For all the horror stories I hear about the German V8s, the straight six and the M235i attached to it have been mostly great, with the only exceptions being a fractured charge pipe (why you'd make something that's subjected to pressure and heat cycled out of plastic that brittle is beyond me) that was an easy fix and a stripped transmission drain plug. Apparently ZF thought it would be a great idea to spec their GS6-45BZ's not-tiny drain and fill plugs to be taken out with an 8mm hex key/bit.

Whose the german mfer that designed the layout of the TDI diesels in the beetles?
Doing an alternator on one right now. Asshole engineering at its best.

I dealt with some German engineering firms.. they had a hard time releasing a product without getting it perfect first. vs get it on the market and make it better.

My Audi is the first car I've owned that has ZERO available direct fit items from Crutchfield.
I agree, you open the hood and EVERYTHING either has a cover over it, or requires major disassembly to access. It let's me check my oil, so there's that....

My favorite over-engineered German thing is the adjustable, folding G36 stock that blocks the ejection port when folded in the shortest two positions, so it nerfs itself so it can't fold unless it's in the extended positions.

a piece of German engineering that I've always been fascinated with is the Daimler-Benz inverted-vee V-12 engines of the DB 600 series installed in the Bf 109... it's kind of a wonder of packaging and compact design with all their firepower concentrated around the engine.
Daimler-Benz DB 600 series engines - one of those designs that turned out to be right from the very start... Inverted mounting provided better visibility, lower center of gravity, and improved maintenance access. In the Bf 109, a cannon was mounted between the engine banks and fired through a propeller hub. The DB-601A in the Bf 109E, used fuel injection instead of a carburetor, a great asset in combat since the engine did not cut out under negative g' forces.  round part near the cabin is the supercharger..     |

Do Austrians count as Germans? Glock is not very complex if so. Then you also have HKs which are over engineered and quite a bit more complex.

My personal experience with both German firearms and working with German Engineers would be to characterize it as German precision rather than German efficiency.
