Posting this to gauge interest in an "ARFCOM West" HF net.  This net would initially be called out of EN00, the goal would be to have multiple NCS west of my QTH.

Pick all poll options that work for you. Days listed in the poll are days which should work for me most of the time.

Times in the poll are CDT.

Edit: OP screwed up the original poll so a new one is up.

Edit 2: The ARFCOM West SSB Net is a go, Tuesday 20:00CDT 01:00UTC.  We'll start on 40 meters then move to 20 meters to try getting the distant ARFCOM stations checked in.  The antenna here is a non resonant doublet @ 28' with legal limit feeding it.

I have no real preference for a particular day, so didn't vote in the poll, but would try to participate.

I am very interested. Gonna be 20M for me at that time. Maybe 40m in the winter.

Tuesday is OK for me, Wednesday is better.

I don't know if I'm west enough to make it to Alaska consistently on 20.  Definitely willing to try though.

As long as you get some stations in the PNW I should be able to relay in pretty often.

I might try to call in once in a while. I dont do well with scheduled things that often. hell showing up for work is a struggle some times

20 seems to stay open pretty late around here, as far as I can tell. Looking at my logbook, I have definitely made SSB DX contacts in Europe and South America on 20 in the evening after 00:00z.

I'm like that, too. What I did was add an alarm for the Tuesday night SSB net on my phone that goes off every Tuesday. Life gets in the way sometimes, but at least I get a reminder now.

Thinking some more about the time for a western net, starting at 20:30 CDT would help propagation to California, Washington, ECT.  Starting at 20:30 CDT would also allow members time to check into the JS8 net if they chose.

Am I correct in thinking that would be 01:30z?

No, I had a conversation with GreenDragon about the start time,, I didn't want to overlap with the JS8 net he has been running, then I had a work call.

I will call it next Tuesday @ 01:00 UTC.

I will make sure the alarm is on my phone.  I never know what my wife has planned day to day, but if I don't have anything going on I will participate.

Tuesday is as good a day as any for me.

What band?  40m?

We'll try 40 and see how that goes.  What part of the country are you in?

I will try. I can hear NM TX AZ WA OR pretty regularly.

I was regularly checking in to the JS8 net, but the time is right at dinner for us, so I haven't lately. I wouldn't mind another JS8 group, not interested in SSB. Eventually, something you can leave on and check in with everyone, get reports. Digital, Morse (still working on copy speed). Anyone have any private VarAC chats or mess with it? I have it mostly setup. A private BBS of sorts, is what I would be interested in mostly. I can hear tyrex13 pretty regular most bands on JS8. I am only running 10w max with my 705.

Utah.

I haven't really spent a lot of time on 40m out this way though because most of my operating lately is SSB POTA, and probably 87% of that is on 20m.  But I have both horizontal and vertical antennas I could try.

It should start on 20m and then move to 40m. I'll never make the States on 40m that time of day.

Updated title and OP.

Based on the pole lets plan on starting this net Tuesday on 40 meters @ 20:00CDT (01:00UTC) then move to 20 meters to try getting some distance ARFCOM stations checked in.

For those who answered "no, I would not participate" what would it take to get you participating in a HF SSB net?

You guys are right at the noise floor into the California WebSDR

Net control is good readable into the Cali SDR, negative copy in AK. Most stations are now weak readable into Cali WebSDR.

I usually have good success with Lumpkin Co Schools in GA and the Northern Utah stations on webSDR when trying to get the first net.

Cannot hear NC at all.  Heard AZ, CA and WI pretty strong.  Others are all in my noise here in CenTex.

In NV listening at the very tail end of the net, but can't TX at the moment...  NCS was 59; exceptional audio.  Heard other stations attempting to check in (including the KL2 station, who was also 59 in NV).

Okay, net control was S7 to S9 on 40m, but down in the noise on 20m.

Still it was nice finally being able to check into the net.  From my perspective it was a success.

Thank you everyone for your patience with me calling my first HF net tonight, the static crashes were rough on 40 and the band was mostly empty on 20.
On 40 meters the following checked in, signal reports are the S meter reading above my noise floor;
Gerard Pennsylvanian 54
Bruce Texas 55
Ken Nebraska 59+
Michael Michigan 55
Gale Wisconsin 59+
Jason Ohio 58
Bob Massachusetts 55
Mike Virginia 42
Chris Illinois 56
Andrew New York relay
Jim Michigan 55
Ron Utah 44
Rio Indiana 57
Aaron South Dakota 42
Ron Michigan 55
Mike Michigan 55
Kenneth Colorado 43
Delbert Saskatchewan 56

On 20 meters the following checked in, signal reports are the S meter reading above my noise floor;
Bob Massachusetts 42
Gale Wisconsin 55
Tom California 44
20 meters was strangely silent right around the time of the net, so solar conditions definitely were not helping.

It was good to hear you in there!  I'll do it again as my work schedule allows.  I suspect that 40 will get much better out your way as fall comes around.

Great job, there were a lot of checkins to deal with on 40m.

I heard most of the 40m checkins.

I could barely hear you on 20m, so I didn't checkin. I could hear AZ well, and MA was booming.

Nice job calling the net, FlatlandBusa.

Oddly, your signal strength in my QTH faded somewhat as the net progressed. Just the whim of the propagation gods, I suppose.

Lorazapam and I spke for a while on 20M afterwards and his signal was VERY strong here. Probably the best I've heard him. Go figure.

What is everyone's opinion on the time the ARFCOM West net was held?  I don't think 40 had gone long enough to reach far out west, and 20 seemed like it was to long.

From the replies more people were hearing me than I was hearing, so I will probably reduce power from legal limit down to 300-400 watts next week.
