What does the RACS do that the AICS AX doesn't? Or is it really worth the extra $$$?

I'm willing to bet Remington cut the cost way down for military that is probably close to what AI's cost would be. Plus it's American

Knowing the contract price of the AX chassis to Crane and the production cost of the RACS chassis, I can assure you that that didn't happen unless Remington gave them away. I can buy the American part though, but it hasn't stopped other customers from using the AI chassis.

I think someone mentioned $700 for the LW RACS. But I'm taking it as a grain of salt

You're wise to take that with a grain of salt as that figure is way, way off the mark.

If that number is way higher than cost....then that's a great deal in the case of us lowly peasants in the 1st Civ Div

Hell, the AI AX 2014 chassis are $1500.

I'd like to get a RACS one day....maybe when I win the lottery or get that mail box money

I haven't heard yet, but it'll be public record before long I'd guess.

I have also heard that they are paying around $600 per chassis. Maybe remington is finally only charging 10% profit on their products to the government. In this climate I would hope that if they were trying to rape the USMC they would just tell remington to piss off and keep using the current stock. I manage construction contracts for the NAVY and USMC and the cap on profit is 8%. There is no way the RACS costs remington $3500 just to make.

The benefits of landing a big military contract are usually weighed beyond the profit margin alone - the commercial sales and marketing boost from being able to have that contract often make it worth it to cut to the bone. From what I know on the SOCOM's PSR contract submissions when they were submitted, rifle manufacturers cut costs to the extreme to make it more attractive - in the area of 10%. The same is occurring with CSASS submissions now.

Nobody said it cost Remington $3500 to make, but it is in the ballpark of $2000 as I remember it by the time they bring it to market when other things are taken into account. I'm not sure, but I think Cadex may have something to do with that whether it's licensing fees or whatever.

As a person who works with contracting, you're probably also aware of lowest price clauses within purchasing contracts. It's kinda hard to lowball a bid when you have other contracts that charge significantly higher without violating those contracts,

Is the above day ops weight of 16 lbs correct ? That seems awfully heavy for a rifle that was supposedly lightened up with a shorter and thinner barrel, alloy/titanium parts instead of steel, slimmer stock etc.
I'm giving serious thought to tearing down my A3 boat anchor clone and building a XM3. Of all the parts on the XM3, which are the hardest to come by ?

16lbs is probably close.

My Mk13 Mod 5 weighs 18lbs without suppressor and ammo. The stocks between the 2 probably weigh close to the same (guestimating).

Surely 8" of barrel doesn't weigh 2 lbs.

The hardest thing to find would probably be the Surefire flash hider. I have seen some recently for sale online, but usually from places I've never heard of and questionable if they even have them in stock.

The stock would probably take some time to get, given the time it takes McMillan to fulfill an order. You could probably order a blank and have Long Rifles, Inc mill it for you. That would probably speed things up.

Thanks Dan, Is the flash hider restricted by Surefire ? It's not listed on their website, or just not in production anymore.
How about a drawing of the barrel specs ?

I do not know if they make the .30 caliber flash hider any more. All they have on their website is the muzzle brake. The flash hider is not restricted. Ever since the SOCOM suppressors came out, their legacy suppressors and parts are little harder to find.

If you want a 100% correct XM3, contact IBA as they built them.

The titanium scope rail and recoil lug were IBA items and I doubt if there is anyone else making those, so I think you're right, if you want a true spec build XM3 IBA will have to be involved.
Time to re-think things.
Thanks dangerdan.

Having the long range rifle pic thread in the GD forum is a little confusing since the semi auto thread is in the Semi Auto forum.

Dan--
Have you fired any subsonics from your Mk13 yet? What kind of range and velocity are you getting from said loads?

Did I read correctly that production of the AICS 2.0 has come to an end?

I haven't seen any .300 subs.

I don't know my exact velocity. I think 2900 or 2950 fps is the average from the test barrel with 220gr SMK's.

Longest so far was 1,100 yards in a family friend's pasture. I would like to push it out further...at least 1,600 yards

Need to buy more ammo. Started out with 200 rounds of 220gr SMK's.

Not sure about the lagacy 2.0 stocks. The new style AICS stocks are fairly new (what I have). I doubt AI would stop production that soon....but then again they have recently came out with AT and 2014 chassis

The new style AICS came put the same time the AX was introduced

There was a group of guys developing a subsonic load (for short work) over on the hide a short while ago... Can't seem to find it via google search. Didn't think it would turn out well, but I seem to remember they found a pretty stable formula.

I'll keep looking.

I don't believe Remington or Badger makes the MARS rail anymore, at least not for commercial sale. However, PRI makes a scope base very similar.

Took the A3 out the other day to sight in again after using the scope on another rifle for a bit. It is a hammer. Bottom right target was shot with the A3 with one sighter slightly low then 9 rounds. This was with 118LR and I was surprised at the consistency. The other target were shot with the AI that was a recent purchase. Man, I can't wait for my A1 to come home from Quantico.

I'm dealing with the same issues now on a Chenowth Desert Patrol Vehicle I'm restoring. After dealing with 6 different people, I'm only now starting to get a better picture considering that most of the info you see is inaccurate or has been regurgitated from the same single source over and over again.

From a clone perspective on the mk13 would a surefire socom 762 be acceptable or is the mk11 can the only "clone ok" can?

It would depend on the generation, mod 7 uses the Surefire suppressor but all others up to that point used the the MK11. Since the MK11 doesn't use a threaded barrel/flash hider to attach there wouldn't be the possibility of armorers replacing the older MK11's with SOCOM's in the field (presumably, unless they had the ability to cut threads or rebarrel)
