Bushmaster 45

Has anyone else seen this?

Kinda like a 45-70 Gubbamint.

Cool? No.

Wasn't there a short lived caliber called the .45 Professional? essentially the same thing....IIRC. a .45 caliber round that single stacked in an AR. I remember reading abotu it in a gun mag some years back.

I say it'll be a flop. the last one was, as will this. .45 is a good caliber, but in this type of a firearm, there are better options out there.

If you are going for a straight-walled single stack cartridge in the AR, there are several good choices currently available: .458 SOCOM and .50 Beowulf.

ETA: the .458 SOCOM is not straight walled, technically.

+1 Doesn't someone else have a new caliber in this range coming out soon. RRA maybe?

The reason the AR and the PC got so popular is that is they are standardized platforms.  If the 45 caliber rifle version is ever going make it big there needs to 1 and only one choice.  That way you can get barrels, bolts, etc from multiple sources.  This proprietary route will lead nowhere.

Whats wrong with the 50 BW?

.45 Bushy....um, no

I like it and say go for it.

I've never had any experience with the 458 SOCOM or .50 Beowulf, but I'm not sure what drove Bushmaster to pursue the "Bushmaster 45" catridge. It seems that everyone and their brother wants their own cartridge.

A maybe advantage is Hornady making commercial ammo available...

Umm, my opinion... Any new caliber is cool... IT'S SOMETHING NEW!  Practicality and usefulness are a different story...but there is definitely something cool about American intuition.  You know this was just some guy sitting at home bored, because he had gotten done shooting all his other guns, and he was drinking a beer with his buddy.."HEY LET'S MAKE A .45 AR-15!!"

IMO it looks like a solution hunting for a problem

It depends on whether the round will be compatible with currently available .45 pistol bullets.   I dont want to pay the price for .458 or .50 slugs if a cartridge can use my stockpile of 230gr 45acp bullets.   Considering the cost of bulk bullets you could load it pretty cheap in comparison to the other big bore AR cartridges.   If it requires the more expensive bullets then I really dont see much point to it.

The round looks like a .30 carbine on steroids.

Wasn't there some interest a few years ago by the Coast Guard in a AR caliber that could pentrate fiberglass hulls and bulkheads while performing boarding operations? If so, there might be a nice contract down the road somewhere.

Yes, I believe it is a rare cartridge called the 5.56 x 45mm / .223 Remington

BTW, I wasn't making any comparision between calibers, just refering to an old article that might shed some sight on the recent interest in a heavy calibers for the weapon platform we all love so dear.

Have a nice day.

Thank you for that enlightment. Of course we all know there is no tactical situation where the 5.56 x 45mm / .223 Remington can be improved on.

I wasn't being totally serious, but you have to admit that 5.56x45/.223 Remington does seem to work very well in almost all "tactical" scenarios.

I guess I just don't understand. Why cram that in a AR, and be left with a mag capacity of 8 round or so? If you need more power, put down the AR, and pic up a MBR.

45 bullets cheap and it look like it made from cut down 30-06 or 308  brass easy to find. 45 and 06 have the same base. I would take one I would just need some dies.

anyone have any specs on the round?

i'm thinking i could load some pretty bad-ass sabot rounds with that!!!

Damn if the barrel is .45 diameter and the bolt is made to take that type of cartridge I would think it would have been easier to chamber it in .45ACP and make the lower to take either grease gun or thompson mags after all the case head of a .45 ACP cartridge looks angled just like a rifle cartridge and it would be nice to have an AR to go with my 1911...hell Bushmaster should make one of those as well..series 70 of course.

45 ACP does not have enough gas pressure/volume to operate the action of an AR type rifle, but the longer version BM has come up with would.
If you want a 45 ACP AR, you should be watching these threads:

Olympic is the only one producing a 45 ACP upper right now and it is BLOWBACK OPERATED like a 9mm.
Read through those threads for more info.
