Exactly, I'm down for a pistol length for an upcoming 300 bld. 7"...

Kinda new to the light weight build crowd, and didn't read every post in 76 pages. There seems to be mixed opinions on the magtech lowers (still available and cheap too). But I don't see anyone using them for the light weight builds. Why?
Are they really that crappy?

They are both heavier than polymer options and they break, sooo...yeah, not very popular. For my current LW project I'm using a fostech / magtec upper, but I wouldn't use their lower. I'm going to run a tegra poly lower. If it breaks, well, a 3 pack of them is $99.

I have seven Magtech and one Fostech lower. NEVER had a problem with them.

They are light weight and inexpensive. The fit of the lower is nearly perfect with almost all quality uppers, I use a lot of Aero uppers without F/A and delete the dust cover. It also fits nice with the Fostech upper. I have one 2A Balios upper and it fits great on the MagTech lower. I tried for over 3 years to get a Magtech upper, happy with my one Fostech upper. Fostech is the new producer of the Magtech.

My latest build of 22 Nosler with heavy 39.9 ounce barrel got down to 4.45 pounds by using a Magtech lower with a Fostech upper.

Yeh the Tegra is both lighter and cheaper.

But magnesium\aluminum mix isn't anodized, more like a paint. I don't care, easy to touch up.

I know how to assemble an AR, I don't force fit things like the tight fit at the buffer tube threads.

Another thing I don't do is drop the rifle off a two story building and I don't run over it with a heavy truck.

I also don't use it on 338, 450 or 458 uppers as my shoulder can't handle those and I shoot for accuracy.

Got my first Mag lower in mid 2014, it has been part of many builds and shot everything.

IMO, 4.5lbs is the sweet spot of perfect balance in a LW rifle.

So has anyone ever seen or purchased from this company Surmount Defense?  https://surmount-defense.com/  I'm looking at trying out there aluminum bolt carrier possibly.  It's on the cheaper side at $175.
I never did get my aluminum carrier from BRDC!  I finally did get my money back but that POS company has me gun shy now!

I have a all new build just waiting on a light carrier.
 Any info would be appreciated!

The Shooting Innovations aluminum BCG is $10 less, but the Whiskey just works great.

Anyone have a Shooting Innovations aluminum BCG ? Most interested in long term reviews.

But I still want a Red BCG like what I tried to order from BRDC. Would not order from them even if they listed for $50.

It would be nice if the ATF approves this.  It could open the door for other methods of permanently attaching muzzle devices.

This is what the ATF document I found says.

"Permanent methods of attachment include full-fusion gas or electric steel-seam welding, high-temperature (1100°F) silver soldering, or blind pinning with the pin head welded over. "

The way it's written is specific about steel welding, which kind of sucks.  If a manufacturer were to make a muzzle device out of high temperature composite and then bond it to the barrel it would be impossible to remove without destroying the device.  To me that's permanently attached.

I would prefer someone to build AR barrels using titanium barrel extensions!

They're building barrels using explosive welding, not attaching muzzle devices.  I'd wager that explosive welding is a sight more expensive than a pin and weld job.

This is almost the same concept as the Taccom ultra light 9mm barrel.  Taccom just pin welds it instead.  I don't really see how it can be called part of the barrel since it's not rifled but hey if it is acceptable by the ATF then it opens up more flexibility.

It's a letdown when you look at the new product expecting to see a fully rifled, lightweight barrel...and instead just get a useless, extra long muzzle device, albeit a lightened one.  We can always go with the aluminum 22LR barrels.  :/

I have my proposed 300blk pistol build down to a theoretical 3.786 lbs.
I'm having difficulty with the hand guard and the bolt carrier group.

The lightest short (7") handguard I can find is the 2a Armament BL rail. 5.56oz with TI barrel nut.
Any lighter known options out there?

Also looking at the bolt carrier group. Not really wanting to go aluminum, kinda want longer durability. What do you guys think about the Master of Arms NYX? The carrier is 3.98 without the weights and springs, plus a bolt at 2.2 gets to 6.18. Expensive as all heck too....

If I go with that bolt group and can find a handguard around 3oz? That gets me down to almost 3.5lbs. And around 2k for the build. Depends on how many vendors I have to pay shipping to.

What would you guys recommend for a stock/grip?

The build is going to be an Aero Upper, 80 lower, Integrity arms lightweight barrel(1lb 8oz), Brigand Arms Edge 15" handguard.

I'm looking for light, but not giving up comfortable. And there is a budget involved, so no $250 stocks.

I love the look of the Skeletonized grips but I doubt that'll happen. Thanks for any help.

BTW, I'll be buying both used in a couple weeks or so if someone has something they're looking to sell.

People here would buy a 10.5 " to cover mid length and 13.4" to cover rifle length.

Replace those 10/32 screws with titanium button head to cut that weight.

I only use 3 screws to secure my tube, they work fine.

Thanks for the input.  Those lengths make a lot of sense and that's probably what I'll go with.  I'll also do a 15" and a 7".

I'm running PWS tube, nut and plate. Yea I might remove the tungsten weight just to see if it will further decrease felt recoil. One thing I can say about venom defense brake is that it's highly effective. When comparing to a V7 micro brake, the difference is night and day.

The New set with out forward assist is 11.7oz to 12.7oz estimated stripped. So add dual bolt catches,  Ti mag release, trigger pins & Ti takedown pins that it comes with. The old set was 16.7oz so you have substract the 4 to 5oz for New Model. The 16.7 oz weight is from an email from Assend Armory before I ordered one so I don't know if that was stripped weight? The old set also comes with Steel Takedown pins, SS Steel Trigger Pins & skeletonized steel Magazine Release . I don't think the New Models dual bolt catches are chamged Ti but they did change to skeletonized steel on old model.

I'm glad there are more LW options on the market. Off the shelf it's the lightest option currently produced. Not sure the material/design allows for the kind of DIY lightening that the Hogue grip does, but not everyone wants to do that anyway. Added all 4 of their grips to the PWD.
