Lots of good info here.

Here's my SHTF OSOE Micro rig. I tried a lot of big heavy chest rigs loaded to capacity and they just drove me nuts. I used this recently on a simulated overnighter and it worked out great.

Nice setup! I have an OSOE Mirco rig too, however only my chest harness is OSOE, the rest is a hodge-podge of different pouches I've bought and or won.  Mine looks similar, and I have been wanting to add a pouch just like the one where you store your surefire.

It looks like all of your gear is OSOE, if so which double mag pouch did you get? (Guess I'm gonna have to look over their product line again) If not, which double mag pouch and which pistol magazine/light pouch? I have a Sec-Ops pouch to maybe fill the role of the end pouch, but I have not found a double mag pouch that will let me attach another pouch to it at what would be 90 degrees to the primary line like you have.

From which vendor did you buy it?

Thanks!

IMHO, this is a good, semi-minimalist rig, but the fly in the ointment is that the platform is too small, and forces the user to double-up on various pouches in order to carry a reasonable amount of essential equipment.  Meaning no offense to the poster, of course; this is intended as constructive criticism, and food for thought, not slamming.

If this is worn on the user's chest, it will thus elevate the user's body unneccessarily over a single-thickness rig that was a bit wider, and allowed single-thickness emplacement of carried gear.

i dunno about you, but if TSHTF, and I find myself on a two-way firing range, I want the least amount of gear stopping me from getting the lowest profile possible.  YMMV.

Not to mention that since the platform is made to be narrow, if the user assumes a prone shooting position, some, mebbe all of the mags will be tough to access.

It is for this reason that configure my veasts/chest rigs to carry mags on the sides of the body, and small stuff at center body.  YMMV.

Raf,

Good comments as usual.

You're correct in that if all I wanted to do is bury my hide in ground without a shovel, it would be harder to do wearing my vest (which is similar in thickness to this one).  And time may come, I may want to do just THAT! But, I can shoot prone wearing it without any problems, I practice just that and I wear it in the tactical rifle matches I participate in. Shooting prone is not hard especially if you consider that with any vegetation growing you have to try and obtain some type of "high prone" position so you can see to return accurate fire over it.  Granted Iraq, Afghanistan, and many areas of the US are devoid of growth, but here in the eastern US––even with the lack of rain and the high summer temps––there is enough grass that I have to look over it if I want to shoot hogs around here. Yes, there is the whole problem of grass providing only concealment (mostly of the target) when you want to send aimed fire, and not cover (mostly of my precious hide) if there should be rounds are incoming. But, I think you see the point I'm getting at.

I can also get to the pouches easiest from left to right. So, yes you are correct in that some (for me really only the far right pouch) is hard(er) to access prone.  That's why the far right one is my admin pouch––I notice others are setup similarly.

As far as too small, I think we've seen it questioned on similar threads as to how many mags do we (meaning us while in civilian capacity) need to carry. For some reason, I and could be wrong, it seems that 6+/-  was deemed enough or too many depending on the poster. It could be debated 4 mags is enough. So, I guess, I'll leave that up to the individual to decide.

Like you, I'm not busting on anybody or any setup.  I enjoy the intelligent discourse. It may tease out another weakness in my setup––or maybe for someone else––and that's a good thing as far as I can see.

Here is my chest rig and I am a friend of Currahee.  I have a Diamondback tactical Low Profile Chest Rig.  From left to righ in the pocketst, LED flashlight, gun cleaning gear, 2-cliff bars a survival tin and misc gear, some BOK stuff, 2 Glock 22 Mags.  Up top I have 4 mags and my HX370S 2 Meter radio and mic.  I really like this setup because it is very light.  I dont need 15 mags, 2 pistols, a shotgun in a molle scabard on my back, a gas mask, MOPP suit and a rifle to carry around.  This is MY ideal 2nd line setup.

Good, reasonable rig.  Now, meaning no offense, the un-flapped pouches are probably fine in Mississippi, where you live, since freezing rain is a rare thing there.  I hope your comm rig is totally waterproof, and suspect it is so, else you would not have posted pic.

However, back to the un-flapped pouches and exposed mags/radio.  Let's say you had to toss that into a swamp or body of water, and drag it through some long mud flats.  Do you think doing so would enhance your radio's or your mag's reliability?

Just asking, and meaning no offense at all.  Before you answer, recall that all that stuff WILL be dragged through any and all crud that is available in YOUR AO, and as I recall, Mississippi has some water, swamps, and mud, most likely.

But that's all right.  I'm just a bit of a crank on the subject.

No offense taken and thanks for bringing up some good things.  Ive used other rigs with velcro and buckles and i prefer the bungee straps.   I'm alot faster pulling mags out with bungee straps than lifting a velcro flap.  I think if its raining or whatever and your stuff takes a dump its gonna get nasty no matter what.  My radio is waterproof.  As far as the mags, I have high confidence that tier 1 mags will run reliably in a tier 1 rifle(Bravo Company Midlength) in alot of bad conditions.  Too me velcro is too loud for pulling mags out and buckles are too slow.  If you need a mag you probably need it fast.  If its rainy and wet, thats what I have my USGI gortex rain suit for.

Guys, thank you for keeping the discussion going with each of your rigs, and the pros and cons of each. I'm really glad all of you are chiming in with your individual wisdom––this is steadily turning into a reference thread that I hope others can use before they go out and spend hundreds on gear they don't need.

Kimber_45, I really like your setup, both as a SHTF rig, as well as a LE active shooter rig. If the DBT chest rig is comparable in price to similar Eagle products, it will be put on my short list. Currently I'm using a 5.11 Bail Out Bag for my patrol rifle/active shooter needs, but it flops around too much and lacks any flexibility.

Interestingly enough, I think the same 5.11 bag would make a great field-expedient "combat resupply" bag, with 6 rifle mags, some pistol ammo, some water, and an MRE or so.

Something I did with my nalgene bottles that I think you guys may like is wrap them with duck tape. I choose bright orange suitable for a survival situation as opposed to SHTF, but you can pick any color you think suits your needs. I also highly recommend the folding cups for the bottoms of the bottles. they are a little pricey but worth it. they take up no extra room and weigh very little. again, they are more of a survival item then SHTF item, but the two go hand in hand.

And great job on the rig OP. very well though out.

Where are you guys getting your cups that fit the bottles?

Big camping stores have them.  I think I got mine from Bas-Pro.  Shouldn't be hard to find online at all.

A side not on those cups.....
They are great when being used with a nalgene bottle but i have split two of them now when just keeping them empty~ in an outside pocket on a pack.

My rig is the actual OSOE Micro AR rig so its a 1 piece rig. No PALS so i cannot add or change pouches, other than the Maxpedition pouch i mounted on the side for a light. I love the rig, very small and lightweight. I tried a TAG Gladiator, Eagle SKD, Esstac Boar, and a TT Mav, but they were just too big and bulky.

I purchased it through optactical.com. Seemed like they were the only ones with any OSOE gear in stock at the time, even OSOE said it would be a 2 month wait.
