Here we go again...

Just picked up my third XCR

Attached File

Will SBR this one and throw a 11" barrel on it, and then that will also let me finally give this 7.5" 300 blackout upper I picked up a few weeks ago a try.

Killer lineup.

I'm waiting on the next batch of MLOK uppers to be ready, then #4 will be on the way.

My vintage XCR and M96.  I wouldn't mind picking up another XCR but $2200 is a little hard to swallow.

Not that I'm aware. Just another batch of the current type off to Cerakoting.

If I could get a closeout rifle that isn’t keymod I’d consider it-$1600 is about where I think their normal rifles should street out at. Now, whether they can make any money on them priced like that may be another matter.

I never said it was the most expensive rifle on the planet-I wouldn’t buy any of those either-especially if they are AR based.

I’m in the machine trades and while I don’t know what the realities are for a business like Robinson’s, the cost to fixture and machine an XCR is fairly low. Maybe if they sold better they could make it up on volume, I don’t know. I just know that they are fantastic rifles and I’d like to have another but the prices have risen in excess of my wages over the time they have been on the market at a time the country is absolutely drowning in high quality weapons that cost a lot less.

An XCR is priced at least 50% higher than it was when it came out. Are you making 50% more a year?

I asked if I could have the dickmod upper swapped to MLOK so I wouldn't have to buy new hardware. CS said no problem, I'd just have to wait until the next batch was sprayed. I don't find their normal pricing repugnant, especially considering what one gets for it, but anything saved is more money for ammo and accessories.

That’s cool-the MLOC option is a $200 premium in the link you posted. For me, it’s still not a deal because I already have a 16” XCR…. I’d have to buy an $1800 gun and then put a $500 barrel on it to get the 10” I really want. Or, at least I think they are $500… caliber conversions are something I haven’t looked at in at least 15 years.

I haven't been interested in the caliber conversations as of late but while browsing their website I noticed a 6.8 SPC in a 7.5 inch barrel. I think I'm going to give it a try.

I just put an order in for a F5 MFG gen 3 MSS stock and Robinson 1913 stock adapter. We’ll see if they work together sufficiently well to fix the biggest complaint I have on the XCR, the stock.

Certainly possible. We'll see. They do offer a XCR model on the previous gen (maybe still gen 1 which is garbage) so I'm hopeful. If it doesn't work, I'll put it on my Kuna.

ETA: Regarding the FAST butt pad, I agree. There's a post on Reddit where a guy used a Magpul PRS buttpad that I've considered doing as well. He had to drill and tap another hole for the top screw though.

I agree w/ the narrowness of it. I also don't like how my cheek piece moves. I can't seem to figure out how to keep it from moving back and forth and, occasionally, up and down in the slots. Maybe I'm doing something wrong w/ it. I wouldn't be opposed to a wide cheek piece either.

I'd fire off an email to Robinson. Push comes to shove, I'm sure you could lightly heat the cheek piece and pinch to give it more clamping force.

After the Gen. 1, I'm pretty leery.

Just ordered a PRS buttpad. Looks like all I'll have to do is drill a new hole in the pad. Thanks for the idea.

I get it. The Gen 1 on the Jakl I had wasn't as bad as everyone made it out to be but it still wasn't great. The Gen 2s have a better rep. We'll see how the Gen 3 is. I'll definitely post my thoughts when I get it along w/ pics of it mounted on my -M if I'm able w/ the RA 1913 adapter.

Also, the Magpul PRS buttpad will NOT work on the FAST 3 stock. Too short no matter where ya want to drill and not enough material on the backside to hold a screw.

Take a look on Robinson's site for a visual, but the FAST 2 has the rearward-sloping cheek piece, whereas the 3 is flat across.

I have a chunk of 70A rubber around here, but I'll be damned if I can find it. The stock "pad" is my only complaint with the rifle. Shooting prone with it is not ideal.

And my next XCR-L is on the way.

Finally handled one of these in person a few weeks back when a local shop had a used one on consignment.  Only downsides were that it was priced close to new, was keymod and had an 18" barrel.

But that was the last encouragement I needed to order a new one for myself.

Have a 12" barreled "pistol" in 5.56 on order that I'll SBR once it arrives.  Still trying to decide on a stock though.  Probably going to be a choice between the FAST2 and the F5 ACR.

Man Just wait till you see how it shoots!

FWIW I like the fast2 and fast3, only real complaint being that its fairly slim, but that's also a positive that it folds up to be not all that wide.

Congrats on ordering one, every time I let someone try it out I can see them going through their budget in their head.

Fantastic!

My 12" with a brace and a TBAC Ultra 9 won't register on the three shot timers we've tried. Hearing safe.

Just got a 16" 5.56 inventory blow-out in and the FAST 1 stock is awesome. I feel the need to change... nothing. I've dicked with ACR stocks. While nice, I'd just get the FAST 2 and spend the difference on ammo. Not a huge deal.

Also: the Magpul PRS pad will fit on the FAST 1/2 with no more than redrilling one of the screw holes. The FAST 3 is an inch taller and all bets are off.

They're out there. I see them on gunjoker from time-to-time. Alternatively, get a new one with a Pic rail stock adapter and go that route.

Be advised: the tubular stock is fine for low iron sights. It's a chin weld with an optic, though.

@The_Beer_Slayer

Worth it? Depends. Some parts for the earlier patterns are no longer in production- particularly firing pins* and recoil buffers. The Type 3 gas block has a wider adjustment range and doesn't require that one loosen the retaining nut to adjust. Gas blocks can be swapped on to older barrels, but one would also need the current Type 3 op rod. Upgrading to the current pattern means full access to all the spare parts and conversion kits.

Owning one early pattern -L, two current -Ls and an -M, I'd say the Type 3 parts are a decided improvement, both in terms of reliability and serviceability. I my brother upgrades his early -L, I'll buy the old parts from him. If not, I'll have my early -L sent in.

Robinson will mill the lower so it can accommodate the ass end of the current Type 3 bolt carrier/buffer at no charge. You can just order the other parts and swap them out at home.

If anything, upgrade the older-style trigger assembly with the current model. I think the current one is the equal of any good AR trigger.

I think it's around $500 to upgrade if one recycles the current barrel. New bolt, carrier, op rod, gas block.

*firingpins.com still shows Type 0/1 firing pins in stock. I've successfully ordered from them, but my brother placed an order shortly after that never shipped and there was no contact from them. Don't know if it was a glitch or they're out of business.

I’ll second the trigger as a worthwhile upgrade. I rented an XCR in Idaho after they came out with the upgrade and it was surprisingly good. The original trigger is decent by USGI AR standards, but not the same zip-code as the upgrade.

Yep. The original is on-par with a decent mil-spec AR trigger. Not remarkable either way. I'm sure the contact points could be stoned if one had the tools and time. I might try that with the one sitting in the parts box.

Thanks to a delay in getting the paint done and then UPS being UPS, I *FINALLY* received my stock today.

Initial thoughts: very, very pleased w/ it. Absolutely solid stock. No flex WHATSOEVER. I do wish they'd offer this with a XCR specific mounting option just to shave some of the length when mounted off, but it's not bad.  I'm 5'9" and with the stock fully collapsed, it's almost perfect for my preferred LOP. It also folds left with plenty of room between the buttpad and the charging handle on my XCR-M. Finally, it feels sooooo much better than the FAST stock I have (now for sale if anyone wants it). Without having shot it (hopefully next weekend), I would highly recommend this stock. It's not the bendy F5 stock of old.

Here it is mounted on my 14.5" P&W 6.5CM XCR-M on the Robinson Arms 1913 stock adapter:

It's been around long enough now I guess and replacement parts are reasonable.  I really hope I love this thing.

Both mine and my brother's -Ms have been phenomenal (same goes for the -Ls). Add accessories, add ammo, start blastin'. You'll love yours, especially with all the goodies you plan to put on.

I'm gonna go run around in the bush with my 6.5 in a bit.

I ordered myself a new L last week. Gradfathered AWB coming to a house near me in July, so i figured I better get one in the safe again while I could.

This will be my fourth XCR, I went mid length this time as it’s the only hand guard length I haven’t tried.

Thanks for the pep talk, I'm excited to give it a whirl.  Regarding the plastic butt, has anyone tried plasti-dipping it or even the miracle product known as flex seal? I mean. It holds my house together!

Took a touch of cutting away the rubber but works well

I don't know why I didn't think of Flex Seal. I don't see why that wouldn't work over the hard plastic "pad" on the FAST 3.
