Since Velociraptor was roughly the size of a large turkey, I'm going with something in 12 gauge.

I dunno....

If I was headed at a velociraptor, I think I would want those 12G fin-stabilized “mini grenades” with an RDX filling:

http://www.defensereview.com/auto-assault-12-shotgunfrag-12-high-explosive-round-comboweapon-system/

http://www.defensereview.com/1_31_2004/FRAG%2012.pdf

Maybe it’s octanol, or PBX, but even with the real, “turkey-sized” Velociraptor or Jurassic Park version, boom is more than inert slug.

High explosives FTW!

425 grains out of a 308?

Kinetic energy is about the same, but which one would you rather shoot something big and toothy with?

If you watch in slo mo, there's a flash of light inside the gel block following by smoking out of the entrance hole.

I'm pretty sure that's caused by a collapsing cavitation bubble which produces light and heat. First time I've seen that happen in a gel block.

It's actually dieseling. A small amount of the flammable gel is vaporized by the hit and ignites as pressure increases inside the collapsing temporary cavity.

I shot a 250 to 275 pound boar 4 times with the 325 grain FTX load and got no exits. 1st shot broadside at 35 yards, next 2 40 to 50 yards straight through the nuts running away, 4th shot broadside at 55. I was fairly underwhelmed to be honest. Still love the gun. Wish I had it setup for a suppressor.

I hope you know the gummy tip hornady bullets are nothing new.  They have great Range but they do a lot of damage to meat and don’t have the same bone breaking capacity of a hard cast load.

When I hunt (sbl) I have 405 hard cast in the gun and 325 gummies in the ammo holder on the stock. I hunt with factory ghost ring sight. So if I need to shoot past 200 I put a gummy round in. I can hit 5/5 at 400 with the gummies ona 16” target. . My 405 loads have twice the drop a tryst range.

Broadside, through both shoulders, 130lb buck dressed out, 20 yards.

I should have taken a picture of the exit wound.

My Guide Gun was a lemon, feeding issues.  I traded it off.  That was the second Marlin lever gun I had that was a shit show.

Bummer, but still that is 87X better than every worthless tag that I have ever drawn.   Sounds like I need to put a whole lot of range-time in on the 1895 GG, just in case of a good tag

I've shot a bunch of deer in OH with the 325 FTX coming out of a 26" barrel on an Encore Pro Hunter. That bullet expends ALL it's energy IN the deer. It knocks the $#!+ out of a deer and more often than not, it just knocks them down where they stood. The doe I shot Tuesday was knocked off her feet and died where she stood. I've yet to have  one shoot through a deer. That bullet does not retain it's weight very well and seems to come apart every time. I always find little pieces of lead and copper in odd places as I butcher the deer carcasses.

I recall a few years ago trying a half dozen rounds of that ammo in an 15" Encore pistol. With the walnut and rubber grip, it was....lively.
