Don't think this one has been posted in this thread. Looks like an A2 M4 upper on a fixed stock lower. Camo looks like tiger stripe to me.

I love full-stocked carbines. I built my own after seeing this.

Well my location is Baghdad again.  I did take out the burst trigger and used a SSF trigger that day.  Put M4 14.5" upper and burst back in turning it back it that afternoon.  Armor was bored

XM4?
Does it have to be a N stock to be a XM4?

Is a Circa 2002 Waffle stock a no go? Is there another name for a 14.5” A2 with CAR handgaurds and waffle stock?

A few still images of M4 carbine issued as is during 1990s. No fancy optics, just carry handle sight, CAR15 stock and fat oval handguards. The last picture do show KAC RIS rail. Also noted all the photos of early M4 use peel washer for A2 bird cage & side sling swivel with M16A1 and M16A2 dual side adopter. If you care about these detail for your clone build, it is something reasonably documented in those photos.

These were from the coffee table book "America's Special Forces" that you can still find on eBay for less than 10 dollars.
America's Special Forces

Navy Seals

Green Beret

Rangers

For clone build, Colt LE6920/6921 that was manufactured for commercial sale from 2010-2015? would be the closest base model with little effort to make it to the early M4 specs. Obviously the civilian version rollmark and ground off selector stops cannot be undone, but you can also choose 80% lower route. CAR15 stock, peel washer, dual A1/A2 barrel side sling swivel mount, silver port door spring, ticked selector are easy to replace.

As issued no. Waffle stocks didn’t come out till 03’. Decade after a A2 upper would have been issued. However as anything in the system does get parts replaced as needed. Also the finish would be the Colt Grey and not black unless Arsenal refinished.

Course you could call it a USAF GAU-5 which can use just about every part and combination in existence.

First time I ever even heard of an M4 was when I was in the Marines in 95-96. Some FAST guys had them. My first one I had issued was in 2000 in Bosnia after going Army. Oval hand guards and detachable carry handle with the N1 stock.

Attachment Attached File

I went to an M16A4 after that and was issued my next M4 in 2005. It had the rail and an acog. Still an N1 stock though.

These are not M4 Carbines. These are Colt model 727 carbines.

The top one (in Desert Storm) is a Colt model 723 carbine.

The one @Combat_Diver posted could be an early model 723 or it could be a 653. Sometimes the only differences between an early 723 and a 653 were a 1:7 twist bore, A2 front sight post, and A2 pistol grip (but someone might've put an A1 grip on it if they preferred it). Based on the year, should be 723.

Yeah, the Delta guy guarding Schwarzkopf has a 723, and I've always understood NSW used 653s until replacing them with 727s (same with the Ranger Regiment). The one photo above shows an M16A1 marked lower. Of course, it could have a replacement upper or barrel as well.

I love that build.  If I'm not mistaken, isn't the two position buffer tube correct for that era?  Or had they already gone to the multi-position tube?

Getting into granular detail, would a Colt A2 upper marked C AF be appropriate for a 20in M16A2 or just the A2 carbine?

Great thread!

There is an extensive list on Wikipedia, though sure not exhaustive or perfect, but its a decent reference on the evolution of the M16 family of rifles.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Colt_AR-15_and_M16_rifle_variants

Between the two its a great source for retro builds, mine will be a 723 inspired build when its done.
