Gutless from the factory, but not so bad with some modifications.

I miss my 70s cars.

I had a 77 Grand Prix SJ like this for my first car. Mine had  a red interior.

Had a lot of fun with that old car. The 400 big block sounded mean even if it had shit horsepower.

My father had a 78 Fleetwood, IIRC it had the 500ci engine. It was a car I admired 20 years after he sold it. It was just like this one with a little more mint green in the paint. And had green leather with a green Landau top. . It would do wicked burnouts though and plow through the snow in the winter.

My family had a stripped down 1977 E350 with a 460 as one of our long distance courier vans.

It would walk that lil red wagon and a smokey and the bandit trams am right up to around 80 mph

Maybe by then in something but really started to be common by 1985.

No one wants to admit they had an Oldsmobile diesel POS?

We had one, yanked the motor and tossed in a 68 or 69 350 rocket. For a ''luxury'' car [delta 98] it would roast the tires, especially with the diesel rear end gearing.

I forgot to add the two-wheel nutjobs.
At the time, they were running low-7s pushing 200mph.
That is just full of NOPE

Especially that one. POS

Still the Chevelles and Malibus would run if you slightly modified them with a 454.
Had a kid that had an early 70's Z28 that could lift the front tires if he tried hard. Hot rodded 302.
Still like the sorry ass CJs. But they were fun.

Starting in 1973 and lasting for about 8 - 10 years, American cars sucked.  My 2016 Nissan Frontier would be a gas mileage god back then when compared to American automobiles.  Imagine a car with a 350 cubic inch engine with a top speed of 92 miles per hour.

G-bodies, some F-bodies, Fox body cars (even the fairmont and capri) are about it as far as domestic cars made in that time period that I like, all were gutless factory stock...I'm partial to the G-body and it's potential though. had this one since 1992

LOL cars that kept running (or trying to) after you turn the ignition off.

Some are good hot rod prospects now though.

Why is there such a damn romanticism about shit cars of the 70’s and 80’s. All the big 3 were shit, all of them. Get behind the wheel of a Fairlane, Monte Carlo, K-Car, whatever and it drove like shit. The 80’s is where Japanese car took over and never looked back; look at a Camry or Accord in the mid 80’s vs the Taurus, Malibu or Lancer. No fucking comparison. Little lone sports cars.

For the record, my first car was a ‘73 Mercury Comet which was dreadful. The ONLY saving grace of that car was it’s (thirsty) 302 v8 and even so, a 4 banger from one of the Japanese, little lone BMW/Porsche and the like (granted flat 6’s,) would spank it. Just fucking no....

Nothing American, that was an ugly, low quality, shitty time period in American automobile history.  It was the Dark ages for US cars.

But...

There were a number european and japanese cars worth looking at.

I was curious what those were going for these days.  Wow, the 76' and 77' model years have certainly appreciated nicely.  Some unmolested examples going for over $30k.

I miss having this one. I had the bucket seats. not the bench shown in the ad. And my 360 was heavily modified, with an aluminum racing manifold and all the goodies. Definitely oueperformed the stock motor.

That's mid seventies and what's funny is some kids I know think these are old school cool.
These young people just don't understand.

My late seventies parking lot had first gen camaro's and a 78 z28.
There was even a 76 corvette that the hot rich girl owned.mustangs and a couple Go's.
Who knew those cars would be worth so much.

This is almost exactly the twin of the '78 Cadillac I used to own.

For all its late 70s GM engineering faults, I still loved that car.

These two photos show the car as mine was.  Exact color match, exact interior style and color.

If I had money to burn I'd get that car,  or acquire rebuildable examples and have it faithfully recreated but with a lot of modernization.   Entire drive train gets updated,  electronics as well.

I like to think of G body cars as a blank slate for modification. They have full frames and can accommodate virtually any engine and transmission you choose. They have good aftermarket support, so pieces to improve the suspension and brakes are easy to obtain. And they are from a time when the manufacturers were trying to lighten things up, so their weight is not objectionable.

And there's like some unwritten rule somewhere that all modded Malibus have to be insanely fast. People seem to build them that way more than the others.
