My carry setups. Dan Wesson Valor .45 and a worked over Tisas lightweight commander in 9mm. I got bit by the 1911 bug last year. I'd like to get another 1911 with a red dot. Maybe a Dan Wesson Vbob or something from Springfield.

Well, perhaps not.

I just found a super deal on a brand new Tisas "Duty" 5" in 9mm.  The B9R, single stack with a rail.
Ordered a magwell, and grips.  The plan is to set it up exactly like my Operator.

Just waiting for it to ship.

Battlehawk Armory.

So yesterday, a friend and I went off to the range with the above gun, a DW Guardian, and my Operator 45acp.
Ran several drills with each.
Hackathorn's 12345 drill
5x5
and dot torture.

While the RO commander above ran flawlessly, and I was able to complete all drills [dropped two shots on dot torture weak hand.] it feels completely different than the DW in the way it runs.  The DW may seem smoother cycling?  Is it the 4.25 vs 4.0?  The quality of the build?  I'm not sure, but the red dot gun was definitely easier for my old eyes to use.  The irons on the DW are easy to see, and use, a 10-8 rear and Kensight lime green/trit combo.

The Operator had weak extraction the last time I shot it....erratic is probably a better word.  Adjusted the extractor, and all brass is going to the same spot now.  Zero FTF, FTF, FTE.

I had given up on 45acp for a while due to arthritic hands, but there's something very easy about this gun;
Glad to be back in.

I have a Tisas Duty [5"] single stack with rail inbound [9mm] which I am going to set up exactly as the Operator, save the caliber.  It'll be a 'project', and for the out the door price, there's much room to experiment with different things.

Ryan Grizzle’s products have been mentioned here several times, but I’d like to add my appreciation for his leatherwork.  Note the careful forming on the back of this holster for an Officer’s Model 1911:

Ryan and Kay are all around good people too. I haven’t used leather holsters in a long time, but all of my hunting knives ride in his Grizzle Special sheaths. Phenomenal hard wearing products.

Sending the Springfield out for a direct mount RMRcc today!

This will have to tide me over for a 1911 with a dot until Dan Wesson makes some damn plates.

A couple of Lon Humphrey knives. No special super steel, just 1095, but they sharpen up easy and are handmade. I’ve been using these two for almost a decade now. Lots of deer cleaned between the two of them.

Took the new Tisas 5" to the range today to check functionality, ejection and accuracy.
Last night I blacked out the two white dots on the rear sight, and put neon orange in the front sight.
Better.
Installed a magwell, still waiting on grips.
Started at 10 yards, 10-8 extraction test, and for accuracy.
Fired and ejection was fine, all landed in the same place.
Accuracy was acceptable, trigger was pretty good for an inexpensive gun.

Put a target at 15 for a double tap drill.
Put all into an 8" target with ease.  This full size, all steel gun has a really soft recoil effect.

Final was out to 25, on an 18x12" silhouette.  Controlled pairs, 2 second par.
The legs kinda fell off here, all me, and definitely trigger control, grip
Definitely have more work to do with this one.
All being said, pretty good for the money.
Would I carry it, NO.
Will it be a Range gun, and for gaming, sure, why not.

The shameful target.

My Specialist holster came in yesterday from US Duty Gear, and after getting the pistol stuck (as always) the first time, got it adjusted perfectly.

Thanks for the recommendation @ARgunner0210, this thing is solid. Just wish they'd add an M81 wrap option.

Looking good man, glad it worked out for you.

As far as M81 cordura, you can always just buy the holster in black and apply the cordura yourself. There are a few companies selling the raw cordura  that's either self-adhesive or attached with 3M spray glue.

My range buddy picked up an almost brand-new full-rail TRP (for under $1k OTD )

For that reason, we had a range day with our 1911s to celebrate.

I have watched this thread since the beginning, and for me (66 years old) it has been entertaining to watch some people’s voyage of 1911 discovery. It was kind of like seeing the excitement of Christopher Columbus when he made his discovery of America from a Viking’s perspective.

When I was growing up, the vast majority of my elders were men who were in WWII, and naturally they used 1911s before and most owned them then. 1911s figured prominently in the toy guns being sold in stores, and I even still have one in my gun closet. The slide moves to load toy ammo and everything.

My father gave me his 1911 (WWI era, made in 1917) when I was 14. I had been shooting it off and on since 8. In his line of work, he carried it overseas, so it had some use on it. I made the Governor's 20 team with it in Oklahoma in 1990. Around 2018, John Harrison did some magic on it, and it will shoot 3 inches at 25 yards.

When the 1911 was replaced by the Beretta, I was caught up in the “wonder 9” train as well. I had Berettas, Sigs, Glocks, CZs, etc, and I kept coming back to my old Colt. I kept the CZs over the years (14 at one time) and added a series 80 stainless Government model and a stainless Commander. The Commander I carried around Atlanta when I had to go service customers computer rooms. It was a constant companion.

Kimber had become something of a name, and in the mid 90s I had the chance to handle one at my LGS. The quality was superior to Colt, and the features were better, but I could not swing one for a few more years. I bought one about 10 years later when we moved to Memphis, and after the 200-300 round break in, I carried it. Over the space of just under 2 years, I put >12,000 rounds through it due to near constant practice. I knew where that pistol would hit at almost any distance out to 25 yards, and muscle memory being a thing, I could easily place my shots without using the front sight. I had full confidence in that pistol. It has been very reliable and is now my son's.

While living in Memphis, I bought all sorts of other brands and styles on 9mm, but I did not have the same skill with them as I did with the Kimber.

Since 2010, I have had a lot of 1911s from SA (8, 3 remaining), Kimber, GI, DW (3, 0 remaining), Fusion, Les Baer, ACW, and my old friend, Colt. They are all very reliable. I can shoot the non-1911 pistols I have very well, but I prefer the old/fat/slow round coming out of the 1911. A half inch round will not be smaller than a half inch, and there's something to be said for that.

Everything comes down to preference and confidence. There is no one choice better than another.
