Thanks for the reply BTW the Z Maxers look good in that pic.
Did you crimp the necks?
Is so what kind of crimp did you use?

Went and did some shooting today and went back to the 500 yard range.

I like to use milk jugs with colored water for reactive targets. Before i started reloading it would take 3 or 4 shots to hit one at 500, but now i can pretty much call where i am going to hit it at

Anyways, i thought i would share these pictures.

I was shooting the Z-Max and some new Hornady Spire SP loads i just worked up at 500 yards, and noticed that the Z-max where showing great ballistics penetration at 500 yards compared to the SP. I feel like the Z-Max would do very well at this distance against small critters.

Z-Max entry hole

Exit

SP Entry

Exit
Sorry for the crappy cell pic, i usually have my camera with me, but the exit hole is the same size at the entry hole.

I shot a total of 12 jugs, 6 of each, and the results where the same.

anyone else had a chance to load up some z-max's?

Im starting to get worried that my 25.3gr load of h335 is to hot.

Everything that i have read says that around 23.8gr is max load for that bullet

i dident see any signs of overpressure, but it did feel a little on the warm side, and had an average of 3000 fps which is pretty fast out of a 16" barrel from what i have read.

just looking for others info before i crank out 500 or 1k of these

I've had similar results with the 60gr V-max with that load (which is my standard load for 55gr FMJ M193 clone).  In the 3000 FPS range, and starting to show a little pressure for me, with the ejector imprinting on the case rim.  I have a few mags loaded for them for zombies, or coyotes.  Which ever needs them the most.

A small fox met its maker this winter from one of them out of my Savage 10FP.

I load the 55 Z and V and the 60 gr V-Max. All three are superb with from 23 to 24.5 of 4895, love these little max's.

ETA - Yes, I know the 55 grainers are the same.

Looks like my winning load is 25.3g of H335 COL of 2.250

This is my load of the Hornady 55g FMJBT with 25g H335

And a work up of M856 Tracers

One shot each including a factory round shot

I went back to the 600 yard range to test the rest, 7 more of each load. I noticed that compared to factory rounds, my hand loads where much brighter burring but i think it was because they where also much slower. I had my loads shooting at 400 yards hitting milk jugs and fired a factory round that hit the top of the 15ft berm at 600 yards. So my rounds are not near as hot, but are more visible so i think ill keep them light.

When i got to the range and set up, there was a guy with his chronograph out testing some of his 30.06 loads and was nice enough to let me run my rounds.

I tested:

Z-Max 25g H335 COL 2.250   2981, 2946, 2954   Avg. 2960

Z-Max 25.3g H335 COL 2.250   2997, 2996, 3006   Avg. 3000

My 55g FMJBT 25g H335 COL 2.200    2854, 2916, 2932  Avg. 2900

American Eagle black box .223 FMJ 2832, 2772, 2754     Avg. 2786

Edt: forgot to add that i had a 8-15 mph cross wind with gust to 20 which might explain why the groups are not that great overall

I see the website for those targets you printed and tried going to to it. My computer here at home blocked that page saying there was a "malware" on that page and cautioned me from opening it.

edit: there's 2 ways to skin a cat................ I went in another way from the home page and it took me right to it with no warning.

I'm using Firefox and it comes up as an attack page either way I go to it.

yes if you go to the address on the paper it will flag it as bad.

Just go to LaRue's site, go to targets and its there.

Anyone try AA2300 powder yet? I have a bunch of it. The price of these projectiles per 500 is pretty enticing. Loaded into nickled cases would look pretty nice also.
