow organization that will carry out his will. Click To View Spoiler Later, the MC becomes a student at the academy, still focusing on maintaining the public image of a slightly below average background character, while secretly continuing his training. The girls that he had cured and taught suddenly reappear, and he thinks they are just paying a visit and helping him with his roleplaying for old times sake. However, they are there because this is where their investigations into the evil organization have led them. The evil organization actually exists. The MC is slow to pick up on what is going on around him, not because he is stupid (he isn't stupid, but he's not a genius, either, he just has an insane drive to train his body, his mind, and his magic), but because he is so wrapped up in his roleplaying. He can finally pull off all those cool moves and lines that he always wanted to do in his previous life, and he's going to use every opportunity to do so. Of course, if some evil guy pops up in front of him, it's just a golden opportunity to check off another cool move or line on his bucket list, so he has to defeat them (if it involves cool moves and lines). The girls see his mysterious lines and actions as more proof of just how far ahead of them their master is, deducing the plans of the evil organization while they are still trying to piece the puzzle together, moving on ahead of them to meet the evil organization head on. It's a total pastiche of genres mixed together. I dig it but the MC goes from being a total moron who gets lost to a man with a master plan that's flawlessly executed. He goes from making up his own conspiracy and secret society to fight and then it suddenly manifests itself in real life. At first he was talking about how he knew it was all fake but then when it starts to come out that it's real he's totally nonchalant about the whole thing and doesn't even go.. WTF this was real? If he was in Overloard he'd be both Ainz Ooal Gown and Demiurge at the same time and depending on the day he's either bumbling around like Ainz or the master strategist like Demi. Also it seems like we’re missing huge chunks of plot, where did/how did Shadow Garden develop their tech for example? |

Originally Posted By joe_sun: Also it seems like we’re missing huge chunks of plot, where did/how did Shadow Garden develop their tech for example? View Quote Much of what they developed, is based on stories that he told them, likely as an outlet for his chuunibyou that he had spent so many years keeping secret from the world while he pursued his goal of being seen as just a slightly below average background character. Click To View Spoiler Take a look at cults that have existed over the last half century or so. They take in teenagers that feel their parents didn't give them enough love, brainwash them into thinking the cult is the only entity that cares about them, then puts them to work for the cult, 'giving their life purpose'. In this world, the MC wasn't trying to make a cult. But these weren't teenage girls that thought their parents weren't giving them enough love, these were teenage girls that their parents had paid people to dispose of them and wipe out any trace that they had ever existed, because of the social stigma attached to the curse. The girls that he personally had cured and taken in, became the apostles of this cult. They then went out into the world to find disciples, curing other cursed girls using the magic cure they had learned from their master, then giving those disciples a purpose as part of the cult. It snowballed in a very short amount of time. As an organization grows, its operating expenses grow. They needed a source of income, so they turned to the teachings of their master (his stories from his previous life in Japan). One of the common tropes of isekai is a reincarnated person using knowledge from their previous life to introduce a product into that world. Invention is a mixture of inspiration and perspiration - he had given them the inspiration with his ramblings about the wonders of another world, and they had a small army of fanatics willing to focus on making those wonders a reality (and magic can create some shortcuts in this process). In a world without internet or electronic mass communications, merchants are a good source of information, as they use their networks to gather intel on things that could impact their business, even offering that information to others for a price or giving it away when it benefits them. Building a merchant network served two purposes for the cult. It provided an income to cover their growing expenses, and it created an information network for them to gather intel and pass it along within their organization. The original apostles became the board of directors for this company that became the public face that the cult showed to the world and maintained their positions as apostles of the cult that existed in the shadow of the merchant company, with Alpha as the chair of the board and the first apostle. When the MC sees what they have done, he's somewhat irked that they used the knowledge from his rambling stories to do the classic isekai 'get rich off of introducing products from another world', while he struggles on a student allowance with the extra expenses of obtaining props for his chuunibyou fantasies of acting out his role of operating in the shadows (it really is something that is easier to do with Bruce Wayne money, instead of Clark Kent money). But he knows that following that particular trope would be an impossible conflict with his own goal of presenting himself as the perfect 'average background character' to the world. He still doesn't realize the scale of what they are doing, and mentally pigeonholes it as them following that trope and getting rich off of the otherworldly products he told them about. |

Their master, and his teachings included the knowledge that there is an evil organization working in the shadows of this world (some of those chuunibyou fantasy stories from anime and manga from his previous life). Maybe he ends up doing it later, but even this early in the story I don't get why Denji doesn't carry small vials of blood on his person at all times. With even a small amount of blood basically acting as a senzu bean it seems like a no-brainer tactic. Especially knowing he could be ambushed at any time. Even if Denji is a dumbass you'd think someone else would tell him to.

View Quote My favorite book series right now is called Forgotten Ruin and it's Gateish. In a nutshell a team of Army Rangers go though a portal and accidentally end up literally in the world of Dungeons and Dragons and get stuck there. It's all the things, hilarious, action packed, tragic and it keeps you on your toes. |

Crunchyroll is still adding older series to their site, and earlier I saw several that I hadn't heard of (or at least don't remember hearing of them) but looked interesting. I'm starting to wonder how many shows are now becoming available, that didn't make it to the US before the internet made it so easy to watch current season anime. |

Earthsheltered house - a reinforced bunker that even the treehuggers consider to be socially acceptable.
Earthbag house - like an earthsheltered house, but cheaper and easier to DIY. |
I have two free to watch sites I use for anime, and have yet to find a show either current or from the past not on them.
Only thing is they tend to be delayed one day from release on ongoing anime. |

Denji and Power being smart was fun. The new characters are interesting.

You can select to browse 'new', but that is all the shows that have been newly added to the site. You can select to browse by 'simulcast season', but that only goes back to 2009, and some of the shows added in recent weeks are older than that. Their browsing function could use some tweaks. |

I'm 460 eps into One Piece.
It's interesting. The story telling is really good, the animation is improving but some parts are straight up slogs. |

I guess today Fran and the sword daddy learn that borrowing skills isn't enough some times. They really need to do a training montage fso Fran can learn to level up her standalone skills.

Himeno's scenes in the previous few episodes reminded me of something, though it's not anime-related...
Click To View Spoiler Looper. That movie had one of the greatest and most creative scenes I've ever seen in a scifi time travel setting. The way her limbs vanished one by one reminded me of how they would use the younger version of a Looper to coerce or even kill the older version if necessary. The thought of digits and limbs spontaneously disappearing is really creepy. I know this has nothing to do with the actual thread topic, but thought I'd point out the similarity. |

While rewatching the most recent episode, I came up with a question for those already familiar with the manga.
Click To View Spoiler My question is about Makima and the Future Devil. There's no real point to my question, other than wondering if my hunch is right.
Click To View Spoiler As they're taking Aki to meet the Future Devil, the male agent comments that two people already have contracts with it. One gave up half their lifespan, and the other gave up both eyes, their sense of smell, and taste. Considering we know that Makima has an enhanced sense of smell (based on her comments when she first met Denji), and her eyes certainly appear abnormal, I'm presuming she's the latter person they mentioned. My theory is that she gave up her eyes and smell as part of her bargain with the Future Devil, and then found a creative way to replace and enhance her lost senses. Again, no real point to the question, other than my own intellectual curiosity. Am I close? |
