looking at DD uppers. the LW vs gov profile. I personally don't see why they're still so much more popular than LW profiles in the civilian world

"gov't profile" perfectly reflects how much the government can fuck up anything

I have/love both lightweight and gov’t profile.
No arguing here.
ETA: but I think a Gunner is the sweet spot compromise.

my DD v7 has a govt profile. I like it.  YMMV

BCM SOCOM barrel for me.

*mainly because that’s what it came with when I bought it*

If you’re not hanging an M203 on it, the gov’t profile doesn’t do anything but add bulk.

I do have an HBAR NM gun though (just not here, it’s too scary for the soibois).

87% of my AR barrels are light weight.

I guess I'm getting old

lightweight, have one on my DD mid length. easily held/moved around in one hand

SOCOM, or other profile of the stiff variety.

8-9”: .300BO
10.5-11.5”: 5.56
12.5”: 6.5G

Don’t care about anything else.

For some reason I have been digging fancy looking (fluted, dimpled, etc) lately.

Yup, SOCOM profile was how they un-fucked it. It's still not as good as a tapered profile, a la BCM's ELW barrels, but it's a step forward.

Coldblue explained how the Gov't profile came to be; it was believed that the barrel was bending in front of the FSB under field conditions, so they modified the barrel for the M16A2 into a thicker profile. It was later found that barrels were not bending, so it was a pointless increase in weight that fucked up the weapon's balance.

Why the gov't profile continued with the M4, I have no idea...

Lightweight is the real way.

I don't have a Happy Switch or a 203, so less weight is better, and it balances and points better.

I love my DD V7LW it’s a very well balanced rifle.

I'd love to hear some sort of justification for those that are choosing the government profile.

Lightweight all day here.

BA Hanson profile is best profile until someone figures out you need the barrel fat BEFORE the gas block.

I was doing lightweight before it was cool so theres that.

What’s the lightweight profile?  Guess I don’t know exact definition.  I thought it was like pencil but PSA has both lightweight and pencil, what’s the difference?

Fpni. I have a DD lightweight in my mini recce. Shoots well, handles well, cannot complain.

Govt profile is potatoes.

I don't see the issue. Gov profile is retarded. There isn't an argument.

Can anyone tell me why you'd want a lighter weight barrel on a rifle you're not carrying?  I can understand wanting a light weight competition or hunting, but for range or home defense rifles, I always figured heavier was better since you're not carrying it around.

.625 front to back

Some companies dick it up because they don't want to have two gas blocks

I also thought pencil and lightweight were the same.

Good barrel.  Lightweight profile.  Free float tube.  No issues.

If you find a barrel that starts twisting/bending as it heats up, buy a barrel from a better company and try it.  My RRA lightweight chrome lined barrel doesn't move around when it heats up.  Neither does that last barrel I got from PSA (doesn't have a free float handguard, but damn it shoots nice groups.  It might replace my 18" barreled AR that has been my favorite the last couple of years.

I simply hate the way most lightweight barrels look.  If you are running a longer HG that covers it then cool, but even then;  I prefer gov't and heavier profile barrels.

Why so much Gov hate? Trannie between the light and heavy?

I've had both, and the lightweight is better in every way I can imagine

Government weight barrels are stupid. It either needs to be lightweight or it needs to be medium; not this half assed light under the hand guards and Medium on the end.

Well if you are practicing with it a lot you are going to be carrying it so to speak so it will benefit from being lighter.  Also light weight is similar to short barrel. A faster, lighter, handier weapon is always better in a fight.

Gov profile gets more hate though because it is effectively lightweight after the gas block and medium profile in front.  so more mass at the end.

Govt. profile is about as efficient as anything else the government does.

Now you all make me want a lightweight setup. I have a few different profiles but never bought lightweight because they look ugly without a full length handguard

Government profile seems like a waste to me.

My do-everything rifle is a medium-contour midlength Sabre Defense (remember them?) Recon. Had it for twelve years and it's an amazing rifle.

That being said, I just got a BCM LW midlength which might be even better for HD or anything that isn't precision.

My 10.5 is gov profile, but there's really not much barrel in front of the gas block...
My Noveske is "recon" profile, and the PSA 16" middy I just built is gov profile.
None of them really seem bulky to me.
