I never think about Germany and only rarely think about England. Especially in the WWII timeframe. I wonder if we even sent a carrier to the European theater? |

I wonder if we even sent a carrier to the European theater? View Quote During 42' and there was the USS Ranger CV-4 and USS Wasp CV-7 as they were considered too slow for Pacific fleet action. I remember the Hornet making trips over. Carriers supported all the amphibious landings and later the jeep carriers were ideal for convoy duty. And I think there was a Brit carrier sunk by surface action in the Med. (TF Taffy 3 lost a escort carrier during its heroic stand at Leyte Gulf to surface action) The Brits lost HMS Ark Royal end of 41' and we lost the Ranger in 43' both to German U boats in the Atlantic. The Admiral Graf Zeppelin was never completed. Italians nor Russians had carriers in WWII. The Graf Zeppelin used sister hull to the Bismark. Japan 3rd super battleship (Musashi/Yamato) was converted to a carrier (Shinano) but sunk on her maiden voyage by a US submarine. |

I never think about Germany and only rarely think about England. Especially in the WWII timeframe. I wonder if we even sent a carrier to the European theater? Beginning the war with 6 older carriers, they had to build modern vessels. In no small part due to the lack of German flattops and their concentration on destroying our Atlantic Lifeline to Britain, the Royal Navy shouldered the bulk of carrier operations there, HMS Ark Royal, HMS Furious and numerous others steamed from the Med to the Cape of Good Hope to the Indian Ocean during global war. Our Light Carriers were the final nail in the Iron Coffins of the U-Boat war, convoy air cover supported by ASDIC, Hedgehog and epic Convoy Escort production sealed their fate. Meanwhile in the Pacific, the British and Commonwealth were a vital supporting asset to the USN fighting a gut bustin' mother lovin' naval war to the bitter end. |
