finally had a chance to take out the .22 i built a few weeks ago. luckily it was a day the boys were with me on one of my days off. we all got to go. noticed an issue with a few test fires at my house. found out about the notched hammer thing and swapped them. rifle ran great after the swap. went through a whole brick of cci blazers today. two light primer strikes and one stove pipe. all things considered , i'd call that a success.

Why?

Just cleaning up the main forum page.

All formerly tacked threads can now be access via links from the new "Important" threads announcement.

Toggling the archive status prevents them from going to the archive server if no one posts in them for awhile.

Cool - thanks!

Here's mine I built last summer sitting next to my late model 604 clone:

So can you guess which one is which?  I went with a CMMG conversion kit in a surplus 604 upper.  I also used the Nodak Spud A1 lower since it has the correct geometry for the time period.  Once you have RBRD, little things like an A2 lower on a retro rifle just really stands out as being incorrect.  The big draw for me to go the retro route is that for a conversion, the 1:12" twist barrel works a little better with the .22LR than does the tighter 1:7 or 1:9 twist rates of the more modern rifles.  So let's see if this next picture helps in figuring out which one is which:

Now that we have the magazines in, it might be a little easier to spot the difference between the 5.56mm version and the .22LR rifle.  I always refer to my .22 conversion as a quasi-dedicated conversion in that some parts have been left out such as the buffer, buffer spring, buffer detent spring and buffer detent.  Reason is that there was no reason to add the expense of these parts that wouldn't be used in a .22 conversion anyways.  However, if I want to go back to shooting 5.56mm in this rifle, those parts could be installed in a matter of minutes.  Another problem I addressed with a .22 conversion is the problem of gas tube fouling or blowing that gas back into the receiver.  Rather than have that problem, I cut down an old gas tube so now the gas won't blow back into the upper receiver.  It also serves to keep the front handguard flange from rotating when the handguards are twisted.  Now there would still be the problem of the gas blowing back on top of the barrel under the handguards.  The simple solution to this was to install the gas tube stub upside down.  Now no gas escaped out the gas tube at all and everything is going down the barrel.  I can';t help but wonder if this has much of an effect on the muzzle velocity?  Weather it would or not, it does keep the gas in the barrel rather than outside of it!  Here's what we're looking at when the handguards are taken off:

So the magazine might be a give-away as to which one is which but at a distance, you may or may not immediately recognize it.  So let's open up the ejection port and look at the bolts:

Now it's pretty obvious that the black smooth bolt carrier is on the 604 and the shiney bolt is on the .22 conversion.  While the conversion kits aren't going to be the most accurate rifle when compared to a truely dedicated .22 rifle with the correct 1:16" twist rates, I'm still happy with the plinking accuracy it has.  I am also more pleased that it's a pretty decent copy of the 5.56mm originals and depending on the configuration they're in like the rack-safe picture on top, can be hard to tell from the 5.56mm version.

Latest incarnation of my .22 AR.  Just a Spike's dedicated barrel with a CMMG kit.
I used to have this on a Cav-Arms lower with a mid-length FF handguard.  So far I really like this better because it's really compact and light weight.

Pretty simple M&P 15-22. It's gone through a lot of changes but I think I like it set up like this best. BSA red dot may change to a PA 30mm with canted riser to match big brother.

Here's my .22lr

I wanted something different..Something that doesnt scream..
Look another M4 but in .22

So I looked in my forgotten parts box and came up with these.

Its a C7 upper with a CMMG .22lr barrel cut and pinned with the extended FH..
Standered LPK but with JP yellow springs.

The lower started as a 80% now completed to 100%.

It was engraved and Modified by Braceman.....

Ok so a quick range report on my Umbrella/Tactical Solutions build.  First off, it is now 500ish rounds in, and has run *PERFECTLY* through every single round.  I am incredibly impressed with it.  Out of the box I polished the rails and then gave the bolt a spray of dry lube and have not lubed it since.

Conditions were fantastic for this time of year in Alaska.  55f ish with a 1-2 mile headwind, sunny without a could in the sky.  Hell, the snow is already almost melted (usually takes another week or two)

Rifle and scope combo shot great, although my groups suffered from bad posture at the bench.  (The bench was too high, so awkward positioning gave me a hand cramp from hell)  As such, I was pulling rounds off target to the left about an inch.  That said, for rapid fire with a 3-9 scope, I'd say the accuracy was great.

Top groupings were getting a rough zero with the scope (to allow for correction once the wind stops) and the bottom center group was for accuracy.  For my first serious trigger time in over 2 years, I'd say I didn't do too bad.  All rounds were fired at 50 yards with the scope on 5x.

Oh and range cleanup days are wednesdays, so thats why it looks a bit cruddy.  That and its a no RO BLM range.
